AFL close to list size cuts as end of trades looms

AFL club lists sizes will be cut to a minimum of 37 and a maximum of 44 players - including all rookies – next year.

The maximum number of primary listed players on club lists will drop to between 36 and 38 down from 38 to 40 now.

Under the plan for next year that primary list figure has now been cut by two - to a maximum of 38 primary list players - and clubs can have up to a maximum of six rookies (four category A rookies and two category B rookies) for a total maximum of 44 players.

A club next year could have as few as 36 primary listed players but then they must also have at least one rookie – to get to the overall minimum figure of 37 players.

we have so many players on the list that aren’t going to make it. guys like rantall Bianco and Ruscoe aren’t top end talent crap picks at the end of draft. That’s the list managers fault.

You’ve got Howe twice that’s how bad you are searching for players.

Maybe Howe is twice as good?

I’d give Appleby another year now that scharenberg (and maybe Langdon still) is gone. Can play either end.

Lynch is not needed. Wills is also surplus.

This is how the list stands at present.

Note following for 2020 contracts:
Cox believed has extended to 2021 from trigger clause.
Greenwood i understand has been offered 1 year extension, but no public announcement
JDG believed to have been re-signed. Details unknown.
Mihocek believe has been offered a 3 year extension. Ned Guy let this slip on trade radio approx 10 days ago. Again no public announcement from CFC.



So that makes 38 on our list before any more deletions.
As AFL indicated clubs one have take 1 player in draft this year, we maybe only taking Reef + one other which will mean 2 more deletions.
Anyone know how long Appleby, Tohill, Madgen & Keane have been rookies??

Just saying picks 40 + you a scraping the barrel. Usually you have those on list as Hope now they are more on the list as an expectation.

You haven't got Beams in the senior list unless you know something that no-one else does in that a settlement has been reached. Think for time being think you should account for Dayne. I have (see post above this)

There's been confusion regarding Tohill and Keane since their recruitment. Despite multiple sources stating both are category b rookies under AFL rules (see below) only one can be a Cat B rookie. Beams has announced his retirement, whether it's like Voss and we carry him for a year on our list remains to be seen. If we do it's likely to be as a rookie, so we can save a little bit of cap space. Much like how we've previously moved contracted players onto the rookie list instead of delisting them outright.

The typo has been fixed and I'm made a note regarding Beams.

(b) In addition to maintaining the maximum number of allowable Category A Rookie Players on their Rookie List under Rule 10.1, each Club may include a maximum of three (3) extra Players on its Rookie List provided those Players are:

(i) former Scholarship List Players at that Club who have been nominated under Rule 12.5 or 12.9;​

(ii) former International Scholarship List Players at that Club who have been nominated under Rule 13.5 or 13.8;​

​

(iii) former Club Academy players at that Club who have been nominated under Rule 0;​

​

(iv) International Players with the exception of Players who, subject to Rule 10.1(c), are Irish citizens or who have, in the opinion of the AFL, lived for a substantial period of time in Ireland prior to inclusion on the Rookie List;​

While Beams has "announced" his retirement there's been no word (as far as I know) that he's longer our senior list. Friday might tell us a little more when the first list lodgment is done. Until we get official word from either CFC or AFL think he should remain on the list.
Re Tohill and Keane yeah seems only 1 can be classed as a Cat B. Do you have evidence that Keane is one the one who is classed as a Cat A or was this just an educated guess??

I've done some research overnight and believe that Madgen/Appleby & Mihocek all must be upgraded to senior list if we retained them on our list as their 3 years is up.
