The average list management decisions come from the club doctrine of being afraid of full re builds and to make a list that continues to make finals

Cripps does a good job at achieving the goals of that doctrine

The problem is that it's a shit philosophy that no one other than Geelong* and Sydney can successfully turn into premierships

Port don't have a shit ton of farm land ready to rezone or a academy advantage like those clubs

This is David Koch and the boards fault as much as it is Cripps
Yes and no.

Carlton, Essendon and Richmond haven’t exactly attracted endless talent via FA or trades. Richmond got Lynch after a premiership and Taranto and Hopper under the guise of one more push. Collingwood has attracted more players but still have no key forward, and their best 3 players are gifts via FS.

The Dogs list is built on FS and NGAs. Suns, Lions, Swans, GWS - all getting some gifts via their academies.

I’m not sure our list management is that different to anyone else’s and might actually be better considering what we are working with and against. What we have missed out on, is really high quality FS and NGA draftees and paying less than what we should for them. Jones and Mead we paid market rates and neither are world beaters. Burgoyne was about right and looks to be a gun.

Collingwood got Daicos at pick 4, Moore at 6, other Daicos after 30, Quaynor 13. Dogs have had Liberatore, Wallis, West, JUH, Cordy, Croft and Darcy. Cats, Suns, Lions etc all the same. Hawthorn got McCabe, Maginess, Dear and CJ. These father son or NGA selections have given these clubs an extra, often early, first rounder that they wouldn’t otherwise be entitled to. Or a quality player that slides in the draft and they pay less for. Often clubs have been able to take other picks prior to their academy players. Hell the Rodan boys are somehow in the Essendon NGA despite being father sons and their dad being a current AFL umpire - how the hell is that bringing non traditional talent to AFL? It’s a massive rort and has meant huge advantage for some clubs over other clubs.

If port want to improve things, we need access to all indigenous kids in the metro as well as country and NGA kids. And start a breeding program for any 100+ gamers

Did you quote the wrong person?
What's that got to do with the doctrine of finals every year? Rather than peaking and rebuilding
You talk about how they get the talent in but the doctrine of finals every year is more about filling gaps in the list instantly rather than more long term strategic planning

Bang on, and being afraid of rebuilds extends to being afraid of development.

You can't play a developing tall, even when you've got injuries, because they take time and hey ho we need to win 6/10 games.

Who cares if we're building to anything, winning 6/10 games now is all that matters. And we'll gift games to low ceiling spud after low ceiling spud to that end.

Three of the four players listed in the best players for the magpies aren't on the afl list. The only player listed was Williams who seems de-listed already. No depth means no competition for spots.

Is Shay Linke a potential afl player?

Sorry didn’t explain that one.

Was meaning it’s easier to fill those gaps instantly and compete every year if you get a leg up via your NGA academy or a father son.

So if you’ve already got Moore and the Daicos brothers, it’s not to hard to pitch to Houston, Perryman etc.

Swans got Campbell, Gulden, Heeney, Cleary, Mills - that quickly builds your team and allows you to snap up a targeted trade or FA.

Dogs didn’t have to have an early pick to get the best key forward in the game and another ruck forward option + another key forward + all the other FS and NGAs they’ve gotten.

Port have had to build their whole list. Jones and Mead are probably fringe 22, only Burgoyne seems to have made it and he is a flanker. So our desire to be a Geelong or Sydney or Collingwood is made all the harder.

The doctrine of being perennially competitive is risky and costs a club, like Port, more as we don’t have the selling points of other clubs or the NGA/FS players. However, it’s the only way to go for Port. I’m not sure we have the finances, sponsors, fan base, and relevance to drop away for 2-4 years to rebuild. This is the thing that annoys me most about the Koch and Hinkley era - they haven’t corrected this.

The club seems to have the stance that it respects players wanting to return home and are happy to accomodate.

While very noble, I can’t see how it benefits the club at all.

It fits in with our unofficial club creed which is 'good humans first, athletes and competitors second'.

Up until the Logan Evans pickup, I would've been pessimistic but I do have a bit of hope we have someone stored away.
Be a bit of a scandal but wonder if any clubs would hide people away and level them up if you know what I mean

Pretty sure Carlton had a guy from amateur footy rock up like a ****ing tank

The old stasharoo.

Hopefully we are eying off a few local guys.
Somewhere a TDK clone. I think we should def be looking for next season non player signing of some basketball player. Although that didn't exactly work out for us last time.

If it was Sunday afternoon under 9’s it would be a great story for the papers.

Unfortunately this is professional sport with millions of dollars flying around.
Bottom line,Good Guys run last.

It was a pretty massive offseason last year but with Carr taking over and him wanting his types of players, this offseason should be hectic.

We don't quite have he capital though.

What are you talking about? Daniel Bass was a superstar.
I'm not wrong though. You're misreading me.

He didn't work out for us because the club didn't persist with him. Looking back with hindsight we should have given him more opportunities. I think we made a lot of dumb decisions 2009 to 2012.

I recall saying that it was the nature of football. I think now I look at as he didnt fit the needs of the club or the direction. As I said, looking back we should have kept him.

The list we had in 2010 to 2012 was the worst I've seen in my lifetime
