He's small, but he's excellent. Sometimes ya just gotta look past size... Ballantyne, Dion Prestia, Luke Dahlhaus... sif you wouldn't want them in your team.

Not for pick 7.

That's one example. If Kennedy ends up as good as Harvey, then yes, pick 7 on him would be worth it. Far more likely that he'll end up like one of the other 3 though.

I'm sick of us taking risks and trying to be different with first round picks. It doesn't work. No more Ben Jacobs' over Shaun Atley's. For once can we just pick the guy who everyone else thinks is the best player available?

A lot of people think Kennedy is worth Pick 7, literally the only thing that drops him is his size. As reported on the previous page - in some South Australian circles he's rated above Toumpas. I was told about Ben Kennedy before I was told of Jimmy Toumpas, that was before the 2011 season.

I'd just hate for this board to have a meltdown if for whatever reason, we did choose Kennedy. It wouldn't be a bad, or unexpected pick at all. The kid is immensely talented.

If we get a pp and have 7 and 8 would you take a risk on kennedy i would, think we should stay local with first pick again even though we keep our interstaters toumpas and grundy will be gone think that would make kennedy and mayers our best options. I like both these kids and would be happy with either but would love both.

I dunno, I just feel like picking someone as small as Ben Kennedy would be like marrying an 18 year old girlfriend. It might turn out to be the best decision you ever made, but no matter how great you think she is, the percentages say that it won't work out as you hoped.

I won't write him off if we get him by any means, but I won't be overly confident either.

I'd be a lot happier getting Kennedy under these circumstances. We need at least one can't-miss prospect from the first round IMO. We can't afford the risk of our first rounder being a bust.

No-one under 180cm with a top ten pick, ever.

Judging players on their size and around a 5 minute highlight clip

Sometimes you play the percentages, Jonts.

Go back and pick out every player drafted top 10 at under 180cm for the past ten draft years. Tell me which one was worth the pick, and lets look at all the ones that weren't.

I'm bored enough

come back in 10 minutes

I did a quick look through, and there aren't many selected in the top 10, although there are a few listed at exactly 180cm (such as Marc Murphy, Chris Yarran) and you've got Chris Masten, Dion Prestia and Liam Sumner (from last year, hasn't been given much of a go yet).

Looking at the drafts they came from, so far, I'd put them in or near the 10 of each draft on performance (apart from Sumner). Cyril Rioli is 177cm, you saying he wouldn't go top 10 of his draft now? Height is just one factor, ability is far more important.

2011: Sumner (Pick 10) has played one game, too early too call
2010: Prestia (Pick 10) Signs pointing to wort it, too early to call
2009: None
2008: None
2007: None
2006: None
2005: None
2004: None
2003:None

Note that there is a handful of players at 180cm, who range from guns like Murphy to duds like Tambling

The fact that Barely any have been taken in the top 10 supports your theory to a certain extent. But the fact is, Kennedy whilst being a bit of a reach at pick 7 won't be the end of the world if picked up. I still can see him being a very good footballer and worthy of a top ten pick.

I'm saying that the risks associated with drafting players with a size deficiency is enough that you don't pick them at a `should be a sure thing' draft position. Every recruiter in the league believes this, even Port.

Harder to measure (well, more time consuming) are the under 180cm players that draft afficionados froth over in the months before the draft, only to be `astounded' when they go in the second round.

All of the "sure things" that will be around pick 7 though aren't the players we needso do you do a bit of a reach to a SA lad who fits what we need?

Disclaimer (this may change with SANFL finals and draft combine)

If you want to look for a jinx, IMO don't worry about seeking to draft SA lads, you worry about Vic Metro lads. Even there we've been fairly lucky, but we also haven't had any superstar Metro boys, well, ever - closest is Nick Stevens.

And sometimes a draft year shits on your needs - its why some of us froth at the mouth about needs in years when such players are available.

I reckon we should concentrate on getting the trading / FA situation correct first of all, let's worry about who to draft after that.

The guys we pick up in trades & FA, plus those we lose, should have some influence on our drafts, although at our 1st pick I'm more inclined to go best available.

We have to be realistic that several of our players who we may let go would not have great values on the trade table, nor can we bundle up some of them to get something very good, it just does not happen in the 21st century.

You guys are discussing players below 180 - Kennedy is way below that at 174 - no chance for our first pick IMO, but yes to a second PP or compo pick if we get one for departing players.

That 174cm was taken at start of Bays pre season October last year

Interested to see what it is at Draft combine, presume he has grown at least to 176cm

Huge fan of him but he is more suited to the crows pick

Should we look into any of the Americans from the AFL USA Draft Combine?

I dunno if he has one white parent, so it'll have to be us.
