Losing Butters would be devastating (particularly after Houston last year), put a line through the club for the next 5 years.
Hinkley/Koch & Co truly trashing the joint on the way out.
As much as it would hurt losing butters. You guys have lots of young talent. JHF and Rozee with 2 top 10/12 picks from a draft will keep a bright future.

If Butters wants to go to the Bulldogs, they will have to shimmy a few deals as they don't have enough.

They have 9 and 27. Another low draft pick and we are around the area.

Busslinger could be interesting.

Butters would make any Vic team good but he would really help out the Bulldogs.

I still think he's staying.

koch's club of destination!
These guys just make it up as they go. Unfortunately port people have bought into the lies!

Stuff Polec. Dude left because Port had lingering concerns over his foot and wouldn’t offer him near to what North were willing to offer and look what happened. He barely could get a game after his first season with North with his foot issues flaring up again and got delisted with one year left to his contract.

The good thing that came out of the trade was acquiring Pick 12 which became Zak Butters.
Butters was selected with our first round pick.

Polec to North was the first step in getting to pick 5 for Rozee.

2024 will go down as our worst ever trade/draft.

Luko and Berry will end up being ridiculously expensive pickups.

We targeted these players thinking it would keep us top 8 with the changed gameplan. Now we would take Reid, Gross and the future first.

Montgomery killing it in the VFL.

Completely cooked.

I think there are 6-7 players that are just not adding to our list or culture and don’t seem to have a future. Our problem is that several of these guys are relatively experienced, so if they go our list gets even younger and less experienced. It’s why I would be pushing hard for free agents or those on the fringe at their club.

We are missing midfield depth, particularly a tough competitor.

Macrae would be bloody excellent at Port right now. Or Luke Parker.

Given our rubbish key position stocks at both ends, I wish we had of gone a key position player with our pick 13. Its still far too early but picking a flanker in Berry over an Armstrong type I predict will haunt us. We have neglected talls in the first round for a long time.

Needed a key defender since Aliir is getting on and both Esava and BZT won't ever be A-graders. Walsh is still developing his craft and Moss is a free hit. Though Port needs a small speedy lockdown defender ASAP because we can't keep using flankers as lockdown defenders. They are not reliable enough to provide defensive accountable.

Part of this makes sense with Hinks there because even if we pick them, he wouldn't develop them or give them a chance.

We should ban trading in any players for the next 2 years.

Only picks or free agents.
I don't think we need to go that far, but we shouldn't be trading out future 1sts without a damn good reason to do so. Those things are rolled gold because they always give you an out - you have a good season you don't care about them, but if you have a bad season like this one you get to look forward to a top 5 picks.

Losing them for absolutely no reason like we have the last two years to get in Esava Ratugolea and ... I don't even know what we got in the Houston trade as even if you take out the first that we gave away we would still have lost the trade, should never, ever happen.

Honestly our list sucks d1ck

We have so many holes it’s not funny.

No FF
No CHF
No CHB
No FB

The guys we have playing there are pockets or flankers or old af
I've been saying this since the trade period. We've had a coaching problem for a long time, but now the list sucks as well.

I don’t know, reckon our list is a rebuild on the run and we’ve come unstuck whilst we’ve tried to learn a new game plan and had injuries to key personnel. Not to mention the ambush after opening round or getting the Dons with a point to prove.

The first four rounds have seen us be without, to varying degrees,;
  • Ratugolea, BZT, Marshall, Lukoscious, Lord, that’s our spine
  • Burton, perhaps our most experienced backman, and Jones, a first choice or top 25-7 player
  • Soldo, our back up ruck and, for about 10 rounds last year, our lead ruck
  • Butters, our best midfielder and player

Add to this we lost Houston our second best player, best kick and most important distributor in the off season. This has left us without his skills but also meant there is more attention on Farrell, Sinn, Evans, Jones and Bergmann. Alir also has had to beat his man, intercept, set up the defence and lead a defence lacking any experience by himself.

Our forward line lost its lynch pin in Dixon. Marshall, perhaps our smartest forward, isn’t there. Our smalls don’t know where to be to crumble. Mitch has had to step up and lead that forward line - barely has 50 games to his name. SPP is returning from a long lay off. The forward line has to have time to gel.

Our midfield lacks depth. That’s evident by it falling apart without Butters. Sweet is an ok ruck but needs to click with his midfielders as his taps get sharked. Our set ups and connection are poor. Our wings are actually quite good, but they’ve barely got 10 games between them.

If you look at the numbers, we don’t have a premiership age or experience profile. And, at season’s end, we will likely see Finlayson and Atkins go - that’s about 250 games experience, Williams and Soldo another 80 or so games and Charleson, Anastasopoulos, Jackson and, maybe, McEntee - that’s midfield and small forward depth.

However, if we can keep Bergs and Butters, get another 20 or so games into the list, develop the game plan and build our ruck/mid connection and let the forwards gel, then we might improve towards seasons end and be ready to bounce back next year.

It’s clear that our coaches and list management gambled and got it wrong. Tad worried about Berry but I’m sure he’ll prove me wrong. But it’s seems like we’ve had a perfect storm to start the season.

There is also plenty to be positive about. Whitlock, Moraes, Lai, Cochrane all look good. Lord seems to have trained his arse off and learned to kick. Lorenz showed signs last year. Burgoyne has lifted his game to another level. Richards looks solid. I reckon Moss and Walsh could come on quickly - both look very athletic and agile. Bergmann could really explode if we can free him up from playing as a key back and let him attack more.

We need to get around the team and get excited by the youth coming through.

As to what we need and who we can target. Well I’ve mentioned some experience options already.

Another, which won’t happen, is Milera. FA and a good running back.

Some midfield options that wouldn’t cost a whole lot.

  • Neil Erasmus - can’t get a game at Freo but his size and athleticism Would be a point of difference in our midfield
  • likewise Ed Allan

We’ve also seen a number of VFL midfielders make the step up. Guess that’s what we were hoping would happen with Watkins. I would keep a look out for other state level options that we might be able to get on the cheap and have them play a role straight away.

Actually Taylor Adams would suit. Competitor, tackler, contested player, tough.
Get him to travel with boaky to get the body right. Wouldn’t cost much in picks or cash.
No point recruiting anyone above 25

Erasmus as mentioned if we could get him for a 3rd rounder plus.

Will Brodie as a free agent could be worth a shot. He could help fix our clearance issues and is a big bodied contested player. Could easily take Wines rotation in the mids.
