Some absolute, Lions-fed garbage in that article.

“Brisbane's six-year offer to retain Bailey is understood to be financially less than Adelaide's, but the Lions have alluded to rival clubs that they would be capable of matching a rival free agency bid for the forward and forcing a trade.”

If they have the coin and are willing to spend it on him, why not offer him that much now? Pure spin.
When are the journos going to actually stop and think for a split second before writing complete snot like that. Bailey has said his preference is to stay. If the Lions match an offer, it wont force a trade. Bailey will take them up on that matched offer and will be a Lions player for life.

It's what you trade off when you want access to players and coaches. Beveridge (who wrote the piece) works for the AFL – there's no way he's going to publish anything critical.

I think you get a good six years when you are in a window.
First Wndow 1993-1998. Made Finals Three times. Two Flags 97/98
2nd Window 2002-2007 . Made finals FIve times. Three Prelim Finls 02/05 and 06
third window 2012-2017 - Made finals Four Times. One Grand Final Loss. One Prelim.
Fourth Window 2024 - 2029 In it now. Dont mess it up again. Good drafting and recruiting please.

Adelaide were still bottom 4 for age and experience in 2024, and finished in the bottom 4 as well. Don't really think you could say they were 'in a window'. Nobody wins flags when they are among the least experienced/youngest lists in the league.

In 2025 we moved up to 9th for age and 10th for experience, and actually made finals. That's the start of the window for me - hopefully it's more Brisbane in 2019 than Adelaide in 2002.

Nah... 2024 counts. We were literally 1 blind goal umpire away from playing finals. Yes, we still had a very young & inexperienced team, but it was still a team which played well enough to qualify for the finals.

We were a very young and developing team who needed finals experience, but we were definitely not in the premiership window.

We were ready to walk through that door, but we were about 18 months away.

It's Brad Crouch all over again.

We offer 2 years at $2.5m, Brisbane don't match.

Playing for the Ballarat Swans in the Ballarat football League this season and getting amongst it.

Not in 2024 we weren't.
Yeah... we were. Were it not for one blind goal umpire, we would have played finals that year. The only reason we didn't play finals was because of an umpiring **** up. On performance alone, they were good enough.

They may not have gone deep into finals, but they would have qualified to play in the finals series.

That was 2023.

2024 we were bottom 4.

I agree with you, but you're thinking of 2023. We finished 15th in 2024.

That would mean we were 'in the window' in 2023 (the year this happened). In my view we were firmly in the rebuild phase and had one of the youngest lists in the league, we just had a good season and almost made finals. But this might be a terminology thing - I think of the window here as meaning that we were in a position to contend for a flag or at least a deep run in finals, not that we are in danger of sneaking into 8th.

The 'in the window' claim is true of 2025 (and 2026). Last year bringing in some more experienced players like Cumming, ANB, Peatling etc. as well as another year into the young players who were part of the rebuild moved us into the middle of the pack for experience and should be the start of a contending phase. Plus the team had some results on the field and actually played finals.

Either way I don't see the significance of 2024. It's either 2023 (the first time the team won a decent number of games post-rebuild, matched it with finals sides and led the league in scoring) or 2025 (the first time the team had a moderately experienced list and made finals).
