only gun forwards ? In the afl?

Port would happily take any one of roughhead , buddy , Cameron , Kennedy , Boyd on potential , tom lynch GC , McCarthy , Mccartin on potential , walker , Hawkins.

Of course we cannot get one of these guys.

But adding a guy who is unproven to play as a key forward at the age of 25 to our list of young key forwards isn't the way to solve our issue.
I think the real issue is, where does Ryder play. So far this year he has played well in Ruck at times but as forward his hands have been soft. Being a fan of big mason but injury has set him back. Butch is done as a forward, that only leaves the kids that are 2 years away yet. Harvey is the logical option atm.

You don't think you can do some of that by watching the magpies. I'm an advocate for rewarding form ahead of giving players games so the fans can make a call.
while i do generally agree, we dont have a lot of choice at the moment. Currently we are rewarding players that arent performing at AFL level too by not dropping them ie schulz. so who gets the game, the guy who is 30 and not performing, or the guy who is 21 and not performing? Im leaning in favour of thinking of the future right now, so its a case of whose next in line. that line for me stands at

Shaw
Harvey
redden
howard

butcher

If we lose this weekend ( we aren't), then we need to play the guys on the fringes to see if they are worthy of staying on the list. Then we don't have to rush back Bobby, Polec and White. Guys like Moore, Young, Butcher, Stewart, Mitchell, Harvey, Redden, Amon and Harvey can then all have a decent hit out.

Schulz has had some personal problems and will be ok. What worries me is after he retires. I like Shaw but injury has put him behind harvey atm.

I understand he had personal problems, but his form dip happened long before that incident with his wife

Schultzy has been a fantastic team man for us - I would definitely give him a one year contract on good pay with an option of another year. I hope Port are penny pinching with him. Hearing that we are at the limit of our salary cap worries me - could be a few highly paid/underperformers me thinks.

although Gold Coast wouldn't admit it I reckon Charlie Dixon is gettable for the right deal, when trade season starts and you offer Gold Coast a big enough carrot I think they would be willing to trade him out. The Question is what would you offer, maybe our 1st round and a guy like Moore (but I don't think they would be looking for average midfielders), would you consider trading Carlile out for a guy like Dixon?. Carlile is a good player and doesn't deserve to be traded but if you need a big forward you have to ask yourself the question who is more expendable, would you rather go with a team of Trengove Hombsch Clurey (as your defensive trio) with Dixon up forward or would you rather stay with what we have, with most probably Clurey missing out on a game and having Schulz as your main forward.

I think one of the highly paid under performers might be butcher, he wouldn't be on huge money but we definitely paid overs with his last contract to keep him.

Lol carlile for Dixon ? No way.

Dixon hasn't completed one full season of afl with out his ankles breaking down. Who ever gets Dixon might be lucky to get 50 games out of him before he retires.

No matter what, the facts are that Jay is very near the end of his footy career and has given our club great service. We have to look to the future but we have a gap between Jay and the next best forward on our list, so we might have to look outside of Alberton for the time being until the the young talent we have are ready to play on the big stage.

Don't really remember Craig bird much but isn't he pretty vanilla? Like a guy who doesn't have any standout attributes but does everything just ok?

I reckon a no from me. He must be around 25. We don't need midfield depth , and we already have a midfield of wines , gray , boak , wingard , Ebert , hartlett , Polec with ahchee and amon stepping up this year , Impey , broadbent and pittard can rotate through there , with the hoon and krak also capable of going through the middle. Also we have Moore and young trying to establish themselves but struggling to get a decent crack much less a run of games in that midfield.

So for me unless a mid has the chance to be a top three or four midfielder in that group why bother if they are around the same age? Unless they would be our second best in and under player or second best kick in the midfield. If his run and spread is good Hinkley may like him and he may be an upgrade on Mitchell , but I have no real interest in improving the 40th spot on our list.

Sydney are likely to offload Craig Baird for next to nothing at the end of the year. He can play a role.
Yep he is a natural tagger which we dont have now Kane is gone. Has been thru the Sydney hard arse system so that's another plus. His old man played for Port in the 1970's, pretty sure he only played underage and reserves footy.

Craig grew up as a Port supporter, played at Port Stephens Nelson Bay, about 30 minutes north of Newcastle, was twice all Oz U/18, wanted to be drafted by Port - pretty sure it was Emma Quayle who wrote a really good long article about him. Because he was born in January we couldnt draft him in the national draft, but Sydney pounced and got him under the NSW scholarship system, as the restrictive nature of how much time he could spend with Port meant he would spend little time with Port in that year and it made sense to sign with Sydney than Port.
