Re: Drafting, Trading & Rookie Thread

It's still early days but the way it's looking to me is like this:

Rookies:
Webb - promote/trade
Curnow - retain (3rd year)
Pfeiffer - retain
D.Butcher - retain
Irons - delist
Jonas - delist

Senior List:
Players to delist/trade
Banner - 4 years on the list now, not major improvement
Bre.Ebert - not a small forward and doesn't have the tank for a midfield role
Phillips - not AFL standard
Rodan - only plays one way and is limited
Salopek - looks like the game has passed him by :(
Thomas - not AFL standard
Salter (rookie list if need be) - not AFL standard

Webb is too valuable as a tall forward to outright delist, he may have some trade value to get us an extra draft pick, should at least spend a year on our senior list if he isn't traded. Pfeiffer to be retained on the rookie list for depth. Happy to keep Logan for an extra year at least.

Delisting Banner without giving him another extended run to once again prove himself capable for the third year in a row would be insane.

The fact that he isn't playing week in week out is insane.

Delisting him at all after what he's shown would be insane.

I swear half the people on this board are the Beer Baron.

Re: Drafting, Trading & Rookie Thread

You people need to watch Moneyball.

Is Banner slow? Yep. Does he do anything flashy that really makes you think 'gee, this guy's a player'? Nope.

Does any of that matter when he's getting nearly 20 touches and 1.6 goals a game (when not the sub) despite playing for a shit side like he was last year? **** no.

To put that in perspective, that's more of the ball and the same amount of goals than what either of Matthew Pavlich or Jonathan Brown has gotten this year. More disposals and goals than Ryan O'Keefe, Jeff Garlett, 'the next Rioli' Jared Petrenko, Jimmy Bartel, Jarryd Blair, Alex Fasolo and Shaun Higgins (although I think he was sub for a game). It's also 3 disposals less but 0.6 goals a game more than Steve Johnson.

Would you delist any of those guys? Half of them would be considered our best player and captain.

Re: Drafting, Trading & Rookie Thread

I don't think Banner is great but I'd rather have him being a quasi forward/midfielder than Ebo1.

Re: Drafting, Trading & Rookie Thread

Still early days, Banner wouldn't be the first player I'd delist anyway and my opinion will change as the year progresses.

Last year I suggested early in the year that we delist Davenport and that wasn't taken as well initially either.

I'd take it further and currently I woudl pick Mitch in front of Ebo1, Sal, Hitchy, Phillips, Rodan, Thomas, Logan, Kane to name a few :)

This, although for the record while I loved the concept of Moneyball the movie was underwhelming *awaits lifetime ban from bigfooty for saying so*

I do find it strange that he has to struggle so much harder for opportunities than it seems others do. For whatever deficiencies he is reported to have, surely they are no more than those of the rest of our squad... lol at the thought that "defensive effort and tackling" is a prerequisite for getting into our first 18.

My reading of the SNAFL report this week, is that Banner is either not going to play this week due to ongoing knee problems or could face some type of treatment - possibly being out for a long period.

I'm not sure that he can be considered for any elevation in the short term.

Danger Zone

A big Draft year coming ahead and I fear Nick Salter may miss the chop, Expecting 5 players to be released at the end of the season who do we all think may be in danger of beong delisted and need big second half of the season to make sure they are around for our next tilt at a flag?

Nick Salter
David Rodan
Simon Phillips
Brett Ebert
Steven Salopek
Tom Logan
*Mitchell Banner

* I hope Mitch does not get chopped but he seems to be stagnating.

Re: Danger Zone

Yeah Salter has another year,

No one knows if it has any form of injury/games played condition though. Possibly would.

Agree with:

Rodan, Phillips, Hitchcock, Salopek, Logan, Thomas, Banner

Is it just a coincidence the Thomas plays and we have won this year? His hardness and work for others is invaluable, he blocks and sheppards for his team mates and his attack on the contest and body without a doubt makes the opposition look over there shoulder.

Agreed. Matty was part of two goals on the w/e from memory. The handball out to shooter in the first quarter and the give to Pearcy in the third. People need to appreciate when he goes in head first for the contested footy. Fearless.

We would have to be the only team who plays a player just for intimidation factor.

Atleast Mitch Robinson can play.

Thomas can't.

Yes, it's a coincidence.

He was also in the side for a crudload of losses over the past few seasons.

While he's been in the side for 2 wins, one was an 8 goal win against the Gold Coast where he was barely a factor and for the other win, yes, he was important in the last quarter, but he was basically useless for the first 3, much like Pfeiffer.

Teams with players with Thomas's limitations don't win flags. We'd be better served by giving Andrew Moore a run.

That said, i'd drop Pfeiffer before him this week.

Re: Danger Zone

Yes.

The three worst teams we've played are St. Kilda, North and Gold Coast, and we beat all three. Against better teams (I still rate Freo at Subi above the three we've beaten, but Freo interstate would be below them) we've lost. We certainly didn't win those games because of Matt Thomas and his 14 touches a game.

It would be just as easy to ask 'is it just a coincidence that we broke a 9 game losing streak last year when Thomas missed the AO game after playing in 8 of those 9 losses'? Correlation rarely equals causation.

I agree with your list. I think six of those seven will get the chop. (plus Kane to the vet list) 'The SANFL report - the first nine weeks' makes interesting reading. I get the impression that Jonas has more future at the club than Mitch?

Sorry I meant in general not this week
