Players develop at different stages, Berry has really started to drive his legs from the contest and burst from stoppages with real speed likely because he's gaining confidence and it appears the coaches have him now playing way more offensively rather thn playing the defensive mid role he seemed to be pigeon-holded into previously. A lot more dynamism about his game now.
I agree with this, definitely effective with his burst now, but he still needs to find more of the ball on the spread. Can’t really have both him and Peatling as primary rotation mids averaging only 18-20 touches a game

This is true, he’s shown flashes of this before but on Saturday night he was getting of the stoppages into space regularly

Would be interesting how we split CBAs, in that event. If there’s 30 in any given match (ie 90 to go around for our mids):

Dawson - 20
Curtin - 16
Peatling/Berry - 15
Bailey - 12
Rankine - 12
Rachele - 12
Thilthorpe - 3

That’s without accounting for Draper or Soligo, too

If we add extra mids I would start pushing Dawson the wing

Getting Bailey to come over would be a massive get. Our midfield would be so much improved. Curtin, Dawson, Bailey, Draper, Rachele, Rankine etc
That looks like our best midfield since the Roo, Macca, Goodwin & Edwards era.

Credit where credit is due, we are building a very flexible list with a lot of multi positional players and teams are clearly find us hard to match up on. Still have some gaps to fill in the list but there is a lot to be excited about.

Why do you think we're no chance of getting him?

i know we wouldn't the favourite, all things being equal, but if he wants to contend for a flag then we are the standout choice right now.
Likely will depend on the success of Saints over the next 2 years.

If they keep missing finals NWM likely to look elsewhere.

Nice change to be having more quality net ins than outs from trades.

Not that i think we could get him, because it looks like he wants to return to vic but i wonder if we have asked the question about Butters

Surely all clubs ask player managers about out of contract players they are interested in. Wouldnt be the first player to change preferred destination.

Did I read somewhere that we ditched the sell the farm mantra. Probably because we were saved from ourselves.....twice during the rebuild and one of those has seriously turned into a dud.

If port lose butters this year they may well ve entering full rebuild territory right when Tassie come in. Nas will be coming out of contract end of next year and if we land Bailey this year and are right up around the pointy end of the ladder and finals, it might just tilt things in our favor to maybe convince nas to come to us over port. Bailey this year and nas the year after......

WHEN Port lose Butter to the Dogs...

Yeah, i expect the saints to continue to hang around in no man’s land, while port are staring down the barrel of a rebuild

I don’t think that’s the driver. Plus I don’t think when you’re signing a 7 year deal, the current season is the be all and end all. Clubs will sell a rosy future and you’ll believe what you want to believe.

But it won’t be about one season.

That’s exactly my point. Just because a club has just had a finals playing season, doesn’t mean they’re not going to spend the next 7 out of them. So when we and Port sit down with him, we both sell a rosy future full of playing finals. And he’ll believe Port just as much as he believes us if that’s where he wants to go. Assuming he even cares.

Players know when a team is good or it’s shit. If we are playing good footy, making finals and with the same squad who are in their prime, you’re going to think they are closer to success than a team sitting at the bottom playing shit football.

Exactly. Port are probably worse 2019 Crows heading towards a 2020/2021 style season. Its going to take them a while. The other thing on Baileys mind and through his manager would be that next years draft is heavily influenced with Tasmanias concessions so where exactly are they going to get their talent from. The Crows, Richmond, North, West Coast took this long and still going with uninterrupted drafts. Port are in for a long time in the wilderness. One draft wont fix the 70% dead wood on their list.

But his choice I guess.

NAS won't come to us. I am sure we will have an offer on the table again but it won't happen. We were only in it last time to help with the negotiations.

I think we are going all in on Bailey because he is the best player we have a genuine chance at in the next few years.

What makes you so sure?

Just gut feel, I think the JHF and other Port connections help.

Port have some tough years ahead but he is still young so if he did go to Port they are not going to stay down the bottom for his whole career

I doubt we could afford Bailey and NAS certainly not without pushing a few good players out.
