Its not really any wonder why the GCS cant make any headway with 17 other clubs wanting to pick the eyes out of their list year on year on year. Not withstanding the GCS own brand of ineptness too.

Rowell was always a flight risk. Huge Carlton fan. To the point where the AFL gifted GC pick 1 as a priority so that they could take his best mate in an effort to get him to stay.

It’s exactly what happened to GWS.
Every player who comes out of contract seems gettable so clubs seem to put extra time into them.

I'd be astounded if the Suns weren't looking to lock down Rowell and Anderson long term, they'll have to over pay them, but I suspect they are comfortable with that.

It's the reason they did the deal with Geelong this year. To clear some space to overpay Rowell and Noah.

Draft talent, trade for needs

Yup same old story.

I’m not sure I agree with that approach anymore given clubs now do extensive research to know who is available at their picks and have plenty of opportunity to trade up or down to get the player they want.

After the draft period we need a small forward, ruck/forward and a KPP so I certainly hope we take a player who fills one of those needs more than a midfielder who happens to be “best available”.

We got torched all those years ago going for the best available “sugar” Kane Lucas instead Talia who would have filled glaring need at the time, so I’d hate to see us make the same mistake all these years later.

Not sure we need a small forward. I'd prefer a medium who can make things happen. Someone like Zak Bailey.

Yes we need a small and/or medium forward type who can regularly kick goals.

As Gethelred said our goalkicking drops off dramatically after Charlie and H.

None of Owies, SOS, Fish, Martin, Honey or Durds can do it. Mots maybe in time.

Some of those guys play other roles like pressuring or connecting but don’t score.

Teams can double team our two stars knowing nobody else will hurt them.

I’ve said it a few times but we’ll go as far as our half forwards take us.

I don’t rate Rowell much at all, would love Anderson, he’s a definite type we are missing.

I might be on my own - but I think Rowell will be an absolute star and end up a Brownlow-level player.

Yes he's a similar type to Kennedy and Hewett but with all due respect to those 2 they don't have Rowell's class.

His stock is low at the moment as his body has gotten knocked around but he's still super-young (just turned 21). If he were interested in joining Carlton next year you wouldn't look that gift horse in the mouth.

Anderson you'd also love to have on board but he has significant issues with his kicking (2nd in the league for turnovers).

I'd imagine they'll be looking to do the same with King, Hollands and Ainsworth too, before they add their 4 quality academy players in the 2023 draft. I believe the CEO has acknowledged that there has been some bad management in over paying the wrong players that should never have been over paid in the first place.

Absolutely think Martin can kick 30 - 40 goals a season, playing out of the goal square.

Hope so. Unfortunately he's spent his career at Carlton either returning from injury or about to be injured.
Geelong had Stokes and Close combine for 60-ish goals in the regular season.
Fisher and Durdin were roughly half that.
Motlop was on track for 20ish (if he'd played the whole year).
Would be great if we can get that 50 combined between the 3 up to 80+. I expect Motlop would have the biggest upside of the 3 as he was in his first year. Would be a brilliant result if he could get 30 on his own.

Motlop was a goal a game player. I think he will increase that to 30 goals in the regular season if he plays every game.

I was concerned Durdin didn't have enough tricks but late in the season he had 2 goal of the round contenders. He should be better than a goal a game player next year.

These guys are both young and tracking well

This draft is pretty "meh" to me.
I think we need to be aiming for next year, so I'd trade out of this year on draft night.
Something like pick 10, F2 with any team we rate finishing bottom 4 F1 F3 and really go hard at landing Reid next year.
Probably have to seek permission from the AFL to make it happen, no harm in asking.
