Matthew Lloyd will undergo surgery on Monday to repair a hamstring injury that has almost certainly brought his 2006 season to an end. Scans have revealed a hamstring tendon has been torn away from the bone after he crashed the ground following a marking contest against the Bulldogs last Sunday.

"The scans show that he has partially torn the tendon at the top of the hamstring and it has come away from the bone. He will need surgery to stitch the tendon back up," Essendon club doctor Bruce Reid said today. "His rehabilitation could take between four and six months so it is obviously season-threatening."

"But it is not career-threatening. We have seen players come back from this type of injury in the past. Stephen Silvagni totally ruptured the hamstring tendon and returned to play the next season so it will not threaten his career."

The injury is a bitter blow for Lloyd and the Bombers in what is his first season as captain. Lloyd has started the season in spectacular fashion kicking eight goals in the season opener against Sydney.

Who would you put in Lloyd's position...up in full forward?
