Fagan said that before Round Zero. Cody wasn't a desperate selection.
Got the link because that was what he said when asked after selecting Curtin for the game this week, not earlier.

Strange don't you think considering Cody's played 4 VFL games before this weeks scenario with the cupboard bare if he was such a certainty to debut round 1 before all the injuries struck.

You're right Fagan did say that this week. I can't think of any reason why he would if it wasn't true. Brisbane didn't have to play Curtin this week because the cupboard was bare, as you initially stated. They had other options but chose him as their best. And as for us choosing Welsh in a similar situation, he is odds against to start any AFL game and certainly not this week.

I was interested to see Brisbane giving a debut to Cody Curtin, Dan's 18-year-old brother. There was talk we were interested and maybe we would have taken him over Ludowyke at Pick 50 ,but even if we had I don't think he'd have been filling in for FOG by Round 8.

Brisbane seem to debut their kids a lot sooner than we do, including their big blokes, Logan Morris, also debuted as an 18 and Ty Gallup (19) being recent examples.

In the last five years Wilmot, Lohmann, Tunstill, W. Ashcroft, Fletcher, L Ashcroft and Sam Marshall have all debuted before turning 20 and have a combined 421 games. Now there's some top level talent there but we have Dowling, Edwards, Ryan, Draper, Welsh, Marsh and Ludo in the same period with 22 games between them and little likelihood they will add substantially to that this year.

Of course it's possible Brisbane select better, develop better, and are way less conservative at selection?

Reality is that Brisbane are clueless, they have no understanding of selection integrity or continuity. They’re wasting a very good 23, they’ll go nowhere fast with the philosophies they have in place.

I think it's fair to say if we recruited Clayton Oliver he would be our second best player this year

Talking about Oliver and Petracca - both on huge long term contracts (Olivers partly paid by dees) would we consider:

Patrick Cripps - just turned 31. Dual b/low medalist. Contract ends 2027 google saying only 850k ish

Kingy and Kane saying he could likely be offered up under a new coach reset which is now fait accompli similar to King at Dees getting rid of Pets, May and Oliver

They mentioned Cripps back to WA but Freo dont need him and Weagles are years off success. Cripps has played 4 finals in his whole career and I imagine would value finals

Assuming he becomes only a part of our midfield rotation - doesnt need to be a clear number one - would we offer a 2+1 type deal inc possibly bringing him in as an Assistant/Development coach when his 2 or 3 years playing time is up?
We have no doubt seen the best of him - but we all thought the same about Petracca who is less than a year younger - do we target him? Berry leaves for a second rounder under this scenario - perhaps to Blues even. Cripps thrown into the potential target mix of Bailey, Chandler and Swallow but a midfield rotation of:

Dawson, Rankine, Cripps, Rachele, Soligo, Curtin, Draper and Bailey (Peatling, Edwards etc) - STRIKE ME PINK

Cripps is cooked mate, has one effort in him and is way too slow.
Would suit Nicksy shit style now but hopefully we will move to a faster transition, he will be left behind like he is in most games now.

At a glance, those Brisbane players seem to be pretty early selections. I think that has something to do with it as well.

Read a puff piece on Facebook via the AFL website about Zac Bailey, something something "love Brisbane, but have family in Adelaide".

I don't know if we're any closer to knowing much. I'm hoping that this means he's gone... to us! Apparently Port is interested, too?

Might come down to who can offer the most. Port would want to have a good idea of Nas's intentions.

What I don't get and what no one seems clear on is how does Port match the Butters offer to force a trade and then have the offer on the table for Bailey.

Presumably it can't be the 'same money' if that makes sense.

Wouldn't go near Cripps. One of my least liked players.

He's a fake leader. All bluff and tough when it's going well, but disappears when it's not. He's one of their biggest issues. Zero defensive effort either.

Some absolute, Lions-fed garbage in that article.

“Brisbane's six-year offer to retain Bailey is understood to be financially less than Adelaide's, but the Lions have alluded to rival clubs that they would be capable of matching a rival free agency bid for the forward and forcing a trade.”

If they have the coin and are willing to spend it on him, why not offer him that much now? Pure spin.
