Anyone who wants Amartey and Butters are absolute fools. Perma mid table on the cards if you get that. Make our own grown make finals first while grabbing Ricky Pettard, Aaron Edwards, Grigg, Houli first. Not big tuna.

I reckon we have a massive player development problem. I'm loathe to say Cumberland, Sonsie, Stack, etc. were bad draftees so much as we failed to develop them properly. Hell Eggmolese-Smith got 2 brownlow votes out of 9 games... although admittedly we weren't so talent-starved back then.

The other thing missing from that list is that we should have had a few more bites of the cherry. Ryan, Colina, Lefau and Gibcus got generous re: contracts and extensions. Some of our players like Jack and now Prestia should have retired a year earlier. We might have found more players if we were giving more guys a go.
But we have the best VFL program in the state? Why do you think Walker sent his kids to us and not Carlton?

Good question, is it selection or development?
Throwing fresh draftees to the wolves in terms of having to play in a team composed of near cooked veterans, alongside kids who’ve played less than 20 games is a recipe for poor outcomes. You could argue that this falls under “development”, but I’d suggest it’s really neither selection or development, but environment.

And on our veterans, it’s so frustrating to see all of ours struggling with injury and/or form - even Vlas looks a shell of himself. Meanwhile other teams often seem to have theirs at the peak of their powers well into their 30’s.

Anyone who doesn't want Amartey is an absolute idiot.

He's a mature age key forward, who is at least a good decent player to take away the number 1 key defenders from Armstrong, Fawcett and Faul.

He will not even be a trade.

He's not the guy who gets us into contention for god sake, he's a guy who supports the youngsters.

Not much we got lucky in 16 getting caddy prestia Nank and rioli which all clubs didn't want and was dropping down the order but we got him cause of the name. The youth recruiting otherwise is the same.
It amazes me how a 65-year-old's contribution on here is thumbs down and what sort of life they have. Keep it up, champ. Your contributions will be remembered.

AFL has changed. IMO full rebuild will barely happen- it’s way too hard and the clubs know fans are impatient.

Full rebuilds exclusively through the draft are not happening because there are trading and free agency mechanisms available to clubs when they reach a certain point in the process.

The 3 teams who are currently in identifiable rebuilds, North, Eagles, Tigers all have a lot of high end young talent on their lists. They will all quite rightly reason they don't need more young talent, they need to start bringing in quality mature players as and when they can get them, because they are very tough to get.

If we start getting mature talent in this year, it is still part of a full rebuild. We will have still gone from a best 23 in 2024 to an almost entirely different one in say 2029. It's just that all our quality kids will be 3 or 4 year veterans by then. Bar a few players like probably Miller, Balta, Ross, our whole best 23 will have changed from the start of 2024 to the start of 2029. That is a full rebuild.

Don’t tell the brains trust around here that they berated Clarke as some turkey . Since he’s been there , they haven’t missed
While we traded Bolton for hotton / Faull
Rioli for smillie
You can’t make this stuff up
He’s not the recruiter there. He’s the list manager.

The guy that blew just about every first rounder he had with us.

Agree but was more implying in the future I think clubs won’t go down the full rebuild path.

There's no doubt we are at a critical point in history.
We have gone all in on the draft and early picks and we're hoping, wishing, praying that they all work out as there is not a lot else on the books (someone talking Ross, Balta and Miller being the only remnants of our best 23 in a few years time ... I'll just let that sink in).
Fate sadly has been pretty cruel to us, so there's an underlying scpeticism now that many of them won't realise their full potential or come close. And if they don't, we're in for another extended stay in the lower reaches.
I for one have never been seduced by seven picks in the top 28 in 2024 as being the panacea. History tells yui will never get all of them right ... or even close to right ... and sadly it's going that way.

I know I'm being a bit harsh on Ben Miller and MRJ, but I need to be confident they won't go the other way before putting a check next to their name. Feel free to do your own ratings.

Point is, this is ordinary. Not one star drafted in this period, and only Lynch was AA-worthy in a Richmond jumper from those we traded in. We can't use our draft pick position as an excuse if we then don't bring in quality players like Geelong and Sydney do. Keeping our picks is a list management decision in of itself.

Why does Blair Hartley still have a job with us after this? I don't get it. We give Matt Clarke crap for stuffing up our drafting, but why Blair Hartley goes under the radar is beyond me. His position should be thoroughly reviewed
I stoped reading when Miller at pick 63 didn’t get a tick.

They will in the right circumstances. I am sure what drove us to do it was the substantial under-valuation of draft picks versus mature players in the trade market coinciding with a super strong draft. So Rioli, Baker and Bolton netted us 5 really valuable picks, Smillie, Hotton, Faull, Trainor, and to make it easy, let's say Sims.

Other teams will be in this type of situation at times where it is simply better value to rebuild than pay overs for mature players in the market.

If you kept reading, then you’d know I acknowledge being harsh on him and MRJ. Miller really did make it for pick 63, but his start this year was very ordinary. He was a tick for me last year, but this year has me questioning him a bit

We have been extremely active in the draft (not entirely by choice) but have dropped the ball in the trade space which has left us with issues. We could have acquired a Mihocek type, a decent mid or two with some leg speed and a back up ruck, all for very low cost in the last 2 or 3 years, if we’d created list space by delisting some of our older types like Pickett, Kmac and Prestia at the right time. We still would have had ample experience but our list balance would have been much better and we’d still have the bulk of our premium drafted kids.

We have not been prepared to move players from our successful era on when their use by date has come. It has hurt us.
