Sydney are likely to offload Craig Baird for next to nothing at the end of the year. He can play a role.
Keen. He'd be an excellent Cornes replacement in the tagging role. Doesn't get as much outside ball as Kane did, but he balances that out by being better than Kane at getting the inside ball.

If we go for Craig Bird I'd want us to offer no more than a player outside our 22 and a third round pick. This draft is not meant to be very deep but the top 12, and we should get a pick there, will be passable and a lot of them will be big guys. I'm sick of not being in the first round and if we do it once more it's going to come back to bite us.

Yep he is a natural tagger which we dont have now Kane is gone. Has been thru the Sydney hard arse system so that's another plus. His old man played for Port in the 1970's, pretty sure he only played underage and reserves footy.

Craig grew up as a Port supporter, played at Port Stephens, about 30 minutes north of Newcastle, was twice all Oz U/18, wanted to be drafted by Port - pretty sure it was Emma Quayle who wrote a really good long article about him. Because he was born in January we couldnt draft him in the national draft, but Sydney pounced and got him under the NSW scholarship system, as the restrictive nature of how much time he could spend with Port meant he would spend little time with Port in that year and it made sense to sign with Sydney than Port.
Please corner a Port official at your next convenience (not for this first time!) and relay this information.

Why add a pick if he's not in their best 22.

Good point, but somehow I feel we will offer a bit more than we should. Whether it is that Port has a bit of an inferiority complex in trades or the other teams don't rate Port, we always seem to offer overs to get players from other teams. Angus Monfries and Damien Hardwick were exceptions, Monfries because he was a free agent and trading was better for both parties and Hardwick because Essendon needed to get rid of some players to reduce salary cap pressure.

He is in their best 22 IMO, and he'd certainly walk into ours. I'm baffled by the fact that they're not playing him, he seems to be this year's Tom Mitchell. Give me Craig Bird over the likes of Harry Cunningham, Daniel Robinson and Dean Towers every day of the week.

I think that's the answer - they want to give a younger Tom Mitchell a go, who gets more of the ball than Bird. Plus Bird had an average finals series last year.

Sydney have to give Tom Mitchell a go or he will look for other opportunities. They also need to fit Heeney into their stacked midfield. At the end of the year they need draft picks to bid for more midfielders Mills and maybe Dunkley and because of the COLA allowance being wound back they need salary cap room. There's no rumour, but it is very likely that Sydney and Bird would be happy to part ways at the end of the year. It is pointless having a good player on your list when when they have no role at the moment or in the future. I can see a trade of something like a swap of third rounders plus our fourth?

List of 2016 free agents. Craig Bird is among them and a few others from Sydney. Although Brandon Jack is not there he may be a DFA due to no or little opportunities. Some of these will in no way move on.

That means we cant pick him up for nothing until October 2016 - bummer. If you look at the list in the middle of this page you will see the list of the names of players who are free agents in 2015 and who could still be free in September/October.
