Originally 38 players + 3 rookies
After List Lodgement One:
(38 players - 6 delistings/retirements + 2 recruited during trade week) + (3 rookies - 3 delistings)
= 34 players + 0 rookies currently on list
There are several configurations open to us on how we declare our list.
We can declare our veterans either inside or outside the list. If we do declare two veterans outside the list that would give us this configuration:
= 32 players + 2 veterans + 0 rookies
this would mean that we can recruit up to 6 players on the main list and that we must take 4 rookies.
If we declare just one veteran outside the list like so:
= 33 players + 1 veterans + 0 rookies
this configuration would mean that we can recruit up to 5 players on the main list and that we can take 4 or 5 rookies.

Despite having the two oldest players in the league, the Saints list is relatively inexperienced.
We only have 12 players on our list who have played in excess of 100 matches.
We now have 15 players on our list who have played less than 50 matches and 10 players who have played between 50 and 100 matches.
We will probably recruit one more mature aged player and 4 rookies.
It is unlikely that any of these will offer us great experience - so that would make 30 of our 42 players having played less than 100 matches.
Far from the window being closed, our squad isn't quite up to the experience level that would seem a requisite for being serious finals contenders. Our window of opportunity seems likely to aproach in 2008 - 10.

How many years can we expect our players have yet to play?
We have to draft for new players to fill exising players' roles about 4 - 5 years in advance of the existing player's retirement.
Looking at the above list - we are well placed for the next decade in most spots - but we need to look at coverring pending retirements of:
Robert Harvey
Andrew Thompson
Fraser Gehrig
Max Hudghton
Aaron Hamill
Brett Voss
These are important players, but not irreplacable.
Fraser Gehrig will be a major loss. His size, speed and strength means that he demands the oppositions best defender. Even without contributing on the field, he has already made it easier for the other forwards by taking the best defender away from them. Without him the structure of the opposition defence is strengthened. Can Fergus Watts demand the same respect? Can Barry Brooks?
Aaron Hamill would also be a major loss. Despite barely getting on the field, Aaron is still highly respected for his fierceness at the ball. He is an inspiration to the other players. He is a defensive forward, and this type of player will become more common in this new era. All forwards will be expected to have a bit of Aaron Hamill in them - tough, hard at the ball, hard at the man with the ball, hard shepperds protecting our ball carriers. Very few players naturally have a game like Aaron's and his leadership in showing how it is done will be invaluable in developing the next generation forwards.
Brett Voss is one of the most courageous players in the league. Only Max Hudghton could be considered superior in this quality. Both players are fantastic examples of putting the team ahead of the individual. Vossy has played a role as small/medium defender, and has also played up forward as an attacking player. Hudghton is the leagues best spoil. His pace is deceptive and he prides himself in making up the ground when others just couldn't make it. He is best served playing against a leading forward, but more than holds his own against tall marking forwards.
A book could be written on Robert Harvey's contribution to the game. He has shown that his class carries through despite his age. His evasive swivel hip, side step, carriage of the ball, his second and third efforts. Superlatives cannot do him justice. No-one can replace him, but we will need to fill the gap he leaves with a similar type.
Thompson is another whose ego has had to take second place, playing roles that benefit the team rather than making himself look good. His tagging and in and under work are invaluable.

Time will ultimately show that this has been a great draft for us.
The players we have picked up are first rate and I'm rapt that they redrafted Fergs. He'll prove his quality.
I was disappointed that we cannot draft to fill all 44 list spots.
We will draft at least 4 rookies and will probably take a pre-season draftee, but there was an opportunity in this "superdraft" to possibly take one or two more players. But it appears that we can not avail ourselves of this pick due to salary cap pressures.
Nevertheless we still have some additions to our list to come.
Who will we pick up in the pre-season draft?
I am hoping that we take a key defender type (like Perry).
If we recruit Matthew Clarke (@33yo - must be one season contract) then that suggests to me that RL wants to go all out for a premiership in 2007.
On the surface that is great news.
The added bonus of Clarke is that he may be groomed for a ruck coaching role (another former teammate of RL) and that could also be a good thing.
I have reservations though. I know that RL has come from a club which has made an art form of "alternative recruitment". Rather than recruit youngsters and have them develop through the system, Sydney has recruited ready-made players who were targetted for certain roles. This policy has been in place since before Roos was coach and has seen Sydney in the finals nearly every year for over a decade.
Our own recruiting process (since end 2000) has been successful in making us very competitive (but no cigar) for the last three years. This is a miniscule amount of time at the top compared to Sydney's. After 2000 where we turned over an enormous number of players, traded heavily and drafted the two best youngsters in the land (Roo and Kosi) we then went all out on the youth policy in 2001 and consolidated with recruiting fewer players the following years mainly the best available at our pick but also collecting more of the 2001 era recruits along the way (Brooks, Gram etc.).
The club had accumulated a great number of players around the same age group and kept them together. These kids became men and are now the core group of the club.
The consequence of this is that our subsequent recruiting has been minimal replacement with youth and we were starting to look a little thin on youth coming through. This is also a consequence of success (i.e. later draft picks).
This year we returned to youth (to a greater degree) and had one of the largest turnovers of personnel at the club since 2000 and 2001.

Still only three kids, the rest mature aged players. This is the mentality of topping up (which is what we should be doing) rather than rebuilding, but it does leave us somewhat deficient in youth coming through.

We have the spots available, but it appears as if the salary space is limited.
Rookie selections:
I am a believer in recruiting potential ruckmen and key defenders through the rookie system. Both player types often take a fair while to mature into the role and both areas need addressing.
(They need addressing now to replace Penny and Ackland, and for the future to replace Hudghton and Gardiner)
We would be best served by taking at least two kids as rookies in these roles and maybe we have a few more mature aged rookies to list.
I hope we take at least 5 rookies and invest in our future.

We will draft at least 4 rookies and will probably take a pre-season draftee, but there was an opportunity in this "superdraft" to possibly take one or two more players. But it appears that we can not avail ourselves of this pick due to salary cap pressures.
Nevertheless we still have some additions to our list to come.
Who will we pick up in the pre-season draft?
I am hoping that we take a key defender type (like Perry).
If we recruit Matthew Clarke (@33yo - must be one season contract) then that suggests to me that RL wants to go all out for a premiership in 2007.
On the surface that is great news.
The added bonus of Clarke is that he may be groomed for a ruck coaching role (another former teammate of RL) and that could also be a good thing.
I have reservations though. I know that RL has come from a club which has made an art form of "alternative recruitment". Rather than recruit youngsters and have them develop through the system, Sydney has recruited ready-made players who were targetted for certain roles. This policy has been in place since before Roos was coach and has seen Sydney in the finals nearly every year for over a decade.
Our own recruiting process (since end 2000) has been successful in making us very competitive (but no cigar) for the last three years. This is a miniscule amount of time at the top compared to Sydney's. After 2000 where we turned over an enormous number of players, traded heavily and drafted the two best youngsters in the land (Roo and Kosi) we then went all out on the youth policy in 2001 and consolidated with recruiting fewer players the following years mainly the best available at our pick but also collecting more of the 2001 era recruits along the way (Brooks, Gram etc.).
The club had accumulated a great number of players around the same age group and kept them together. These kids became men and are now the core group of the club.
The consequence of this is that our subsequent recruiting has been minimal replacement with youth and we were starting to look a little thin on youth coming through. This is also a consequence of success (i.e. later draft picks).
This year we returned to youth (to a greater degree) and had one of the largest turnovers of personnel at the club since 2000 and 2001.

Rookie selections:
I am a believer in recruiting potential ruckmen and key defenders through the rookie system. Both player types often take a fair while to mature into the role and both areas need addressing.
(They need addressing now to replace Penny and Ackland, and for the future to replace Hudghton and Gardiner)
We would be best served by taking at least two kids as rookies in these roles and maybe we have a few more mature aged rookies to list.
I hope we take at least 5 rookies and invest in our future.

■St Kilda has been cleared to participate in next week's pre-season draft after the AFL examined the club's total player payments.
St Kilda chief executive Archie Fraser confirmed last night, however, that the Saints were set to draft only one player, and would have a list of 38 with six rookies, instead of 40 with four rookie-list players. Ruckman Matthew Clarke is expected to be their pick.
The Saints could have a list of 40 if Robert Harvey and Max Hudghton were designated as veteran list players, but the club is instead opting to keep the duo "inside" the primary list of 38, a decision that allows it to draft more rookies.
