If we can land Steele then Mashall firms as a big chance at our 1st pick if still available
A big no thank you for Marshall. Do not want. Has only been okay in under 18s never starring. I don't want the only reason port to use pick 9 on a kid is that he is tall and plays in the forward line.

The Advertiser today states that Clurey was the second best defender in 2016 in terms of winning 1 on 1 contests (behind Morris of the Dogs). He's ahead of names like McGovern, Hombsch, Harry Taylor, Tom McDonald, Josh Gibson, Tarrant.

Do. Not. Trade.
Confirms my thinking that he should be in our starting 22 as I posted in the Your Best 22 in 2017 thread yesterday

Sport statistics are the worst type of statistics.
I really like Clurey, but I don't believe the stat.

Haha, you can't just not believe a stat. You can believe that the stat doesn't indicate that he is the best defender in the comp - which almost everyone would agree with - but the stat itself is just fact.

Now Clurey didn't often take the best forward which would help, but one thing I really like about Clurey is that he isn't afraid to go for the intercept mark rather than just spoiling 100% of the time (looking your way Cam "double fist the ball over the line when you're the third man up" O'Shea). So it doesn't surprise me at all that he would rank very well in this area.

I really don't think Krakouer has done enough to be promoted. So many lazy bloody kicks last year in the backlines, several of which directly turned over for a goal. Also a number of lazy moments in defence where he couldn't be bothered running with his man. Sure, he also had some very nice moments - but the inconsistency in effort is killing us and Krak is a prime example in the playing group of that. I wouldn't be upset if we delisted him tbh.

Also, people seem to be getting overly hyped about Steele because they hear his name on this board a lot. I'd suggest heavily watering down expectations of him if he does arrive. The NEAFL is a full tier below SANFL level, and his performances at AFL level have been ok but not anything great. He is no certainty to walk straight into our best 22.
Absolutely agree re Krak. Definite no if we are serious about consistency and effort.

No unemployment statistics are the worst. Work one hour a week, and you are considered employed.

One of the few blokes in our side that can actually kick the pill. Defends well and can be swung forward as well. Definitely offers something.
when he tries, sure. lazy half-arsed efforts resulting in finding the opponents chest happened too often this season.

he stays but if we didn't have to upgrade him(?) we wouldn't.

also have changed my mind re:clurey in the last 2 games or so. would have taken a pick in the low 20's probably going to take an unlikely low teens pick to move him now.

Okay I was being lazy. Let me rephrase:
I don't believe the statistical ranking quoted is a true reflection of the relative abilities of the players. I don't believe Clurey is the 2nd best 1-on-1 defender in 2016 in the competition.

* I haven't read the article because I couldn't find it online.
** Before anyone has a go at me, I rate Clurey and don't want him traded.

I get where you're coming from, but tbh that's your failure to understand the statistic rather than the stat itself. The stat doesn't claim that Clurey is the 2nd best 1-on-1 defender in 2016 in the comp, it claims that he had the second highest win % of 1-on-1 contests in 2016 in the comp.

In those contests it's recorded whether the forward wins (marks), the defender wins, or even where the boil is spoiled. Defenders are typically marked in terms of best 1-on-1 loss percentage - so keeping the forward to the least wins possible. This is seen as a better reflection of the game for a defender as KPDs are often trying to spoil the ball - hence a defender essentially "wins" his position if he either spoils or marks. Marks are obviously better, but a spoil is a win too. So being second best in the 1-on-1 wins just means that Clurey was more prone to marking the ball than most other KPDs and also has the ability to stick them more often than not. His 1-on-1 loss % might actually be average - and yes that would indicate that he is only an average KPD in the comp.

Hombsch, Clurey and Austin should have us set for the next decade. Pittard and DBJ need to stay back there too. Broadbent/Hartlett/Krak/Jonas/O'Shea/Stewart on thin ice.

Wow we have a lot of flankers. What the hell Ken? We know you played back there but this is ridiculous.
