Recruiting List Development 2017 - How do we develop our list?

If we're honest with ourselves and the state of the list, we fall short in every single aspect of the game.

Nah, our ball movement when on is nearly as good as any in the competition. What we have is a leadership and list balance problem. We win the last two games and we are top 6. The cliff isn't that steep and the evenness of the ladder highlights that.

I'm talking about Watson and co.

Heppell is the only one we can count as a legitimate inside mid, the rest are hopeful (even though Langford isn't that slow)

It's by far our biggest weakness, and not a position that needs to have a pacy midfielder.

Would prefer our next inside mid to have a real point of difference.

after watching luey today i think sam hayes has to be in consideration for the draft

Would the club bring in a second ruckmen of similar young age to Draper?

I know we need to build our list but surely we could better utilise a top pick for a more pressing need? Especially seeing as though there is a bunch of kids who fit our needs profile?

Im not as sold on Hopper as many on here are.

From what the thread on him (via the D&T board thread) suggests, agility and pace are two things he lacks.

Do we need another slow, one paced inside midfielder?
Slow maybe, and average for agility. But he is quick of mind. A bull at stoppages that dominates the contested side of the game. He also has the added bonus of being able to rotate forward to great effect.

You would be backing him in to become a better inside midfielder than Dyson Heppell with the added bonus of allowing Hep to play HB (more).

As far as I'm concerned our weakness on the inside sticks like dogs bollocks as our biggest weakness and if it is not addressed we will never be anything more than a mid-range team.

I'm happy with most aspects of our list, but inside is a glaring and I mean really glaring weakness.

He can play as a key forward too.

You're not sold on him, but unable to draw on any observations of your own?

Would like a proper key forward, not a pseduo key forward like North Melbourne have developed for ny on a decade.

Give me a Taylor Walker over a Drew Petrie forever
In the end I doubt he lasts to our pick.

Noah Balta interests me

Absolutely, same with Howlett, who destroys VFL as well, both honest as the day is long but they just don't have the tools.
Howlett I can see getting another year as depth.

We have him.

And refuse to play him at senior level.

CRAIG BIRD.
was waiting for someone to bring him up.
If he could do it, surely he would have had a bigger impact last year. Seems to be there as emergency depth. Sad for him, but fair enough that he isn't getting games ahead of Watson. If Woosh thinks he can handle next year then ok, but seems to have run out of time to prove himself

Has played 16 games, you've had plenty of opportunity. But regardless of that, the point I'm getting to here is, why put forward such an opinion of him, if you haven't seen him play?

Because the opinion is one I respect from someone who follows the boy every week, from the NEAFL to the AFL. A GWS supporter.

Point I am getting at here is why do we need another similar player? My posts right throughout advocate a point of difference inside midfielder, something that (as per the opinion of someone I respect and trust) Jacob Hopper is not.

You may be right, because I doubt we'll cut more than 5-6 senior list players and Stanton, Bird, Morgan, Kelly, Hocking and Merrett are probably behind him in the pecking order.

What do people think are good options for bargain basement gap fillers? Someone to do a decent job for a year or 2 while we develop the kids, and then act as depth. Anthony Miles smashes it in the VFL and has shown ability at the top level. Unlucky not to be playing AFL level right now with richmond, and hopefully grumpy enough about it to request a trade. When I've seen him, he seems to have the kind of effort in his game that we needed today.
We need to do what melbourne did with Bernie Vince, but for cheaper if possible.

He's a ****ing cheat and a notorious head ducker. If we want someone to do that than maybe he's an option otherwise he's just another ordinary plodder.

He's there version of Ben Howlett. Only difference is Ben is an honest goer while Miles is a ducking cheat.
