Not really no.

You dont have to look too far back in our history to know thats not the case.

With Port keeping Bergman and likely Butters (this year), and not having their first rounder, there is literally nothing Port can offer St Kilda to satisfy them in a trade.

I see him staying for 2 years ala Bergman, then exploring the option again if as we expect, St Kilda still suck.

Port feel they have a premiership quality list. I'm sure they and NAS think that he can push them over the line

Port have got absolutely shocking depth, like actually deplorable. They've spent years trying to plug holes with Temu versions of good players. They gave up a 1st rounder for a deal that included gaining a Ratkins and losing a top 3 player at the club.

If they are somehow allowed to garage sale their way to enough picks to get NWM, I will puke.

Can’t they offer future firsts for next year and the year after now?

They can, but they'd need a pretty good reason to be able to do it given the AFL was "meant" to be tightening that up.

3 years without a first rounder isnt something the AFL would like a bottom 9 side to be doing.

If NWM says he wants to go to Port, he'll get there. He's out of contract.

My guess is that if NWM decides he wants to be traded to port, Bergman may still be on the table

I think signing him for another couple of years keeps other Vic clubs at arms length and gives port a little more control in negotiations

I doubt a club in St Kilda's position would be placing huge value on mid range future draft picks. They'll want a decent player and picks

Port will probably play finals again next year. They've been hammered by injury and will get a fairly soft draw next year

The real way is Port give up some shit and St Kilda are forced to accept it
And they have been very successful at giving up shit in the past and still getting what they want. The more teams involved, the better, so they can disguise what they are getting away with.

They usually overpay for their shit players outside of JHF when West Coast and GWS somehow both decided to except well unders in that trade.

What I expect would happen is Port give up their 2026 and 2027 first rounder. To satisfy league requirements they'll trade with someone that has a very late first rounder (especially this year when the last first round pick could be ~30) and bring that in for a second rounder and swap all sorts of stuff to balance it out

I would put balance in inverted commas in your post. ;)

If Port genuinely thought we were a chance I don't think they'd be pumping up the chances of getting NWM so much.

Other years they've had other targets to fall back on getting. This year it's all the SA eggs in that basket and they will look even more like a 2nd rate outfit if we trumped them for NWM. You would assume if they weren't sure they'd be playing it quietly quietly.

It certainly won't be balanced in favor of St Kilda

I think some here are underestimating the moves Port could make. They could trade their future 1st for multiple later 1sts (to meet requirements) and then send only one of them to St Kilda. Or trade a depth player to ensure they have the later picks to meet requirements.

Leopards never change their spots.

This is more than ever they'll need something to get over us.

Aren’t future picks traditionally discounted? Can’t see Port getting one first let alone multiple firsts.

And I doubt a late first gets NWM to Port. The whole “he nominates he will get there” still requires something in the ballpark of market value.

Port Adelaide paid pick 9 and pick 20 (as a future pick) for Jason Horne-Francis with some later swaps and stuff. They also got Willie Rioli in the deal. This deal was hardly in the ballpark of market value for a pick 1 the previous year.

I'm suggesting something very similar would happen if NWM nominated Port. They'd offer up their 2026 and 2027 first round picks and maybe their 2nd this year, and then manipulate some pick swaps so they meet the pick rules. Which is as "ballpark" value as JHF was.

What would St Kilda do if Port don't offer enough value and NWM demands to leave? He's an uncontracted player. They'd probably use the PSD as an unconvincing threat and let him leave at the 11th hour as what always happens

Spot on. Saints are screwed and things will get nasty. Angry SOS incoming. Saints would be hoping he chooses us. But that’s very unlikely.

You’re saying there could be multiple laptops slammed shut???

I’m just not sure if there’s enough pizza to get this deal done unfortunately.
