Easy to forget he's only played 40 games of AFL footy. Last year was essentially his first full season at the level after a couple of very injury interrupted years at the Suns.
Given Holllands is contracted but Blues want to move him on & we have a full list.

We could pick him up if the Blues picked up a player we delist to make room. Eg. Sholl. Ie. Effectively swap contracted players in needing of a fresh chance.

Well no, but i imagine we would be VERY wary of his issues
As we should be, but it shouldn't prevent this, get creative with the contract make sure its on our terms, hold him to account and make him work hard to redeem himself.

All that logic equally applied to Stengle

An AA selection and premiership later, we looked like fools and still do, with our culture focus still not providing a single finals win.

It needs to be tossed aside completely. The decision should be made on football only.
Nope, not all.

Given that we made a play for Wanganeen-Milera, we would have cap space to delist a contracted player if we want the list spot. Maybe in this draft we don't

Who'd be most vulnerable if we went down that path though?

Why use that cap space though unless there’s someone we really want?

Would much rather we keep that space to keep Michalanney, Draper & Rankine who come out of contract in the next two years, and potentially chase someone like Bailey or Sanders.

This is such a flawed mindset when it comes to player development.

1st-4th year players will not be consistent across an entire season. Their bodies are simply not conditioned to be able to withstand the rigours of playing against men for 18-23 weeks in a row at this point in their development.

If you think a player has the ability to be a best 23 player once they have developed, then they need to be given opportunities. It is a balancing act of not exposing players too early, but also giving them time to rise to the level. However, if you’re expectation is that they be one of the best players in the 2s consistently across the season so that IF an injury arises they are ready to go, then that is a completely unrealistic expectation.

We saw with Curtin this year, that he had some quiet games, but by backing him in, and allowing him the time to find his feet and adjust to the level, he got better and better. We also saw that he wasn’t able to maintain that level across an entire season. However, in 2-3 years time when he has fully matured, we’ll see the benefits of giving him games now. Curtin did not consistently dominate SANFL before getting his opportunity, as you seem to expect Edwards too.

We should be giving him opportunities when he’s in form, not demanding that he be in form when an injury happens.
This is a very well thought out post, Bravo I couldn't agree more

The max list size is 42 (senior + Cat A rookies), plus 0-2 Cat B rookies - hence 44. We will have a full roster of senior & Cat A rookies, but will be 1 short on the Cat B rookie list.

The eligibility rules for Cat B rookies are quite strict, making it relatively difficult to find eligible players worthy of listing. This is why few (if any) teams have a full roster of Cat B rookies.

In order to qualify for the Cat B rookie list, a player basically needs to be an International Player or not to have been registered or played in an Australian football competition for the previous 3 years. Borlase was born in Egypt and thus qualified under the International Player rule, Gallagher was born in Ireland, Cotton hadn't played in an Australian Rules competition for 3+ years.

We currently have 3x senior, 1x Cat A, and 1x Cat B vacancies on our team list.
Was it not that Borlase qualified for our academy because of his birthplace and we grabbed him as a Cat B (along with Newchurch) because they were undrafted academy players? Is this rule still in place?

Borlase was eligible for Cat B because he was born overseas (in Egypt), as was Gallagher (Ireland).

Greenwood & Cotton were eligible under the criterion about not having played Australian Rules football for 3+ years.

I don't think Newchurch was Cat B at all, from memory.
