Recruiting List Development 2017 - How do we develop our list?

The one that worries me is Redman - Struggles to get it consistently in the VFL - Is contracted till 2019 so may be a slow burn - He and Mutch are the two i'll be watching in the VFL when i travel to Melbourne.
To be honest thats the draft that freaks me out the most! But if you go through it there isnt much else to pick from. It really was a weak draft.

Darcy Parish - hasnt re signed
Aaron Francis - Injured & unfit
Alex Morgon - anyone see him alive?
Mason Redmond - doesnt have a defined role.
Mitch Brown - whipping boy
Yestin Eades - lol
Michael Hartley - Shows good signs but stuck in VFL.

But we still pat Disco on the back.

Redman has had injury concerns though.

I wouldn't be surprised if he comes on very quick if he can remain injury free.

He knows where to go to be dangerous and has lots of talent.

Needs to put on a couple of kegs though.

I know its only 2015 but juat trying not to get my hopes up like I did with many a rookie in the last 10 years. When did Disco take on the role.
I get what you are saying but Essendon as a club have accepted that they were resting on their laurels over the previous 15 years and just expected premierships to flow.

It's only really the last 5 years or so that they have made an effort to bridge the gap in terms of professionalism.

The new training facilities, conditioning/medical department and talent identification programs are all as good or better than most other clubs and we are starting to see the results of that now.

The draft you mentioned is yet to for materialise but it looks to be tracking relatively good.

Darcy Parish - hasnt resigned Will sign-waiting on CBA!
Aaron Francis - Injured & unfit Club knew what they were getting and took a long term approach-immense talent!
Alex Morgon - anyone see him alive? Injured but back playing VFL-has performed ok considering injuries and hopefully can get a senior game before year is out. Alex is probably the least likely at this stage but I've noticed that his application has really improved and I still think he can make it!
Mason Redmond - doesnt have a defined role. Playing half forward in VFL after coming back from injury. Looks to me a very good player in waiting. Great footy IQ.
Mitch Brown - whipping boy - Very underated performer. Not a world beater but does a good job and at 26 still improvement in him.
Yestin Eades - lol yep lol. At the time we had no small forwards-now we have lots.
Michael Hartley - Shows good signs but stuck in VFL. Developing and will be a ten year player.

It's interesting looking at who we might be de-listing at the end of the year.
OOC: (correct me if I'm wrong with the contract statuses)
Those I think we'll most likely look to re-sign (in order of age only)
Goddard
Baguley
Zaharakis
Brown
Ambrose
Green
Daniher
McKenna
Parish

Those with question marks:
Kelly - Does he go on? ( currently 33)
Watson - Does he go on? (32)

Stanton - Does he go on? (31)
Hocking - Isn't showing enough at his age for mine and seems too slow (29)

Howlett - Depth player (28)
Bird - Depth player (28)

Jerrett - Not showing enough (24)

Morgan - Hasn't shown much but has been plagued by injuries and is young so we might look to give him another chance (21)

Assuming we want to free up at least 3 spots - possibly more, especially if McNeice shows enough to be upgraded - who goes?
Will obviously depend if Kelly and Watson want to/can go on and whether we want them to. I'm not giving up on them just yet though.
If they stay then do we look at Bird, Jerrett, Hocking?

Will add to that that the club knew what they were getting with him. He's a long term high-risk/high-reward type project and it would be a bit reckless to take him on if you're not going to put the work into getting him right. He'd had hamstring issues before, missed half his TAC cup year iirc and then watched all his mates get drafted while he took a year out of footy. We drafted him as an injury-prone 19yo with plenty of upside, he's only in his second year now. I'd be more worried about his motivation taking a knock with so much rehabbing and limited training than the club getting rid of him at the end of his first contract... well unless they start being recklessly ruthless with the list management.

Yeah, I agree.

He gets another year if he wants it.

Others on the list need to go before him.

I'm unconvinced. I don't see it with him honestly, and I know I've been vocal in that. He needs to show a lot more to be retained IMO

Well they got rid of Nyuon and Eades who were likewise high-risk/high-reward and something of a project selection, both for reasons related to personal conduct though, which I don't think Morgan has a problem with? I would think the risk would be lower at pick 29 than it is late in the draft or a rookie pick.

Yep. I just don't see it with him, honestly.

I think he's got a bit of work to do but their would be up to 8 other players in line before him so he's most likely safe.

Which 8, out of curiosity? I'd say only Jackson Merrett and Craig Bird would be ahead as delisting candidates.

I'm factoring the retirements' of Jobe, Kelly and Stanton if they do pull the pin. That may not occur. Then I would cut McKernan(no point in holding onto if they won't play him), Hocking, Howlett. I would also seek a trade for Zaka and Gleeson(contracted?). Obviously all won't go but McNeice may earn an upgrade if he goes ok.

His fate really is tied into his position and other players. He definitely was taken with long term in mind, but we have a few at his rebounding defence position.

McKenna, McNiece, Gleeson all look long term options there.

Short term:
McGrath - will move into midfield
Kelly - finishes this year or next
Baguley - most likely end of next year, expect him to be overtaken by players mentioned above.

Morgan's fate lies with those 3 short term above players. If they decide to keep Morgan around, I suspect it will be to slow build him into replacement to compete for kelly, McGrath and/or baguleys spots in 2/3 years time.

Although I suspect it will be via a delist and re-rookie situation.

I'd certainly take Hocking or Howlett who can impact short term over Morgan who really hasn't shown that much. If it were me he's 1st or 2nd off the list.

In my humble oppinion I see Kelly staying being more likely than Watson, despite the age differential there is a hunger in Kelly's game that cant be denied, he is a warrior.

Stanton will probably stay becauase not even nuclear attack can stop him.

McKernan will probably be dropped, shame because I like him at his best but his worst sucks.

I hope Kelly stays also. His role is important but I don't its one thats going to hold back the development of the new guys. I was under the impression that he had a role waiting for him with the AFL though so I wasn't sure if he was going on.

I doubt we would drop McKernan from our rookie list unless we trade in another ruck given TBC and Berger are quite injury prone and Draper probably won't be ready. I would see us only going with 1 pick to the rookie draft and keeping Draper, McKernan and Long (plus McNeice as a Cat B).

Long is upgrade or delist now.

We are probably getting off topic a little with discussion around trading and delistings as this thread was intended more for discussing how we think they are developing.

I've seen improvement in Morgan this year and I hope he can keep that momentum going and hopefully contribute to our next premiership.

Ah right yep, probably all the more reason to keep McKernan on the rookie list if we already are going to have 2 spots available.

I think if we're looking at the development of our list, delistings is a part of that. I want to see Morgan succeed and while there may have been some improvement, improvement from 2/10 to 3/10 is still not gonna cut it. However he is still young and yet to be able to string a pre-season and season together so I think the thing in his favor would be a large amount of perceived room for improvement if he can get his body right for an extended period.
Because of this in order to develop our list I would prefer to see us look at delisting the likes of Bird, (who is a good bit older) and Jerrett (who has had the opportunity to show more development) before him.
