How on earth is Bird not getting a run with Sydney? Staggering.
We seem to only be playing a certain number of "inside" players. Last year Mitchell couldn't get a run, but Bird was in. This year Mitchell has gone past him. Neither are going to go past Kennedy, Jack or Parker. So it seems we really just can't fit him in. He's not blessed with terrific pace, so guys like Cunnungham, Towers, Lloyd etc are all getting games. Really, he is just in that unlucky place where we have a surplus of his type of player.

Could see a few teams chasing him. Carlton, Melbourne, and even GC could use a hard working inside mid who can do a good job as a run-with player. We might get a second rounder for him. if he goes.

We are probably just laying the groundwork for a possible move next year. Speak to Mayes , let him know where we see him and speak to Brisbane and they know we will come back next season when it's more likely we have a shot. But I would love to have Mayes.

As I've said , we have a team at the moment that relies on how we play to a structure or plan to win. And part of that is how teams let us play our plan. We are reliant on a fair bit that is not entirely in our control.

Recruit guys who can win the contested ball , take a contested mark and hit targets by foot under pressure. If you do then you become less reliant on a plan unfolding as you want it and just be better at football than the other guy.

Mayes does two of those things really well. I would happily ship our first and second for Mayes and brisbanes early 3rd. But probably they say no and we try again next year. Have to admit I haven't watched much of Mayes lately but a bit as a junior when he played for North and was really impressed.

if we end up with around pick 10 this year, it may be enough to get mayes. he hasnt been good this year by all accounts. Toumpas would be about a second rounder based on what he has become, but they prob wouldnt want to let him go so cheap, might need some steak knives. one or our hight draft picks that arent cutting it either...moore..butcher?

Would be happy with Bird and/or Mayes but I am not sure what role they would play. We have a couple of half forward/midfield types and I can't see Bird pushing past Boak, Wines, Gray, Ebert or Hartlett.

I wouldn't be giving better than a third round for Bird and Brisbane would want similar to what Polec cost us for Mayes.

This year has exposed our lack of depth for outside run and we have struggled with our kicking. A lot of that will come good with Polec and White returning from injury, Amon getting more experience and Pittard getting back to his early year form. However, this is certainly an area where we could use another pacey mid with a good kick. Either you draft someone, and there are a couple of options, or we trade for someone undervalued like White/Polec.

Motlop, Mayes, Toumpas, Aish, Bennell - all fit the bill but would cost a fair bit.

Brad McKenzie from North is one who has a good kick and agility, but as someone mentioned struggles to find it. Maybe could be picked up on the cheap. Similar to Kavanagh.

We don't trade our first pick for someone like Mayes. I like him a lot, but if we have a pick around 10, we need to keep the age profile churning over and get someone of his quality in the draft.

He's still just as unknown this early in his career as those in the draft are.

At pick 10 and we want outside run Wayne Milera was pretty useful with 34 disposals and two goals at U18 level for Centrals on the weekend. I like Mayes as well but a first round pick on this year's form as a price then the club would need to know something we don't?

Bird would be an excellent fit now that Cornes has retired.

How on earth is Bird not getting a run with Sydney? Staggering.
Harsh, but simply Kennedy, Parker, Jack and Mitchell makes for a very impressive quarter of inside midfielders. Lloyd has stepped in and proved he is no mug immediately too. Then there's Heeney.

Guys like Cunningham, Robinson and Towers aren't better footballers but simply offer up more ability to play non-midfield roles.

Could be a pick up for excellent value, but then again, one injury and he's back in a highly performing 22 which will very likely be there deep in September so it will be interesting to see how it all plays out.
