Well, the Sham Merger have done it again, a regulation finals shellacking in Melbourne. If they were a truly merged side, then a Melbourne final would pose no fear, as it would also be considered a home final to those pathetic Bears who claim it was a real merger.
Facts are, Brisbane, an Interstae club, lost an AWAY final in Melbourne. They are NOT Fitzroy & never will be. As I've previously stated, here's more reasons on why it really was a sham merger:

Where do the Lions train - Brisbane.
How many 1996 Lions are in the current team -2 or 3?!
How many HOME games in Melbourne do they play - F@#% All!
When Fitzroy played their last game, there was a farewell to the club at the end of the match. There was no farewell to the Bears. Fitzroy no longer exist, they might as well move their Melbourne based social club to a cemetary.
They sposor some junior sides in Melbourne, so what, ALL AFL teams do that.
The only reason Brisbane took the Fitzroy colours is because they are marketable, unlike those absolutely disgusting Bears jumpers. Just admit it, Noel Gordon went to bed with the AFL & took the AFL's money to pay Fitzroy's debt. Then just like an eagle swooping over a dead animal, the Bears picked the best bits out of the Fitzroy carcass! I don't think that qualifies as a merger.
Come on all you Bears, defend yourselves with the usual crap about Fitzroy honour boards at the Gabba & a revised club song. Just keep throwing up that irrelevent shit to the poor old Roy fans! Your are Bears in a Fitzroy jumper. Back to Cararra you Bears.

They are Brisbane Bears, not Fitzroy. Everyone talks about the Lions not winning a final in Melbourne, but this is not true. Fitzroy Lions won numerous finals in Melbourne throughout their history. Well Red Devil, I'm a Royboy from way back and a current member of Coburg-Fitzroy as well. I don't believe the merger was a sham marriage, certainly it's little different to the Coburg-Fitzroy arrangement. All you've done here is repeated your crappy arguments from another thread to which I replied, refuting each and every one of them. Why don't you answer those? The reason is of course that you can't.

As for you Woof, I'm STILL waiting for your reasons as to why the merger is a sham marriage and given you my reasons why it isn't. I've asked you four or five times now in various threads and still no answer, apart from posting more crap. Afraid to show your ignorance I suppose. If you think the Lions are supposedly really the Bears tell us HOW that is so?

The Brisbane Lions were beaten fair and square on Saturday and on what I saw even the presence of Bradshaw and Power (who have kicked 108 goals between them this year) wouldn't have been enough, although I think the margin would have been closer. Carlton clearly were the better team and deserved to win. The Lions didn't choke, just as the Bulldogs didn't choke. The bottom line was that both sides just weren't good enough.

Still waiting Red Devil, for you to tell me how my replies (on another thread) to your arguments above (and on that thread as well) are flawed. Would you like me to repeat them here? I wouldn't say those arguments I presented are particularly passionate either, just logical and truthful. Brisbane's made a lot of mistakes in handling the merger, that I will be the first to concede, but they've done enough successful things re Fitzroy to suggest that it is not a 'sham marriage'. I await with bated breath, your answers to my arguments.

The Bears didn't steal my club either, it was the AFL clubs who made the choice between the Brisbane offer and the North Melbourne offer.
It was the AFL clubs that decided that Fitzroy should merge with Brisbane, not the AFL commission or the Bears. 13 of the 15 clubs voted for Brisbane, except for North who voted against and Fitzroy, who abstained. Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon, Footscray, Geelong, Hawthorn, Melbourne, Richmond, and St Kilda, all VICTORIAN clubs voted FOR Fitzroy's merger with Brisbane. It amuses me when Victorian supporters, such as Red Devil and Woof get all sanctimonius about the brutality of Brisbane in sucking the life of Fitzroy. Unless you supported North or Fitzroy, your club was partly responsible for that occurring in the first place. Footscray added their 'support' shortly after by suing us! Yet Woof, who presumably supports the Dogs, gets on here preaching about how bad Brisbane is and how they r*ped Fitzroy. Take a good, long, hard look at the actions of your own club in the merger debacle, Woof and its role in bringing about the merger with Brisbane, before you start criticising Brisbane for what you think they did.

I for one, as a member of the former club "Brisbane Bears" felt the loss as well. We as members, never asked for a merger. We heard about it, and then heard there was nothing going to happen, much to our relief!

Then suddenly out of the blue, 2 - 3 months later, over dinner in the social club on July 4th, 1996, the Duty Manager came shuffling, table to table of those patrons he knew. He said to my family "we have just merged with Fitzroy, they (N Gordon and Co.) just rang from Melbourne and told us".

Stuff me, a state of shock, hit the whole joint!!! An hour later a player or 2 left downstairs after training, that was there to hear the news, emerged up into the social club - CRYING!!

You lot might not give us lot up in Qld much credit for football passion, but you also don't have the facts. You don't have any media reports of what is going on up here from a first hand view. We may have made major inroads in gaining a profile for AFL up here, but it is still (much to my disgust) a predominately Rugby League State. A Lions record win, still takes 2nd fiddle to a Broncos mediocre loss in the tv and print media. We strive to keep our passion alive. And ill-informed idiots do nothing to help our cause!

As for 'Woof' - put up or shut up idiot! Sure we lost. And we lost in a bad way. And we managed to do it in the same inconsistant way we have ALL year. Had it been a Vic team that had performed the way we did all year, with all the rumour and innuendo, the in-consistancy, the player disharmony, You lot would have been questioning WHY it was still going on! Who is responisble!!! Why is it still happening!! Whose head will roll for this!!!

And as for Footscray sueing over the Western Oval contract. Just chalk that up to dumb luck. The Club voted with the rest to support the merger. Had the merger not happened, and Fitzroy Football Club survived on it's own (regardless of the business registered entity that still exists), the proverbial boot would have been on the other foot. Imagine how much they could have sued for after the AFL decided that the Western Oval wasn't fit to play AFL fixtures on! Think yourself simply lucky!
