The problem with going with neither is that you need to find a ROB replacement, for an affordable price. There are arguably plenty of cheap options out there for replacing Strachan. The options for replacing ROB are far more limited, particularly at relatively low costs in terms of draft capital.

Stats show that his ruck work is much better than you & many others think. Agree with his play around the ground though.

The problem is finding a better ruckman, for a price (draft capital) that we're willing/able to pay. There aren't many better in terms of ruck skills, though there are plenty with better around the ground play.

Should have, could have drafted/rookied a young development ruck either late through the National Draft or rookie draft in recent years instead to all it appears we kept Himmelberg on as a break glass in emergency option even when he wanted out a year earlier. Now we're in the position where if ROB goes at year's end we;re stuffed. God forbid if we have to use Thilly in ruck if ROB cops an injury because Strachan just isn't up to it.

If ROB stays on we will still need to replace Strachan that's a no brainer (Harry Boyd didn't get taken in the rookie draft or PSD), interesting to see if the Saints try him out with a view to takinng him in the pre-season supplementary period.

Either way we have to start putting time into young development rucks.

Yeah we clearly should’ve left a spot open for at least one ruck this year, you could make the case whether that would be a developing ruck and/or a better backup. Preferably should’ve been both

Alas, we’re now stuck in the same situation until next year, unless there’s an LTI over the off-season and we can sign Boyd/Crossley

We're not stuffed if ROB goes. There's always more potential rucks than there are playing opportunities. We just need to prioritise someone and aggressively pursue them. It's sounded like it's been the bottom of our list of priorities for a while.

I don't think Draper is better than ROB, but it'd also be nice to not have all the ROB debate every week.

We swapped pick 23 and 26 last year for pick 14 and Burgess. We probably had to give him an extra year to agree to the trade in contract

Unfortunately Nicks dug that hole for Reid/Hamish, but we could’ve easily gotten ourselves out of that hole by encouraging Berry to move on. With Peatling/Draper in the door, plus Taylor, Dowling and Edwards developing, he’s not really that essential

We should’ve maybe also encouraged one of our contracted players that aren’t best 22, but might still have some value (looking at you, Chayce) to explore their options. You could encourage Smith/Laird to do the same, but 1) they’d dig their heels in, and 2) they’d have little-to-no value at their age

Cook hasn't improved one iota since the day he was drafted. There is no reason whatsoever to think that he will make it at AFL level. He should have been given his marching orders the same day as McHenry.

The decision to give Berry a 2-year deal, then trade for an upgrade on him (Peatling) is inexplicable.

Agree that this year was Cook’s year to take the bull by the horns (especially given the opportunities he had) - which he didn’t

I’d have probably given him a one-year deal, but that’s just me

It's even worse if as rumoured ROB wants to head back to Melbourne for studies/ ROB seems to me to be the kind of guy that would have made that clear to list management well in advance of coming up to Free Agency, if that's the case it's doubly bad management by our PTB's..

Happy with retaining Schoenberg, Borlase, Strachan and Cook if we’ve exhausted other options, the issue is the multi-year deals mean we can’t explore other options. Were there seriously other clubs offering two-year deals?

I don’t think it’s revisionism to say even in 2023 a Crossley type could offer as much as Strachan if he was truly intent on getting two years. Schoenberg I see similar to Berry this year but having shown even less: yes he’s shown glimpses but we have a number of low ceiling midfielders and positional needs elsewhere. Cook has talent but would surely be closer to having other clubs not interested than offering two years for him.

Another blunder: signing Burgess, who directly correlates to losing Himmelberg (despite what some think on here, he’s significantly better depth). I get the need for extra KPF depth but having Gollant and Himmelberg OOC this year and Burgess contracted meant we really had to nail our talent evaluation of him, which we didn’t.

There's only so many you can cut in one off season.

I don't think there will be many issues in finding a bunch of delistings from out of contract players at the end of 2025.

Smith, Tex, Burgess, Schoenberg, Strachan, ROB, Bond, Murphy, Milera, Crouch, Taylor - and I'm probably forgetting some.
