Heard a rumour the Dogs are chasing Mathew Stokes pretty hard - (I actually just made that up just then)

Reasons while he'll fit in at the Bulldogs:
  • He's not too old and should be still around when we play finals next.
  • He's an unrestricted free agent.
  • Has polish, something rare in the Bulldogs team at the moment.
  • Geelong has plenty of players like him
  • Geelong has to give their young guys games or they may be targeted for poaching
  • Geelong surely can't pay him what we can
  • He's from Geelong which means you get an automatic contract at the Bulldogs
  • Has a drug record

When we get our vfl side next year, how many vfl listed players do we need to acquire?
I'd assume about 10 to cover for injuries and such but I don't actually know.
Essendon have 21; http://www.essendonfc.com.au/team/vfl/player-profiles

I would imagine we will try to keep the big body players we delist this year that are good influence that can help young guys like Markovic, Austin etc Hopefully we can steal some from other VFL clubs with promise to look at them as a future rookie chance and maybe get a few AFL delisted players and some that missed out at the draft.

Pretty strange really. Maybe Captain, but no idea how he would go as coach.
He'd be a superb coach. Understands the game very, very well. Gia in a coaching role, Cross in a captain/coaching role for the VFL team would be strong I reckon.

I'd say he would be a great forward line coach, just no idea how he would go as head coach (not saying he would be bad, just I'm not sure :p) but yeah having Cross and Gia down there would really really benefit the kids you'd think. Would be great.

For me I'd rather see Cross come straight in as a Fitness Coach working with the Senior Side, maybe even start him in the role in the last half a season he's playing

I'm hearing a few murmurs that Gia will be the coach of the VFL side next year...anyone else heard that?
Whether its with the dogs or elsewhere, my understanding is that he has been working towards his coaching accreditation for some time, with an eye to using coaching as a means to stay involved in the game long after the imminent end to his career.

In addition to what I said earlier about Scott West being in the mix for our VFL side you'd have to think this would be a smart move in more than one area. Get him down to Dogs training once a week to work with Wallis, Libba and Smith - literally can't think of a better mentor.

Gia has been doing coaching courses and what not for years hasn't he. I wouldn't be against him having first go at Coach of the VFL side.
Have no objection for him taking an assistants role initially, but with a completely new team, I think we should go with a coach who has senior experience at AFL or at least VFL level.
I also think Westy would be the ideal option. As DylanW suggested with so many young and developing mid fielders, a coach who was himself a mid fielder would be the ideal option perhaps.

I'd like to see the VFL side coached by someone recently retired from AFL with coaching aspirations and NOT someone from the WB or Geelong.

Someone to bring some new ideas that will complement and enhance those of the current coaching regime. Nothing against him but getting Gia is not bringing in anything new.

But we don't want new for the VFL side, do we? We want them to play the same as the AFL side, so the younger guys can learn their role properly, without getting moved around all the time.
