Recruiting List Development 2017 - How do we develop our list?

Great post
I reckon worpel is the only bloke who will definitely be available at our pick
I would take a few players in front of worps in the first round
Yeah I feel the same but Worpel does fit the description of a speedy inside mid he just doesn't have the class of Cerra and LDU. Cerra looks the most likely target for us for our first pick with LDU a doubtful slider and Worpel a bit of a reach

I really like this guys analysis as he divide's the team up into Mids, Forwards and Defenders and measures each area against the league average.

As indicated below our midfield is rated the second worse in the AFL for clearances and turning those clearances into F50's.

More encouragingly for offensive rating we are 3rd and are very successful at kicking a score when it enters our F50.

What I find to be even more encouraging is our strength in the D50. As we are aware premierships are won with a balance of defence and attack and it appears we are performing well in both areas.

If we can find even just another 10% performance from our midfield all indications are we could have an extremely exciting team.

Last year, about half of our best 22 were made unavailable, so we were forced to play a lot of young kids.

I was told a long time ago - and have seen myself - that in business, the best discoveries and achievements often actually come about through necessity, not great ideas. You're forced to do something... so you do... and it turns out to be of great benefit.

Last year, along with a few others, the major beneficiaries were:

Fantasia - 19 games after just 8 across his first two seasons.
Hartley - 19 games in his first year at the club with the unavailability of Hurley and Hooker etc.
Tipungwuti - 21 games in his first year.
Parish - 20 games in his first year with a huge number of mids unavailable.

Now some of it can be put down to natural development, but there's no way any of those four would have played so many games if we had a full list available. Tippa would have been playing VFL and the other three in and out of the side.

Hartley is still a bit on the fringe but as he showed last night, is a capable AFL full back. The other three are legitimate best 22 players and Fanta and Walla are two of our most important players.

That's what the pain last year got us. So what was the lesson and did we learn it?

It really is true - get games into talented kids, and you're rewarded in following years.

Kids constantly get dropped... they have poor weeks, their form doesn't deserve games, they don't have the tank, they make errors... they're frustrating, basically. That applied to all the guys above at times last year. But when they simply get games, their development gets fast-tracked and you're rewarded quickly.

We're not gonna win the 2017 flag.

So what is the lesson here? We have so much talent on our list. Is there an argument to just play them?? Begley, Francis, Langford, Laverde, McKenna, Morgan, Mutch (when fit of course)... do we just play them? When they're battling to run out games or playing poorly? Imagine if we could turn another four of them into genuine best 22 players in 2018... we'd be very well placed to have a proper crack.

No you do not just play them. Parish, Walla, Raz , Hartley , Brown etc got games because they performed to a certain level week in and week out.
There has to be a certain standard to meet. I will use Langford as an example. Currently Howlett is getting a game in front of him. Now a lot will question that but until Langford can play with a harder edge and his team defense is on par or close to it then the lesser player holds his spot.
Getting easy games is not the answer. Having standards is.

Based on what?

This thought that games are "rewards"?

What if getting more and more senior games under the belt fast tracks development and gives us better performances sooner?

There evidence it does.

What evidence ?

All the young blokes did not play last year. The ones that did achieved a certain level be it fitness, willingness to embrace game plan or just good form.
One classic example last season was Long. Not picked early because form and game level not up to it. After 12 or so VFL games where he met or was close to the standard wanted he was given a few games.

Another example, Francis , given a few game to see what the level expected is (which i do not mind) but not just given games late in the year because he was well bellow standard.
Same this year. McGrath up to the level early. Understands what is needed. Francis for various reasons not up to the level. Made to work to the level.

The young players who played last year did so because they where at the right level early. They would have been good enough to force their way into the side anyway because they are good players. Getting more experience helped but they where at selection level.

Did playing 17 games last year make Langford a better player this year ?

There is no one way to deal with it. It should be a case by case scenario. However there always needs to be a standard that needs to met otherwise you just create reward for no effort or improvement.

I would love nothing more than to play Langford and Begley and a few others from the VFL but as Ant said they still have work to do. I would be prepared to play them however if we absolutely know that we cant compete in finals.

For everything this club has been through I think we owe it the senior players to continue to fight until mathematically we are without a chance. I'm a bit of romantic when it comes to footy and I will never give up on the team until its over and this team hasn't given up so neither have I.

I would love nothing more than Jobe and co. to win a flag and I havent given up on that happening yet! This is a young and extremely talented squad and any type of success we have for the remainder of this year will greatly assist in accomplishing what I personally believe is going to happen if not this year, definitely in the next three or four!

I think there's a lot to be said about winning games as well, even if you might not be a chance for the flag. Playing too many under performing kids will result in less wins. Sure, they're getting match experience, but not necessarily learning how to "win". We were forced into it a bit last year and the supporters and club weren't expecting much in the way of wins. This year is a different story, we all may not expect a flag, but we wanted improvement.

Tend to agree with the theory that if we are out of finals contention then you give a few players that have worked all year and improved a reward so they know how much more they need to work on.

We are at an interesting stage. The last 6 weeks we have played sides in the 8 or around other than Fremantle and the last 4 weeks have shown we have been match all of them despite losing 2 out of the 4. For the club and improvement IMO opinion you keep building on that form and game plan and not go away from it and go into a false development mode.

Yep, I wouldn't be straying to far from the direction we have now.

Good football is not only about personnel its also about tactics and strategy.

For me the coaching department are really developing an exciting gameplan and by changing a few personnel that can really effect the dynamic of the team.

If we start carrying a few passengers and the gameplan starts falling apart then you change the players.

Other than Howlett, which players would you have the kids in at the expense of from last night?

Depends when you think we will be able to finish top 4 (let alone entertain the thought of a flag).

So my ridiculous answer to your question would be someone like Jobe Watson. Is he gonna be there next year? Dunno.

Kind of a moot point though, as he will always be picked as we probably "owe" him.

Cant rush it.
Parish will replace Howlett.
Ambrose will vy for a spot with Kelly
Someone in the midfield is going to be very unlucky to come out for Langford, but he's banging the door down

Begley & Laverde look like they could replace Goddard and Watson eventually.

we are well placed for midfield depth if 3-4 of Mutch, Begley, Laverde, Clarke, Langford and Francis come on to play through there

We played them last year out of necessity.
Time is now to make them earn it.

Howlett, Myers, Baguley, Kelly, Colyer would obviously be next on the block if we decided to go hella youth.
all good depth to have around.
Howlett -> Parish
Myers -> Langford
Bags -> Ambrose
Kelly -> Francis
Colyer -> Begley

good kids to come in, but i'd like to hold at least Howlett, Myers, Colyer and Bags for depth.

All of Baguley, Kelly and Colyer are first team players so I wouldn't be dropping them.

Baguleys position I dont feel has a replacement yet. Neither McNeice or Morgan have convinced me that they can cut it.

Kelly should be covered next year by Ridley but I think hes important this year.

Colyer is still 25, so not old by any stretch.

It's funny, 12 months I'd have agreed with you re: McNiece but I've been very impressed with him after watching him more closely this year. I think he'll be promoted at the end of the year honestly.

I'm a fan also but hes a bit of an in between player for mine.

He's Obviously a good kick and he's a very good intercept mark for someone so small. What concerns me is he's not a lock down player and can get lost in traffic.

He's got time this year to work on it but it will be at VFL level due to being a rookie.

I feel Baguley will be offered another year with the intention of him and McNeice fighting over that spot next year.
