I am keen to establish to team list sizes in the 1980s and 1990s.

My understanding is that list sizes came into effect in 1987, to complement the draft introduced in late 1986.

The more recent CBA agreements are available here: http://www.footyindustry.com/?page_id=4537

.... but only the post-2000 CBAs specify list size.

I have determined so far that the maximum number of players on the primary list were:
1999-2000: 40
2001-12: 38
2013- : 40

What were the maximum number of players on the primary lists 1987-1998?

Thanks.

I don't have an answer for your main question, but offer the links below as an update for your history of the draft information.

The first national drafts occurred in 1981 and 1982 (a fact ignored by the AFL History and Publication sections)
