Pay overs?

A second round pick can get you a decent ruckman every year.

You're far better off waiting and trading - the number of ruckman who become decent is pretty low, so why spend a pick on them so they can then sit on your list for four years until you know?

We have non ruckman sit on our list for 4 years before we make a decision.

Exactly and sometimes longer, multiple mids, forwards, backs, but posters some how have an issue with drafting rucks.

Now if we were a successful club we could think we were on the right path, but when you see clubs more successful than us draft and develop rucks, you’ve got to question our logic.

But some won’t see it that way, they’ll just back the club in because they support them, the thought they could be wrong never crossed their minds. Then they try and argue with posters who point out the need to draft rucks.

Well I tell a lie, not some, just one velvet loving club crusader.

We won't be making any live selections in the rookie draft. It will just be picking up Burgess and Schoenberg again.

For whatever reason, the club decided we would only bring in five players this year. When we managed to land three trade targets, had pick 4 and also had a father/son locked away, that was it. Everything else is just administrative fluff to make the list line up.

Not sure I would have necessarily wanted a ruck, though swapping Strachan for someone like Knobel makes sense.

I would have maybe liked one of the young tall forwards? Help us with options post Tex?

My main criticism is we should of had the list space for one more pick.

I struggle a bit to give credit for picking Draper. Fantastic pick-up but we got in the position to get him via a really poor year. I don't think its worthy of the club patting itself on the back too much.

My thoughts are probably that we’re better off with Draper for the long-term, given how devoid of talent our team looked a lot of the time this year (especially minus Rankine)

We’re definitely in a better position to keep rising up the ladder now, than we were at the end of 2023 - that said, Nicks and his dumb decisions are still there, hopefully he improves

Like Sydney gave up a 2nd rounder and pick 46 for Grundy (and it was only that high because Collingwod/Melbourne were paying a chunk of his salary). Their team made the grand final in 2022 traded in their ruckman (hickey), along with picks 34 and 60 for a future 2nd, future 3rd and picks 58 and 62.

Top 4 Port Adelaide traded pick 50 for their starting ruckman. Finalist hawthorn got Meek and a 2nd rounder as part of a trade for O'Meara.

Geelong traded in premiership ruckman Rhys Stanley and pick 60 for a 2nd round pick. Collingwood traded for their number 1 ruck - Darcy Cameron and pick 62 all for the price of pick 56.

I wasnt surprised. The club appeared to not be chasing new ruckman from a long way out. It was operation boost midfield this off season. The Ruck department is the last one awaiting the rebuild. So in that instance ROB has done a fantastic job really. Id be surprised if we dont draft and trade for a ruckmen next year now.

100%. Its going to be interesting with all 3 ruckman on our list out of contract at the end of 2025. I would like to see us possibly grab one in the midseason draft like we did with Toby.

Its been pretty interesting reading seeing how many people were upset with us overpaying for ANB with a late 2nd round pick because it might have cost us the opportunity to draft a player that went at pick 53.

Now you going to list the successful clubs who have drafted rucks? Didn’t Geelong just draft one? Didn’t they use pick 24 on one in 2021? 2 young drafted rucks, hmm, No comment?

Ok, why haven’t we traded in a ruck over the last few years if it’s so easy? Didn’t Moyle knock us back? The bloke we could have drafted over a 12 year old back pocket? Surely you’re not defending that?

And you don’t rate rucks, you want midfielders, well how about rucks who play like midfielders. Dodson plays like one. We could have got him with a pick in the 50s had we not stuffed our list up, are you saying you wouldn’t have even used a pick in the 50s on a ruck who plays like a midfielder? Even after you called pick 58 nothing?

We went for Moyle who knocked us back, the bloke we could have drafted instead of Parnell.

What? We want all our rucks to come out of contract at the same time? That’s madness unless you plan on replacing them both at the same time, that should be interesting and it’s 2 rucks, not 3.

Why? You dont rate rucks so why are you wanting one?

Will definitely be an interesting watch - with ROB out of contract at the end of the year and NO DOUBT looking to be someone else's solution to the ruck problem.

A Melbourne team with a shot at the title will pay nothing much for him and he'll be more than useful.

We will be down to Toby Murray with Thilthorpe as the backup ... I expect us to just get Draper for 2025.

Frankly, that would be better than our incumbent.

The idea of getting Dodson and developing him for probably 7 or 8 years into the next superstar ruckman, really makes very little sense for our team in the phase we are in. Happy to see where we are at when all these "great" ruck prospects hit their straps. I'm very much more in the "when I see it at AFL Level - I believe what they are" when it comes to rucks.

That wasn’t the only player available with the ANB pick and as BACCS posted Dodson had an off field indiscretion which put clubs off.

Develop for 7-8 years?

Yeah much better to use that list spot on quality players like forward Burgess, midfielder Schoenberg, midfielder Jones.

Our list has duds who play other “important” positions, couldn’t possibly waste a spot on a ruck.

I can understand the not wanting to spend big money or a high draft pick on a ruck, but I see zero issues with having a developing one on the list and or using a pick in the second round or later to pick one up.

Yep. Now if one could guarantee we’d be able to trade one in why haven’t we? Maybe for one the player like Moyle can say no. The same bloke we could have picked up in the MSD instead of Parnell.

Now there is no sound argument one can make for that decision.

I know people hate the idea that either of these guys being seen as ruckman.....but perhaps they are being seen as ruck options ? Just not pure rucks
