He was woeful early when we should have put them to the sword , poor forward defensive pressure .Petterd actually played ok
We found out yesterday which players could not cope with finals pressure. These players need to be replaced. Not delisted per se, but replaced by better options in our starting 22. True it's hard to base these decisions on one finals game (need to allow for having a bad game).
- Vickery is fast becomig a squib. Is he a 2nd ruckman or a key forward or something else? He doesn't like centre bounces and he doesn't like marking unless it's on the lead. Not good enough for a 200cm guy. I would thrown his name around at trade time and there would be some interest. I actually think Griffiths is a simple replacement for us. Same size, better forward, worse ruckman (but tall enough to play there). I don't know about the Stevenson retirement story is true but I would keep him on as backup.
- Riewoldt had a poor game yesterday. We have tried to turn an instinctive key forward into a 'team game' automaton, to our detriment. By all means use that style of play as a plan B to bring our other key forwards into the game. But we have a dual coleman-medalist playing as decoy tall trying to dish it off to on-ballers dashing past. He should have tried to put his mark on the game and kick 6. That's what the gun forwards do in finals!
- My favourite player Jacko, who had a good year (I even bought myself a DJ badge half way through the year), had a poor final. Dopey free kick on the boundary line and could not shut down Judd. Now that's no easy feat to shut down Judd, but we can't just continue to persist with a tagger who cannot shut down the best onballers. May was well just play our three best onballers at the centre bounces all day if you can't have one of them doing the job tagging. I would like to see Morris given a try. He is a maniac like DK, and DK was a great tagger in the second half of his career. As for DJ, I prefer him on the HFF and kept well away from centre bounces.
- Shane Edwards had a poor game. I like him and think he has improved a lot in the past few years. Did he wilt due to the pressure? Or was he still carrying a niggle? I expected a better game from him yesterday.
- Grigg has a lot of people up in arms this morning. I think mainly because he plays the role of the soft outside reciever. It's easy to not like players who play that role, but the reality is most teams put someone on the outside of the packs to take easy posession. So I don't think we can just pay out on him for being 'soft'. I haven't made up my mind about him.
- Petterd's selection was mystifying when we elected to drop Foley. Surely in finals footy you want as many skilled onballers as you can to rotate through the middle. Petterd has exceeded expectations this year, simply because most expected him to not even get a game. He did FA yesterday and I think his position on the ground could easily have been covered.
It's been a good year but a disappointing way to bow out. Still, I take that 1000 times more than finishing 9th again. I still feel we were robbed by that ******* cheat umpire in Perth. We should rightfully have beaten Freo, that would have seen us finish 4th and have played Hawthorn (which we would have been a chance against), and get the double chance.
Petterd actually played ok
Totally agreed, I didn't like his effort on the wing late but, seeing the replay his effort over 4 quarters was quite valuable.
Worst players was clearly S Edwards who hardly saw it and Rance was murdered by Waite!!
Rance had impact at least I thought. Didn't win his battle in the end but still had positive moments in his first final.

SHOULD have won in Perth but would never have finished fourth.
Simply, if we were a chance, Freo wouldn't have bought their reserve grade team to Melbourne for the season ender against the Saints!
I'm still bemused by this comment. Do you actually think the sanfl is weaker than the vfl or the wafl? It's very strong..
Yes.I'm still bemused by this comment. Do you actually think the sanfl is weaker than the vfl or the wafl? It's very strong..
Probably the strongest and easily.
Lonergan and Petterd must go come seasons end.
Howe for a smokey .
Would love Howe, the absolute missing link in our fwd line.
It would be nice if we nailed our first pick again....but could we for once nail our 2nd and 3rd rounders?????????????????
06 - Edwards (28)
08 - Post (26)
09 - Griffiths (19), Astbury (35), Dea (44),
10 - Batch (30), Helbig (47)
11 - Elton (26)
12 - McIntosh (31), McBean (33)
When was the last time we picked up a genuine star outside of the first round. Other clubs seem to do it all the time...Lions (Redden/Rockliff), Freo (Fyfe) ect!
Bar Grimes we haven't unearthed a gem past the first round since Mark Coughlan. Your development speeds up considerably when you get a couple of guns out of a draft.
MCBEAAAAAN
Well I didn't want to say it because I remember when people called Post/Astbury 200 gamers early on.
I agree although on this occasion I wasn't suggesting the jeremey variety .Would love Howe, the absolute missing link in our fwd line.

We need to make some seriously hard decisions next year, i think we need to phase out, kingy, S.Edwards for a start, they just leave to much of a hole in the spot they play especially against the stronger sides!!
