It's what they do. TAC Cup particularly it's obvious that it runs like an encouragement award when you see the names who get among the BOG. VFL same story, not to the same extent but it happens too frequently to ignore.

IMO there's also an aspect of cushioning the blow when/ if he's named tonight. Being at the game I certainly wouldn't have had him in our best 3-4, but he was solid.

If he's done enough to meet the match committees KPI's for senior selection naming him BOG at VFL level gives them something to fall back on even if we feel that it was total BS.

It's also worth noting that internally the parameters for a BOG performance are likely to be very different to our own.

It's a load of shit if you are best on ground then you are best on ground.

If you played well then you get in the bests not BOG.

Were you at the game? Do you know what the parameters of the VFL teams BOG are?

Remember it's a feeder team for our seniors. What they're looking for is guys to play their role and the result will come from doing that. Perhaps he played his role better than anyone else on the ground?

I'll equate it this way. Sidebottom to the masses was not our third best player overall last season yet to the coaching group he played his role to that standard. Sometimes what we look for does not reflect what the club is looking for internally.

Edit: I understand exactly where you're coming from unfortunately though these things are never black and white.

I know what you are saying I just disagree.

BOG should be reserved for THE best player or the player who had the biggest impact on the game itself.

You have 4 other slots to fill best 'role' player up with in the "bests" list.

Jeff Garlett was dropped for the melbourne game, perhaps a chance he wants to get out of the down spiraling Carlton. He would fill a serious need for us and is a 40-50 goal a season crumbing small forward.

As long as he does not Kick along the Ground

I expect it's a wake up call from Mick. Similar to dropping Waite. Clearly both are part of their best side and required players.

If Garlett comes onto the market, sure you'd make a play at him. He adds pace and crumbing ability up front we lack. But I don't see him going anywhere as one of the few players under 25 on that list with any talent.

Mick gave him a wake up call at the worst time, its more stupid than professional from him, it was a must win game from the blues and he drops his key forward and best crumber.
Micks pride got the better of him, Waite and Garlett could have easily kicked 6+ between them.

It really comes down to what Garlett wants, does he want to go through a potential 5 year rebuild, or does he want to play finals for the rest of his career, he would be huge for us and apart of us going forward. Any ideas of his current contract status?
Do you think theres a possibility that 3 or more players could leave Carlton if they finish bottom 4-6 on the ladder?

I don't have the specifics of Garlett's contract status.

Gibbs I expect leaves for one of the SA clubs. I can't see Carlton losing anyone else of note in addition to Gibbs this offseason. Regardless of how low they finish.

Hopefully we recruit Mitch Thorp over the off season, would be more than handy for us and hopefully he hasnt given up on a return to AFL.

I'd be keen for sure.

Dont know what that would cost us in a trade though?

FWIW Sidebottom also got enough votes to finish in 3rd in the 2013 didaka medal also, I'd say he was overall our 3rd best player probably along with Cloke.
The bigger surprise (and probably more relevant to your point above) was Macaffer at #6 - finished =12th in the didaka, but obviously did what the coaches asked for most weeks.

The crumbing forward is a huge hole for us.

Clearly we need mid-sized defenders, but with Langdon and Scharenberg I think we are well served in the future here.

Would love Garlett

I agree a Garlett would give us a different edge up forward. There isn't much pressure to keep it in the front half and not a whole lot of pace in the squad.

Down back I'm starting to increasingly like the group we've got despite my initial concerns.

Scharenberg, Langdon, Seedsman, Toovey, Williams, Fasolo and Maxwell still playing well is a strong starting group.

With Ramsay, Oxley and Sinclair as depth. That's pretty good once you get more games and more years together into that group.

We could have a midfield who can rotate back (maybe a Seedsman/Langdon develops into this, Seedsman can also rotate onto a wing and Fasolo can be a fwd/back) but I quite like from a group from a long term standpoint and I'm not even sure another player needs to be added unless we lose Williams.

Agree with this, also wouldn't be surprised if Broomhead and/or Freeman are trialled down back to start their careers.

That's an interesting angle and one that I didn't consider.

What it certainly indicates to me is that those being critical of Sidebottom (of which there's a surprising number) should get more involved with the didaka medal!

Definitely more voters would be welcomed!

I've heard that Garlett has been linked to Adelaide and is a big chance to go.
Betts being at Crows also trying hard to get him over.
