Recruiting List Development 2017 - How do we develop our list?

I think that the gap in our list is pretty obvious and that's midfielders.

Discoo is on record saying that's what our focus will be at the end of the year.

They obviously have started to address that in the previous two drafts also.

A couple of bigger boys capable of winning the clearances/ contested footy would be good.

I had not thought about it like this and I think it helps to explain why trying to get a read on where things will end up by round 22 is getting harder by the week.

It might also explain why Worsfold has been coy when asked about finals and why he has refused to talk about anything other than the sort of side we want to be.

Look, it's probably not as big an issue as I make it out to be when we're up and about, but Worsfold has always had powerful midfields that can cover territory, and we've basically got the opposite.

The only reason I bring it up was I was reading this thing on the guy that's coaching the Houston Rockets at the moment, and essentially his trademark style is get it, run fast and make a lot of threes, so naturally he needs a GM that's willing to go get him players that fit that style.

He's had 4 head coaching stints and basically for two of them where the personnel has fit he's had and is having great success and the other two have been absolute dogs breakfasts because the people above him have either imposed a style of play on him that's the complete opposite of what he wants to do or gone out and got him pieces that don't fit his scheme at all.

Food for thought I guess

Mike D'Antoni is his name.

He invented the "7 seconds or less" offence in Phoenix which is still arguably the most purely entertaining basketball ever witnessed.

It also helped he had future HoFer in Steve Nash and a monster in Amare stoudemire to build around

No doubt about it, but if you look at his next 3 head coaching stints, the Lakers were a disaster because they went out and got Dwight Howard (which is the last thing he needed) and the Knicks was even worse because they Phil Jackson wanted him to run the triangle.

Now he's at Houston he's got a good GM that's gone out and got him players that suit the system and he's flourishing again

Have two words for everyone regarding this year.

Development Year.

From what i hear they are going to have a look at everyone they like or feel may have a future at some stage this year.

Get set for more managed players.

100% agree.

It's the right play I feel.

Do you have any thoughts on where the club is at?

Not a lot of doubt. We need to keep drafting quality midfielders with run and spread. If Heppel and Myers are going to around for a while then we need the pace and ability to get to the outside. I think Jobe and Stants are doing their farewell lap. Kelly will not be around for ever. We need a fresh midfield group with variety.
I think it is the right move and as much as i really hate saying this another top 10 draft pick may be very handy.

Our list is good enough to play finals now but i don not think it is good enough to be top 4 going forward. We have a good core group but it still needs building.

I agree.

I think as you say more foot soldiers and also 1 or 2 very good players at least.

With expected improvement from the kids we've got and a couple more additions I'm optimistic we can challenge in 2 or 3 years.

Premierships are very hard to win though so require luck also.

If we can get another top 10 pick this year that would be great.

imo Heppell,Hurley,Hooker,Colyer,Myers the only ones we keep the rest need to be told their time is up.

Stanton (retire)
Watson (retire)
Hocking (retire)
Howlett (delisted/retired)
Kelly (retire)
Bird (delisted/traded)
Morgan (delisted)
Gleeson (would trade but is contracted for next season)

Everone needs to 'buy in'

No way are Tottenham Hotspur the second best team in English football.

The players, the backroom staff, the coaches all believe in Poch and his philosphy that even the once tight chairman Daniel Levy has bought in and ia now reaping the rewards of success

Conversely my team have high profile players, a high profile manager and endless resources and yet due to a lack of cohesion and a strong philosophy we always fall short!

Champion team over team of champions every time.

I'm not at all surprised with the data that you are suggesting.

Gone are the days that you keep persisting with players like Myers who aren't delivering dividends on your investment.

We have been very slow on the uptake on that I believe and I think the direction has certainly changed in recent times.

This chart clearly indicates how ruthless we have been.

LIST CHANGES SINCE 2013
CLUB TOTAL
Carlton 51
Brisbane Lions 48
Essendon 43
Melbourne 41
Geelong 41
Collingwood 40
Gold Coast 38
Greater Western Sydney 36
Sydney 35
West Coast 34
St Kilda 34
Richmond 33
Hawthorn 33
Adelaide 33
Port Adelaide 31
Western Bulldogs 31
Fremantle 31
North Melbourne 31

As we identify more talent you would expect that to slow down of course but we still have some on our list that are clearly not part of our future plans.

That can't be right, can it?!

How are we so old if we've had that many changes? Out of interest, do you know if the above numbers include cutting our top-ups? If so, that would make more sense.

Thats correct.

Delisted free agents.
So 33, on the lower end of mid-pack. I haven't looked into it, but I feel like there's a difference between turning over three quarters of the list and turning over the last third of the list twice. Not sure what the implications would be though, or where that leaves us.

This year I would assume will be the last big turnover.

If we nail this years draft then with the players from the 2012 onwards I think we have a good base.

The last two drafts I think will probably how far we go! Parish, Francis, Stewart and Hartley need to continue to develop because the roles they will play are probably the difference between us being good, and us being a top four team.

FWIW, Dodoro has form in saying very little of what he actually does. The man isn't an idiot - why broadcast your recruitment strategy to the competition?
Should be an interesting draft.

D_P_S has a lot of KP players in his top ten which is obviously early days.

It could create an opportunity for a gun mid to slip to us if other teams decide to load up on big guys.

As it stands in my opinion we have enough KP players and if Hartley and Stewart develop into good players then thats two massive parts of the puzzle to not worry about.

Two more drafts to load up on mids and take young fletcher if he works out and we have more than enough depth across most positions.

Wonder which gem he has hiding this time hehe.
Gems aren't hidden anymore.
It is how you evaluate talent compared to others.
You would have to say correct early call on McGrath and the jury is quite rightly out on all 2016 draftees though match looks like a value selection early.
2015 parish looks a good call with Hartley, brown and walla (top up) all looking value selections. I think redman and Francis both have a truckload of talent as well.

I think you've named the right players but I think that's too many for 1 year and we do need to keep some depth.
Stanton/Watson/Kelly are all extremely likely to retire no issues there.
Hocking/Howlett/Bird - we probably need 1-2 of these types as depth. Particularly if you consider the above 3 are gone + Goddard will be in his last year.
Morgan - Still young so its about whether he has improvement in him or not. Wouldn't be surprised if he got rookie listed - which we've tried to do quite a lot.
Gleeson - would entertain a trade if we got a 2nd rounder coming our way but would prefer to get an upgraded player instead. I would love to get someone like Zac Jones for Gleeson + a pick.
