So We have Sam Mitchell, Tom Mitchell, Mitchell Lewis and Seamus Mitchell. Am I the only person confused on which Mitchell are we talking about when reading a post?
And for some strange reason, I get confused between Seamus Mitchell, Jack Saunders and Josh Morris. They all seem like the same player to me.

I would hope S.Mitchell is a bit more aggressive and we see a bigger clean out than that

By the way, no utility in delisting a Cat B rookie like Pepper.....just keep him for that third year
Exactly. We’ve seen what this list can do. Despite the injuries we know it’s not taking us to the promise land, no matter what else Mitchell can extract from this list.

It’s all about creating a new list from the old one to drive us up the ladder.

So, I posted that we possibly trade 1 or 2 players, you then say that you can’t see many trades, but then name 3 players! 🥴
I said possibles, Howe and Hanrahan seem to be getting a bit of love from other clubs and Shiels isn't really in my best 22 anymore with more mids coming through etc.

Good to hear from Bruest tonight confirming no damage to his knee. Possibly a Freudian slip saying fingers crossed he can get out there one more time in the brown and gold.

"...pull on the brown and gold one more time for season 2021".
There was no freudian slip at all.

Posted this on the Drafts board thread about Tom last night, but will post it here too.

Tom Mitchell was set to leave at the end of the year. This comes from someone very close to him. Couldn’t get much closer, to be honest.
This may change with Sam in the chair, or I guess if we want to make significant list changes it may not.

My rating, for what it's worth, of our team depth is this, from shallow to deep:

Midfield - very shallow. Trade the best there and there is nothing left.
Front line - a little depth. Can afford one high value loss. Maybe two if they are smalls.
Back line - lots of high value depth. Can easily trade two big name players and still have heaps of talent on the field.

So looking at the problem from the "what can we afford to give up" perspective rather than "what do we need" then I would look for us to make some bold and unexpected (although not be me... ;) ) trades for picks from our backline talent. The midfield will stay where it is. The forward line may have one trade for picks. I don't think we'll be trading in talent but may pick up an FA if it presents (which the media will call a trade because #hawthorn).

Obviously, if guys ask to be traded then that's different, but all things being equal and the decisions on who to offer being completely in our list management's hands then I think the backline will lose some big names and the front as well. But the mids cannot be thinned or we'll be destroyed on field.

Also, Shiels. I wouldn't trade him. I know he's expendable but I don't think the value he'll bring (a fourth rounder maybe?) will be worth the Sewell-like depth he ads. Someone who can bounce in and out of the side doing a good enough job to fill in for injuries. It depends on who they think they could get for Shiels' pick. But I think a fourth round draftee will be less valuable that a body who can still absorb punishment as the draftees we get from higher picks from more valuable trades mature in the midfield. We need one or two more seasons out of Shiels before the new guys (yet to be picked) can walk on their own.

We don't have any mids waiting to bust out, right? Jai Newcombe was a under the radar gem, right? There aren't another three of them at BH I don't think. Could be wrong. But I think our backline will be near cherry ripe next year. The forward line in 2 years? The midfield? Needs some big uplift before we're ready to predict championship grade.

There's such an interesting mix across this and other threads regarding the future of our playing list.
It's universally accepted that our midfield is our weakest part, but at the same time our midfield has the players with the most trade value.

How many of our top end mid-fielders can we afford to turn over in one block?
Do we have the cattle to step up and take the place of those traded?
Do we have the ability to let our top end draft picks develop in the VFL for a time if we do let go a lot of our top end?
2022 is going to be a wild ride, but I'm really looking forward to the start of our offseason because I think Smitch will start delisting/moving players on ASAP

Sorry, I’ve edited my post. I shouldn’t have said that he will ask for a trade as what I was told was that “he would be leaving”. But as I said, this may have now changed.

Assuming his manager has already sounded out various clubs, the move might have its own momentum that Sam wouldn't have a strong interest in stopping?

Everyone else thinks the same of our midfield as we do. So why does that have the most trade value?

For me, here are the people we could afford to trade that would bring in really good picks. Not all at once, but a few from this pool would get big attention from teams in need:

* Sicily, Impy, Hardwick. Those three would get really high picks and we could afford to give up two, I reckon, and the backline would still thrive.

* Gunston, Wingard. These two would get moderate picks and we could afford to lose them. Wingard maybe a high one from someone desperate like GCS or Freo.

* TOM and JOM would get moderate picks, not top ones. Maybe there is a team just on the edge like Brisbane or Melbourne or even Geelong that needs just one more midfielder and would be willing to pay for it. But without those two the midfield collapses even harder so I'm not sure we could afford to give them up.

Otherwise guys like Ceglar, etc, are pocket change. Round 3 picks unless we happen to grab someone desperate enough to give a round 2 for a specialist position.

This is why I don't get the trade JOM/TOM/Wingard push! Unless they have put their hand up and said I want out!!! You would only consider it, if the trade was heavily weighed in our favor! Otherwise see out your contract champ!!! If anything you would be trying to bolster mid field depth via sneaky trade (ala how we got Scrims & Impey) or the best mids available by the draft (Currently picks 2, 21,24)?? I think too many of us have overlooked the impact of the injuries we have sustained to quality players. Add Sicily, Day, Impey, CJ and Gunston to the side that beat Bris and the list looks a lot healthier!

TBH not to fussed if we trade TOM out, he must be worth an early 1st round pick + a late 1st round pick. We simply can't go into season 2022 with the same midfield mix, we need to add pace, pace, pace & skill.

I’m a little torn on the Tom Mitchell thing. Losing him will certainly ensure we take a step back before getting better. Even with him though, how long until we’re a solid chance of making and winning any finals? By the time we’re up and about, how old will he be? 30? 31? He might be keen for success sooner rather than later

Definitely has trade value now - especially with his form over the last 5 or so weeks. He’s a genuine gun and any team wanting to win a flag in the next 2 years would happily cough up for him.

At the end of the day, if we can get a very good trade out of him, I’d probably be willing for the short term pain for the long term gain.

I'm all for trading mitchell out. Our midfield worked better without him in their in 2019. Worpel has also found his form and I think jai after a preseason will Offer more defensively then Mitchell.

I am happy if Mitchell want to go (for the right price) but we need to replace him with Matt Crouch for free. We get smashed in the middle now let alone without the best ball winner in the comp.

Only reason I would consider MC is if we were in the position to trade our first round pick for Adelaides first rounder + the potential first round compensation pick they'd get for him.

Supposedly Ollie Wines is having a terrific year according to Kane Cornes, whilst rubbishing Tom. These stats are interesting.
