list changes for 2019

So if I am counting right. We currently have 35 senior and 4 rookies. With Signorello, Otten, Cheney (Hunter,CEY as rookies) still unsigned. Otten I see as getting another one year deal to help our Wright in the SANFL as his VC. Signorello and Cheney delisted free agents. Gov traded. Hunter and CEY may be re picked in the rookie draft if no else selects them. So that gives us 32 Senior Listed and 2 Rookies (Murphy,Wilson). Assuming we go 38+6 again thats six selections in national draft and 4 rookie picks one probably being CEY. Maybe too much so CHeney and Sig may also get one year deals giving us 4 selections.

If we want CEY as a rookie, we will just keep him.

Last year we had to deist him, as they wanted to move him from the senior list to the rookie list. There is no such issue this year.

He's out of contract, so they can let him explore his options, and then re-sign him if he doesn't get any nibbles (assuming they still want him on the list).

If he gets delisted then he won't be on the list in 2019.

Wonder if Craig Kelly is still pissed off about the Pies not taking Jake as a father/son because I saw his brother Will play on the weekend and he's going to be a serious player when he fills out, tall, mobile, great overhead, quick for a tall lad and a really good kick, played well down back in the first half then dominated when shifted forward in the second half. Looks one of the better KPP's in this draft. Won't be at all surprised if we put in a bid on him to keep the Pies honest.

CEY was a Rookie listed player this year .... he’ll be a rookie again next year

That data is handled centrally by the League website and propagated to the club ones, could have paperwork in, but could also be a bug

My feeling is that we would prefer to take 21 to the draft than give another year to Cheney. But if we can trade up and turn 4 picks into 3, we will keep Cheney. We will find out soon enough as we have to finalise our list before the DFA period.

We have to finalise it by Wednesday - that's when his contract expires, and it's the last List Lodgement date before the drafts.

AFL website saying Hunter is likely to get another year. Think we've got enough mid-aged deadwood on our list already. We really need to start developing youth particularly with guys like Jacobs on the decline.

Edit: I should rephrase what I said. I think we're great at developing players but we should have cut the list deeper and replaced guys like Hunter, Wilson and Cheney/Otten with younger, developing players. We've gone a bit too far in favour of depth IMO.

Very weird, I was sure they were not on there over the weekend.

Well we have no idea on Cheney but the "trade up and retain him or stick with existing picks and he is retained" theory sounds about right.

Like I said, all of that data is handled centrally by the AFL and propagated out to the club sites, nobody in the AFC media team has any ability to change any of it. If they weren't there on the weekend, then it was just a hiccup on the AFL server.

Hes had his 3 years so he has to be placed on the main list or delisted and re-rookied in the draft

Other clubs whip players off their website very quickly .....Crows have tended to act much slower, which IMO is a bit more sensitive to the player just delisted ...although I doubt that's the real reason?

The decision to go with "Live Trading" has massively increased the level of uncertainty for players on the fringes. AFL Contracts expire on 31st October (tomorrow), and there are still a ridiculous number of players who haven't been re-signed and haven't been told that they're going to be cut.

It's completely understandable that the clubs won't want to finalise list numbers until they have a reasonable degree of certainty about what draft picks they will be able to use in the National Draft. For example, Adelaide currently has picks #8, #13, #16, #21, #73 and #83. If they cut Cheney, but then do a 2-for-1 pick trade, then they end up being forced to make a selection at #73 - not exactly plan A. On the other hand, if they keep him and a deal doesn't eventuate then they either lose pick #21 or go to a 39/5 list structure, which has TPP implications.

The end result of this is that many clubs have about 30 hours in which to make the final decision... in the meantime, there are a lot of AFL players whose lives are stuck in limbo.

Good point, Vader. As usual the AFL hasn’t thought this through properly and has introduced live draft trading (which I support) without mitigating the consequences.

Yes, providing no other club drafts him or signs him as a DFA.
Cheney would then be on an automatic two-year deal if taken in the National Draft.

Which would make that scenario unlikely, and Adelaide taking him in the rookie draft instead.
