Recruiting List Development 2017 - How do we develop our list?

There is too much focus on simply making the finals. Who gives a shit about limping into September and getting pounded? Now, I am not saying that we will get pounded if we make the finals, far from it, but what is important is playing multiple meaningful finals campaigns. You don't become the Dogs of 2016 by default just because you're an unfancied participant in finals.

"Chasing finals" is making short term decisions at the expense of the long-term which common sense repeatedly demonstrates are decisions for almost no tangible benefit. Last night is a perfect example.

Is anyone going to say that Langford would not have been capable of matching Bird's contribution? While it is pretty clear that the most fans are incapable of closely watching the game of a cult hero forward, to understand that there is more to being a good forward than kicking two cheap goals, are we going to say that Begley was incapable of playing that role?

What happens if we make the finals and there are injuries and it is Begley and Langford who are next in line and who have been playing VFL the whole time? We're 'excited about the opportunity to play them' of course.

We aren't just chasing finals Bruno V. If we make finals it will be meaningful. Why can't it be ?

Our story is as unique & special as the dogs and opportunities and circumstances like these might never happen ever again.
Already of the top 4 we have beaten the Cats & Port and come close to beating the Giants & Swans.

We were always going to take a while to gel together. It would seem right now that we are starting to gel and with our draw we stand a real chance of finishing top 6 and having a real crack at history.

Finals is just a fringe benefit of getting our list to gel and learn the playing style. This year was always going to be a development year as we were adding the suspended players to a very different list to when they left. Finals would be great but Woosha has said a few times now that the year may be considered successful even if we miss.

Over the next couple of years , I would imagine Baguley, Watson, Kelly and Goddard will be gone from the current best 22. So with that in mind, a future best 22 looks like:

Ambrose Hartley Gleeson
McKenna Hurley Francis
Zaharakis Myers McGrath
Laverde Daniher Fantasia
Stewart Hooker Tipungwuti
Bellchambers Heppell Merrett
Langford Parish Begley Ridley

Toss up between Ridley, Begley and Colyer. With also Mutch, Redman and Clarke developing well in the VFL.
Draper also developing well and hopefully ready to take over from Belly down the track.

We definitely need to recruit another young key forward. D_P_S, would Suttherland or Hayes be available at our pick and who would you rather?

For a key forward it's Sutherland or Brander. Hayes is a Ruckman first I'm still not sold on him as a forward. Sutherland still may not choose footy so I think we need to wait out the year to get a better idea

Mark Harvey is the special guest on this edition of Bomber Radio.

The three-time premiership player is in charge of the backline at the Club this season.

He talks about the way the group is coming together, the development of Conor McKenna and Martin Gleeson, what makes Andrew McGrath such an impressive player, Aaron Francis' shift to defence and where his future may lie, how good Adam Ramanauskas could have become and why the players needed some extra oil while Kevin Sheedy was coaching.

  1. Preparation good for North. Particularly for the older players.
  2. Focus on driving the gameplan.
  3. Areas of improvement. Improve the fundamentals. Focus on where they are turning the ball over. Individuals responsibility to improve there own game.
  4. Ambrose best lockdown defender. Hurley best attacking defender. Hartley is evolving. Collective unit evolving well together. Real focus on drive and rebound.
  5. McKenna learning game. Belief is starting grow due to playing in seniors.
  6. Gleeson was challenged by leadership group early in year. Starting to show composure in the air and at ground level. Harvey thinks he needs to keep getting physically stronger. Still has stuff to work on. Would like for him to evolve to the level of playing on Key Forwards.
  7. Baguley- Desperate. Gives you everything. Plays on the best small forward most week but McGrath starting to take on some of that responsibility to free up Baguley. Had a major knee issue so credit to getting back to the desired level and not showing signs of age. Wont die wondering.
  8. Francis-had a chat with coach and requested to play back. Ramping up ground coverage. Reads game well and needs to work on kicking decisively. Push for senior selection. Sees him as a third tall. GPS close to required level.
  9. McGrath-Fitted in well. Hangs off Kelly, Hurley & Baguley. Highly intelligent.
  10. Kelly-Enjoying playing. Plays to play finals so that may be encouragement to play on. Travelling from Geelong. Interesting decision.
  11. Rama-Star player!

Good call there. With Daniher, Stewart, Hooker and also Laverde potentially forward much better to develop Francis as the third tall Defender rather than third tall forward.
Players and coaches having a good relationship for a player to ask to play a different position and the coaches to take that on board.

Stewart coming on so well has really given us some flexibility in that regard.

One of the things that Harvey touched on was that the players are responsible for there own form. I like that he has taken the initiative and asked to play in his more natural position. I don't care where he plays as long as he bosses it!

Also with Kelly and Baguley relatively close to retirement, as well as McGrath likely to move into the midfield, there will be greater opportunities to establish himself in the back six.

I don't see any point in Kelly playing on when we need to development someone younger to play his role.

Won't/shouldn't be here next year:
  • Watson
  • Kelly
  • Hocking
  • Stanton
Maybe gone next year:
  • Bird
  • Howlett
  • J Merrett
Not on list in 2019:
  • Goddard
  • Leunberger
Wish Colyer had a shorter contract to keep him honest.

I would be keeping Kelly if he wanted to stay.

Don't exactly have a lot of players lining up for that role.

No doubt Dodoro has nailed some picks but he has been our list manger for like 20 years and we still don't have a list that's capable of playing finals maybe it's time we go with some young and who is ahead of the game.
How do you keep up with yourself? My head is spinning with how many different opinions you've had in the last few hours...

Spot on. Its rinse and repeat the same stuff each year. The club has zero depth and if we have a good injury run with an old team we may squeeze into 9th or 10th position.

We wasted valuable resources on O'meara last year. What a joke and ballsup that one was.

There is nothing ruthless about the way we operate. We need more mids and we should be moving heaven and earth right now to secure one of those guys. Kelly, Martin whoever is available just get them in.

We accelerated McKennas's development this year by picking him when he got to a threshold level of adequacy. It wasnt weight of performances that got him into the team. We needed a player like him.

Ridley is every chance of being a viable selection for round 1 next year as a half back as is Redman.

Francis is another to throw into the mix especially if Gleeson can improve to become a genuine small defender.

Change is forced. It's almost impossible for anyone to over take Kelly and the longer we delay the change the longer it will take to identify that player.

I'd be disappointed if next year Gleeson, McKena, McGrath and Hartley did not improve enough to cover the loss of Kelly's experience such that not having Kelly costs us games.

I'd also say thay today is not the day that should have anyone querying the list. We lost that game because we didn't adapt to the Dogs' efforts to counter our run and then didn't have the composure in the last quarter to win that game. I'd tip us to win a game against the Dogs Next Week.

Kelly has had a very good year.

If you want to throw that away on the back of one game be my guest.
