Hi guys, first timw poster around here.

Absolutely love AFL dream team comps.

Last year my family filled 16 teams and we ran out comp on Herald Sun supercoach, great fun.

The only thing I didnt like was playing teams that had almost the exact same players as mine and things like have the same captain etc.

I would love to see a live draft introduced so you are the only one that has that player in your comp - so all your 16 teams (coaches) log on same time prior to 2008 season and create their team for the year, a live draft.

I believe the yanks to this for their crappy sports but I'd like it for ours.

what are your thoughts?

I run a private comp that does this. Some things to note:

* It takes a LOT of time. We run our drafting from very late December through to late Jan/early Feb. (although we use a squad approach, so have to choose 36 players)

* You need sufficient players/coach. So with 30 players in the team, you probably wouldn't want 16 coachs, but more like 10.

* How would the DT trades work? We just have a mid-season draft/trade period (like DT use to). But being able to trade at will (up to 2 players/week) would make this a bit of a nightmare.

But if you really want to, you can probably get around all this. But you'd effectively have to have a competition administrator, and put all trades/picks through him. He could then say if someone's already traded for that player, and make the actual trades/picks.

Cheers lads.

Ants, did you run that idea then take your draft selections/team to DT online so they can generate your scores each week?

I just dont have the time to calculate the scores manually but love the idea.

Well, what I do is cut and paste each team's stats from the AFL site into Excel workbook, one under the other. I then copy those (which are HTML) from that workbook into a workbook I've set up as "values only". That workbook then automatically calculates each players scores, and using another workbook (yes, another :) ) which has vlookup functions and each coach's team you get who win/loses each week. The entire process probably takes 10 minutes.

In fact the longer bit is when everyone submits their teams, tehy usually screw up things like players names which I have to go and fix.

If people really want my workbooks I suppose I could send them if you want to PM me. I'm currently setting them up to hand over to a friend since I'll be in the UK for a year, so he's running the comp.

see the yahoo fantasy sports, would be quite easy once they have the software, which is already available.

all you have to do is input the stats weekly, which they are doing anyway.

and the yahoo trades are automated, so its pretty simple. the league is able to vote on weather a trade is fair or not, so you cant bribe the bottom place team to give you judd for mcmahon.

you could def do it with 16 teams. if you do it with 10, it would be too easy to get a decent team, like now. people would be rewarded for knowledge/hard work

Mind posting a link?

As to the 10 vs 16 coaches, you want a good team. Thats what makes it fun. The very fact each player is only selected once will dilute most of the bargains you see in the dreamteams anyway.

http://sports.yahoo.com/fantasy

i play NHL, MLB and NBA

it is a bit harder, but really rewards people who keep up to date, and those who really know their stuff. especially american sports when there is always a new hot pitcher, goalie, young gun elevated from the minors...

And it is a full on commitment. with 162 mlb games a year, and 82 hockey and a similar amount of NBA, you really need to check your team daily for injuries, updates and to set your starting lineup

But if can spend your day trawling forums like me @ work, then you can spend a few minutes every day working on your team

cheers bert.

is it any good mate? any glitches in the system etc.?

scoring the same as DT/Supercoach?
Its a great game, but be prepared for a dream team experience that isn't like the regular DT/SC comps.

Ten teams (I think you can specify more or less when you set up a comp) picks a certain number of players for their squad via a draft system.

Each week you then pick three forwards, three mids, a ruckman and a tackler from your squad (plus an emergency). Each of those positions only scores for specific stats - forwards only score for goals and behinds for example, while ruckmen only score for hitouts and marks. It's quite unique.

Having said that, it looks like they will be running a "regular" style comp in 08 too, though I'm not sure how it will turn out. But it's easily my favourite fantasy footy game because it relies more on knowledge and skill rather than luck.

Hope that helps. :)

Sco, TheBench has been running over 4 years (this is the fifth) so the system is pretty solid.

We just deployed the new 2008 version last night so you might want to go and check it out.

The Draft Process is fully automated. Email is sent to each coach when it is their turn to pick. You can set timeouts to make sure a coach doesn't sit of their pick for too long and Coaches can set up Draft pick priorities in advance - all to keep the draft moving forward.

Logistically there is no admin, everything is automated - you just need to find a bunch of mates.

To answer another question, coaches can trade between other coaches (including multi-way trades) up to a round you can define. Coaches can delist and re-draft only a limited number of times - again you define.

Hope this all helps, send us an email from the Contact us section of the site if you need any more info...

Fantasyfooty.net.au is what you are after the best AFL fantasy footy on the internet. It is just what you are after live draft and the exact same scoring as the DT scoring. You can have leagues of 4-16 teams the only downfall is it cost money but only $20 for the league for the whole year so a gold coin for each team but trust me i.ve done it the last 2 years and by far the best fantasy comp you can get.

Guys the bench is the way to go.

I started playing dream team in 04 and loved it and still do. However last year I joined up something new called "thebench.com.au" it turned out to be a fantastic game with some massive advantages which the dream teams has always lacked.

The main advantage is the online draft.. we have 14 teams this year (16 last year) and we get a group of mates together and have the draft run for a few weeks - depending on how active coaches are on the internet. The Bench allows you to be able to pick a player without everyone else ending up with similar squads. For example I had second pick in the draft and picked up Johnno Brown - meaning no one else can get him! Its a great game and id recommend it over dream team now.

this game is going to be massive! get on it!
