yeah not sure about that. all reports are he is happy in brisvegas. i believe his GF is from there. they have played in 3 straight gfs, won 2 flags and favourite again this year. he is playing great footy in recent years.

assuming all the above is true, what possibly could get him to move besides a massive change in $$ which would be life changing?

Never said he was unhappy. All it does is means the odds of him wanting to move maybe low.

As for dollars, it can be the catalyst as i said.

Nothing is impossible. His GF likely has come to Adelaide several times to meet his family and spent considerable time here already. She might actually like it.Its a nice place and is fast becoming incredible popular.

Anyway the whole conversation is moot because the offer has been made so we will never know if Adelaide would have got a foot through the door without it.

but if they match it wouldnt bailey likely just stay with lions? the main (only?) reason he is moving is $$$

if lions match the $$, he stays with them imo

but good luck them matching him when they are already apparently closed to maxed out with the salary cap and have a handful of absolute elite youngsters likely to be offered HUGE contracts by other clubs over coming years

I think this is all ttue, if they can match it or even get close then he stays.

I don't really get what is involved with matching to force a trade and if you would really just do it out of spite.

It must be more involved than just picking up the phone and telling the AFL you are matching.

I might be jumping at shadows but I've got a weird Charlie Edwards going back to Melbourne feeling.

His post match interview, Nicks post match presser and the baulderstone post match interview all left me with a doubt about his future as a Crow.

Thoughts anyone?
I had the exact same thought

if they match a trade i believe its a lot more than verbally confirming it to the afl. they need to offer up a proper contract that not only matches the total years and $, but also allocate the same $ in what the crows have proposed eg if we offered 2m in 2027 lions would also have to offer that, and then the afl signs off on their existing capacity to match it (and not from promises from lions to clear out future cap space from as yet undermined means)

thats my understanding but happy to stand corrected

and a massive risk i cant imagine any team would take, let alone a team in the lions position, to match out of spite. they would likely see another 3-4m of salary cap commitments if they did and also benchmarks what their other guys like ashcrofts would expect (and piss off mc cluggage who took relative unders to stay in a contending team). so very unlikely they match imo

Thoughts on even if he does request us they could match it just out of spite? If Neale leaves they can. It would clean us out picks wise and prolly lose a berry as well.
I don't think they have enough to...
McClug, Dunkley, WAshcroft, Allen, Draper, Andrews all on big or very big money
Wilmot, Morris, LAshcroft, Fletcher, Coleman Lohmann, Rayner all on decent money or very soon to be decent/big money

How could you possibly know that?
You were pretty certain that it would affect him, how could you possibly know that ??

If, and its a decent sized if, he stays in the side for a dozen or so games this year and we put a decent contract in front of him I doubt he goes anywhere.

Because it's vastly the most likely outcome, same as it was with Worrell. Fans get upset when the kids don't get debuted immediately, but the players themselves know that they're teenagers within a professional environment, and that they're being supported to develop to their best possible player. Edwards had a fair bit to work on.

“I knew I was coming from a fair way back- but I didn’t think that far”

Fair to say he felt his debut could have happened earlier. Like the upset fans.

Confidence in his own ability is great, but when your midfield dont suffer any injuries for a year it makes it hard to break into.

And yes we played Murphy a handful of times, and Smith too much but theres nothing wrong with waiting until a spot opens up in the role he got drafted in and excelled in at SANFL level.

He'll play plenty more with us if he hangs around.

You mean that critical position that we’re thin on talent for?

We persisted with a struggling soligo and only picked edwards when the cupboard was empty. And what do you know, he can play.

They wouldn’t do it out of spite but they would do it to maximise their return.

If they have the means to match the offer then they’ll likely get better value by doing so, assuming the Lions finish at the pointy end again.

He played really well, and im happy for him but I am also wary that we played a St Kilda midfield who would rank even below us on the midfield ladder.

He isnt the first young kid, nor will he be the last to have to wait his turn. Clubs arent suddenly going to come for him after 1 good week, or we'd throw a bucket of cash Angus Andersons way and get him back to SA.

How many games did he play that role though?

I know I know - developing other parts of his game

But your whole premise is he was playing a spot and unfortunately no injuries ever happened - we never played cooked players. Dawson didnt need a rest etc

I would have loved to see him debut last year, he deserved a few games for sure.

yes but the likely outcome of them matching is bailey then staying. and they ultimately dont want that AT THAT PRICE

they are playing a VERY dangerous game offering to stump up 4m above what they really want to pay, or can afford to pay, whilst assuming crows will then offer strong draft picks as compensation. i doubt we would. the reason you offer 10m over 7 years is you are getting an asset free from a trade collateral perspective. no way crows offer 10m over 7 AND also look after the lions in a trade - which would be roughly 2 first round draft picks - no chance of it happening

A couple of minor Jake Lever-ripples from Edwards but nothing to worry about yet.

If he gets pushed out of the centre square or out of the team all together down the track, then maybe we can worry

I wonder how he felt about playing at half back last season in the SANFL?

I also wonder if he looks at Dawson & Soligo both being out and thinking that his spot depends on those sort of absences?

A good coach would see Edwards do what he did last week and think "gee we might be able to give Daws a break from the midfield for a bit".

Would love to see Soligo play 2s this week if he comes back.

It's amazing that we saw a guy with Edwards' frame, his ability to read off hands at stoppages, his burst from congestion

Plus a slightly iffy ball drop

And our thought was "Half Back Flank"

Especially when we had no spots up for grabs in the ones with Laird, Milera, Hinge and Smith all ahead of him in the pecking order.

We thought he was Brodie Smith.

TBH I dont mind the half back stuff, but we had an opportunity to pick him there last year and went with Smith. Thats the thing that annoys me most. If you move a bloke in the name of versatility and he performs there, you play him when theres an opportunity.
