why wouldnt mayes be worth a pick 10? he was a higher pick and has shown that he will be worthy of that pick. we really to overglamourise the draft somewhat. I wouldnt give up a pick 10 for motlop though, second round would do, doubt they would think so though.

I'm not really seeing people here over value draft picks although in general clubs do hold onto their draft picks quite rigorously and are nervous about risking trades. I for one would do our first for Mayes in a heartbeat , but appreciate others may not. Others would be stoked to get bird , I'm luke-warm on that. Differing opinions is alright.

There is nothing wrong in valuing draft picks , as alone any draft pick could be a hit or miss. But in order to get that hit you have to have a ticket to the show so to speak. And you need to go to the show several times before your number comes up. So you have to be prepared to pick the talent , try to develop it , and go back and try it again until it works. You just never know which one will work though.

yer im staggered at how high people people value draft pics. Mayes is a known quantity, proven performer. Vs an unknown could be a bust could be good could be a superstar pick
As the ability of clubs to pick genuine talent has improved over the years, the perceived value of draft picks has also increased. You're much more likely to get a 100+ game player with a top 20 pick these days than you were 10-15 years ago.

It's a different economy to trading pick 4 for Wakelin.

Would be pretty good if Wines, Toumpas and Mayes from that draft all ended up at Port.
Adding one 'likely' and one 'high risk/high return' type to our list is a fair enough idea.

Mayes looks like he's going to make it. Jimmy doesn't look like a straight swap for Moore or Young (not on field or in terms of trade value) but he may start out here as a "readier" backup for Polec/White/Hartlett than Amon. If the club has seen enough to think Ah Chee is that next, extra inside mid we wanted Young, Moore (or Newton before them) to become, we might make a play for Jimmy.

Anyway turning 2012 into a "great" draft year for us (albeit retrospectively!) would make up a bit for the fairly 'below average' output so far from our 2009 crop :/

This is the same Sam Mayes who's been in and out of the 22 of the bottom team and near-certain wooden spooners, right?

Pole Cat and Mayes are very different. Polec has a real point of difference. No one talks about the delivery by foot of Mayes and we knew Polec was quick. Mayes looked ok last year and could be a really good pick up but we are possibly talking pick 10. Mayes has shown nothing even last year that would make him more interesting than possibly Partington, Ah Chee, Milera or someone rated in the top eight who could slide. 10 is a seriously good pick. Pick 15, yeah why not but 10 is a good pick Nah we keep it this year.

I'd be saving my first kick for a key forward , that's one spot we have our own " unknowns " Harvey , Shaw , Butcher , Frampton , Dougal , you'd think one of them would have seriously put their hand up this year .
Probably try Harvey sometime soon to get a feel for his worth .

Their first pick is too high for either as it will be a pick around 1-4. They could trade that one high pick for two picks then use them to get Carlisle and aish. God knows why players would want to go there.

They don't have a lot of tradable assets that they would happily part with. If Henderson does ask to go to Geelong then that gets them one of aish or Carlisle ..

The reason that Toumpas, Mayes, Aish, etc may be attainable is that they have had some struggles and aren't completely proven. They are all talented and there was a reason they were high picks. Right now they would be that 20th to 25th player but would be the Boak/Ebert/Gray types in 3-5 years time. Hawthorn are often happy to trade picks as long as they are bringing in talent. No reason we shouldn't back ourselves to do the same.

Whilst we need a ready to go KPF you usually have to develop or trade for them. Drafting Weidman/Curnow/Burton with our first pick won't pay off for 3-5 years, that's if those players are available to us. There will be draftable KPPs next year too. So why not use that first pick in a trade?

I think it may be a possibility both Burton if he is completely sound and Curnow (who the Bombers board are very keen on) will play good football next year it wouldn't be a 3 year wait to see a return on investment. Just the possibility Burton could slide means that we hold on to our first round pick if it's 10. If it blows out to 12 plus then ok whatever.

Like to see us use our first pick on Mackay rather than trade. At this stage it is not obvious that any of our young KP players will make it so need more depth IMO. Have hopes for the latest 3 though but doubtful about Harvey or Shaw

I'm happy if we go to draft or use the pick on a young player who will help us. As long as we aren't bringing in other teams spuds or list cloggers and hoping they suddenly become good.

We have several immediate needs , any of which we can address.

Inside mid
Key forward
Footskills

And we have options for all of them. Key forward isn't going to come in a trade though. There will be no good ones available , and if there were freo would be there offering a million dollars and all their draft picks and young talent.
