"Former first-round pick Darcy Wilson remains unsigned beyond this season at St Kilda, and after the Saints spent big on an array of talent last year, Wilson is reportedly “going to let this play out”.

Pick 18 in the 2023 national draft, the 20-year-old Wilson’s rookie contract will expire this year, and amid some hot form to start the season, his value is only going to increase.

Nine’s Damian Barrett reports that “other clubs are coming” for the midfield utility, with Seven’s Mitch Cleary last week tipping North Melbourne to be one of those keen sides.

“He’s got no desire, at this stage, to work out what he wants to do in 2027 just yet,” Barrett said on Nine’s Footy Classified.

“He’s going to let this play out. There’s a lot of interest in him; he’s known this now for the best part of 18 months, that other clubs are coming for him. St Kilda’s known this too … he is a player they want to keep.

“But, he’s a smart young man — he knows what money is now being offered to players that he’s playing with … he knows the players who have been with him at St Kilda are on money that he’s not on.

“He, obviously, is aware of that, and wants to line up his wage with those wages.”

It was revealed last week that Mattaes Phillipou is set to earn $1 million per year in 2027 and 2028, so Wilson, who’s further along in his development than Phillipou, would surely be eyeing at least that figure.

Last week, Cleary said the Saints needed to “worry about keeping their own”, before noting that the Kangaroos were eyeing pacey types.

“The Roos have got all the money in the world … They (the Saints) are throwing money at everyone, well they’ve got to worry about their own backyard … watch this space on this man (Wilson), the Roos going hard for some outside speed in Darcy Wilson,” he said on Channel Seven last week.

St Kilda signed Tom De Koning and Jack Silvagni in free agency last year, after penning Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera to a $2 million-a-year deal."

Nothing said about us, but we all know that we were interested in him at the draft.

Would love us to have a crack at him TBH.

I've been pretty unimpressed with what I've seen, although of course he is young. Seems like a bit of a turnover merchant

Waaaaahhhh:tired::tired::tired:...."we are angry that other clubs are going to bust our little pay bubble we have going here"

Tough shit brisbane...the same brisbane lucky enough to get 2 top 5 father sons in consecutive years

Not to mention two big name free agents last year

Chayce Jones has a contract trigger for 2027 provided he plays the vast majority of games this year

So we should probably drop him immediately

Even if he was to hit his trigger, a proper list management group would still move him on if that’s what they wanted.
They probably will and we’ll continue our trend of wasting games on players that won’t be here the following year.

The fact he's getting games defines why 2026 looks less promising.
Flip side, if he is getting games and we are still winning come late in the season, his trade value will be higher and tassie will have a swag of draft picks they need to trade for players...no reason Chayce can't garner us one of them

He's not good enough to be considered real depth.

No, he is. Real depth are guys who fringe AFL quality but can be plugged and played in spots in the lineup.

Now, whether it's problematic to have "real depth" is another question entirely seeing depth does clog up your pathways for your lesser prospects to move through.

If he plays to the level he did last week for however long hes in the side, thats exactly what real depth does.

I mean, if you pick up 22 disposals/9 intercepts/10 ground ball gets as the basis of your game, you're not going to be depth for long.

Though, I suppose that is what you want your depth to do, to throw up performances that do raise questions about them being a best 23 member.

I'm just not willing to care too much about his selection until he reaches his 100 games. It's just good business when he is this close. Once he passes it, I would prefer his spot in the 23 is used as a developmental place on a player with greater potential.
There’s likely to be no father son by the time his son is eligible.

You're backing the selection of a player who's clearly not up to AFL standard because there's a possibility his son in 20 years time will knock back playing for Taasie to move to Adelaide?

That's correct, kind of. I think the difference in performance between Jones and his replacement would be immaterial for the next two games. His replacements have not shown themselves to be clearly AFL standard either.

Get the milestone, and any benefit that comes from it and then relegate him to the SANFL with plenty of games to come this season for development in that spot.

If it was 13 games then you would have a point but I dont mind the club doing something statistical to swing the needle an inch

Remember if the club employed Graeme Cornes for 5 more games we would have had a free swing at Chad and Kane

Despite their off field both would have helped us to 2 flags in that 2009-2012 era
