We effectively got Toumpas for a pack of crisps. We would have got such quality players at picks 50 (Richmond took Oleg Markov) and 68 (Essendon took Michael Hartley).
I think Toumpas gets a really hard time on here. Yeah he's made some mistakes but he's still young, only a year older than Amon.

Not everyone is gun from the get go like Wines. Some players take time and I reckon Toumpas showed enough when he played for the Magpies to suggest he can do better next year.

would we go down the path of signing the winner of the recruit, had it be Matt Eagles?

ruck/fwd, 26 and a SA lad.

or will we be put off by Wagner?
I posted the merits of drafting him earlier in the week but I think we were gun shy after Wagner turned out to be a bust, though this was a different case as he's a kpp prospect i'm surprised we didn't at least nominate for him.

Overall though i'm not surprised he picked Brisbane he made the right call as that's a club he's almost guaranteed to get games at, he couldn't be any worse than a number of others that played for the Lions this year.

I wish him all the best in his AFL journey, seemed like an alright lad to me & he's a Port supporter.

I'm not expecting Toump to be on our list beyond next year. Needs to lift big time.

So what's our list situation?

We had 39 players, that's already one vacancy

John Butcher, Sam Colquhoun, Jay Schulz and Alipate Carlile gone, that's 35 senior players listed, five vacancies on the senior list

Kane Mitchell gone from the rookie list, technically we don't have any Category A rookie vacancies, but if we stick with 39 senior players, there'd be one

What could happen from here?

I can't see Paul Stewart being offered another contract, six vacancies

Nathan Krakouer has done enough to be upgraded to the senior list, five vacancies

Is Will Snelling a good chance to be upgraded too? four senior vacancies and two Cat. A rookie vacancies - one live pick, Luke Reynolds and Emmanuel Irra as a Cat. B at the rookie draft?

We need to make a minimum of three draft picks, that includes Rookie upgrades, we're currently without a 2nd round pick due to the Dixon trade, and with five vacancies, that means we'd be signing at at least one Free Agent (Jarryd Blair?) and trading for a second round pick

Re Matt Eagles, if body language is anything to go on he looked a tad disappointed when only 3 clubs showed any interest in drafting him, and one of those clubs was GWS, why t f would he want to go there to be 4th or 5th in line? o_O

More importantly, for 2 representatives of each of the 18 clubs to be in attendance, and only 3 clubs show interest would have to strongly suggest that it's a gimmick show and its days are numbered.

Would guess the disappointment was that we didn't nominate for him even though we basically have 6 guys on our list taller than 196cm, possibly 5 if Lobbe gets traded which is looking less likely the closer we get to trade week.

I reckon if we showed interest it would've been an easy choice to pick us over Brisbane even if there wasn't as much potential game time on offer.

Maybe we were told not to, as we took the first one.

Thing is, there are 13 (probably more) players who are absolutely tradeable. Of course, not all of them will be traded. What this is designed to do is send a message - to put them on notice that they are expected to perform to a high level on a consistent basis. They'll respond either of two ways:
1. It could be the making of them as men and footballers, and lead to a tough, successful culture in the playing group; or
2. They fall apart under the pressure, in which case the club will go for a full rebuild, and build the playing group it needs for success.

KT was right to say that the players need to decide whether they're able to meet the standards the club sets. Allowing it to become known that 13 players are considered tradeable is partly designed to get the players thinking about that question.
Very sensible, and I hope you're right. My post may have appeared that I favoured treating the guys with kid gloves, this was not what I meant but the club does have to be careful not to go too far. After all the most successful club of recent memory sings "We're a happy team at Hawthorn".

The Tom Jonas situation is a bit of a mystery.

No contract and no talk of a trade destination.

Odd.
Really hope he gets another crack with us - even if it's a one year deal.

No one hits the contest harder than him in our team, and has the ability to play small and tall. If he can just use that aggression and attack on the footy in the right way, I think he adds massive value for us.

Please God let us get rid of Stewart and O'Shea before him.

Clurey and Austin are better options than Jonas in my view - esp Clurey whom I think is like for like and can actually kick... with both feet....

Yep, if none of Stewart, O'Shea and Jonas are on our list for 2017 I'll be very happy. We'd have taken a big step to getting a more balanced list (begone HBFlankers 'r us), removing those unsuited for the reduced interchange game.

Odd.
From The Advertiser last month;

"Injured Port Adelaide defender Tom Jonas is ignoring opportunities around the AFL to seek a new deal at Alberton.

Jonas, 25, today confirmed he has sought a new contract at Port Adelaide — and does not want to be at any rival AFL club"
