Gems aren't hidden anymore.
It is how you evaluate talent compared to others.
You would have to say correct early call on McGrath and the jury is quite rightly out on all 2016 draftees though match looks like a value selection early.
2015 parish looks a good call with Hartley, brown and walla (top up) all looking value selections. I think redman and Francis both have a truckload of talent as well.
Walla was not a top up.

One thing that did occur to me the other day is that if you look at the list of 34 banned players who are actually useful, as opposed to the ones we kept to feel good about ourselves, we've only retained 50% of players.

And who would they be? Carlisle and Hibberd I'm assuming, who else? (That ain't 50% so there must be others).

Ryder and Cramer.

I dont mind that though.
If we didnt get rid of those guys (Ryder, Crameri, Carlisle and Hibbo) then we dont theoretically have
Zerrett, Parish, Fantasia, Langford or Begley. It's all swings and roundabouts.

I would rather the guys we got in comparison to the guys we lost based on youth and building to our next premiership. Nothing against those guys as player who we lost. They are still very handy (although Crameri isnt playing atm is he?)

I think you are spot on their Grizz!

Although they were losses at the time and they were part of that age group that we are now missing, long term our age demographic should be better with some patience.

I'm confident that most of the players you have named will be better than serviceable players.

Ryder and Cramer.
Crameri and Hibberd left for money, Ryder was never going to stay in Melbourne. Carlisle is one I was half glad to lose, and Francis is pretty much a like for like replacement if he achieves his potential.

We got Fantasia with the Gumby pick anyway.

Crameri = Zach Merrett (We are way ahead here)

Hibberd + 59 = Begley + Clarke (time will tell, looks okay so far)

Ryder = Langford + Cooney (good value for the picks we got, but the picks were less than what Ryder was worth)

Carlisle + 23 + 44 = Francis + Morgan + Bird (If Francis becomes what we think he will then he'd cover Carlisle on his own anyway, like for like, and he's younger)

I think the thing is that we would never have been allowed to win a premiership during that period of time anyway, so in some ways liquifying assets while they're still worth a bit and getting younger players that will actually be around for our next tilt is probably good anyway.

Ryder, Hibberd and Carlisle under Worsfold but with no Merrett probably wouldn't be winning us flags today anyway, but then maybe without losing them we could've improved the midfield through free agency? How's that for sliding doors, Damo?

We're heading in the right direction, but we've gotta start playing the kids a bit.

Stanton and Zakka playing this weekend, whilst not playing a single player picked up in last years draft, is totally ridiculous.

I expect Jobe,Watson,Hocking,Stanton,Howlett etc not to be there next season and be replaced by kids from last years draft and this years.

Surely Jackson goes? The bloke has had so many chances.

Brown and Hartley will be fighting for the same spot. I think Bird and Smack will get the chop along with J.Merret

Jack Merrett should have been cut three years ago. He literally played one good game and got six years on an AFL list because of it.

Some else has mentioned but Essendon do have a history on hanging on to average players for far too long. imo unless they are an exceptional talent then players who don't look like improving after their first 2 years should be moved on.

There seems to be a few schools of thought for rebuilds:

1. Senior players are important to protect and teach, lets blood a few kids with them in lesser roles.

2. Select best 22 and let kids develop through the seconds system and they'll come in when ready.

3. Blood all your kids so you can see who rises to the occassion, only elite senior players or those important structurally get selected.

There seems to be benefits to each and it's about selecting what is right for your group. Fremantle weren't responding well to the second option and switched it up to the third and are now getting good results. I think Woosha is naturally inclined for the first option, but I believe the third is what is right for our group currently.
