Excellent captaincy last night Matthew well done.

He was great there is nothing much else you could say about his game last night. Well done Matty.:thumbsu:
There is still a lot of love for Lloydy judging by how much the crowd went off when he took that mark and kicekd the goal.It was good to be there and see it and be a part of it.

I hope they got a good replay for the big screen. Ch7 showed it from about 5 different angles - they all looked awesome.

Geez it must've been good to get the vocal cords going after the siren again!

Yes, Lloyd was fantastic, but it was only one game!

Topic says it all..
needs to be consistent or otherwise the critics are going to be on his back again.
fantastic to see some emotion from him as well after he took the hanger and kicked the goal.
well done matty

Re: Yes, Lloyd was fantastic, but it was only one game!

I think he has found a new role in the team where he will get a lot of the ball and set up many goals. He might kick a couple while doing so.

Re: Yes, Lloyd was fantastic, but it was only one game!

He has to start somewhere. He hasn't been that bad for that long but unfortunately as ff he needs to kick goals. If he doesn't he hasn't done his job.

Structure wise last night, Neagle and Lucas deep with Lloyd up the ground worked pretty damn well...and he hit a target with his right boot :D

was amazing mate, ive never seen the essendon supporters jump and down that much since sir james' goal back in 2004, and then he slotted it, was brilliant

Gee that mark was sensational live at the game. And what i loved most was how the entire crowd stood up and aplauded and made that roar when he kicked that goal. Then Lloydy showd that rare moment of emotion, it just brought a smile to my face and i was just wrapped to see him have a good game and answer his critics. Also worked very well having him and Scotty up at around the 50 with Neagle in the square, lets hope he can continue his form next week:thumbsu:

Glad to say not for one second did I write Lloydy off or say he was on the way out.

Merv I believe he is a magnificint captain only small issue was perhaps a little far away in the goal square. That has changed now and he is roaming around and playing everywhere. There is no other reason he shouldn't be cpatain.

His game last night particularly his chasing and tackling at 100 miles per hour brought a chill to me. All the crap written about here and in the papers about him I now think is a good thing because CHAMPIONS then show the world why they are champions. The reaction of the players towards him after the game shows me they respect him immensely and they were rapt with the way he came out and stuck it up everyone. All of our senior players didn't just shake his hand or pat him on the back they all gave him a huge hug.

Well done LLOYDY - Thats what why we come to the football.

He is an average captain currently, yes.

I didn't say you can only be a good captain if you are an onballer but it's very obvious that you get far more chances to exert your influence and lead by example if you are constantly in the play, rather than having limited opportunities, waiting for the ball to get into your zone, which we do less than any other team.

I would have thought the wrong stage of career is very obvious and needs no explanation.

Because it has rarely, if ever, been a topic of discussion on our board when we are winning.

There is no doubt that Lloyd brings some good qualities to the job also and that we are very short of leaders but imo, we would be better served by either Hille or McVeigh, especially Hille.

Do you think there could also be some flow on effect for Hille if he is recognized as having had a good year, assuming he still does, and is rewarded for his efforts and we show confidence in him.
He could possibly be our captain when we next seriously make a finals bid, Lloyd won't be.

Lloyd can also concentrate on his game solely and hopefully improve his form because of that.

Conversely if he doesn't agree with the decision and decides to retire or sulks, which i am not saying he will, then is he a good captain?

If you were live at the game last night I think you will be man enough to retract everything you have said about him being no good as captain. He was absolutely sensational.

Definitely played well last night.

I also have never written him off but have stated that he is in the wrong position for a captain.

So with him playing up the ground last night he was able to have an influence and lead from the front.

It's also just 1 game...

Of course my suggestion for his successor wasn't too shabby and was BOG and also led well while playing on the best Ruckman, while obviously not fully fit, in the league.

Great to see the crowd get behind him and even better to see the genuine elation on the players faces when Lloyd kicked goals or took marks.

Where did i say he was "no good" as captain?

Not a lot to take back TD.

I said he was an average captain currently, at time of posting, played in the wrong position for a captain at the wrong stage of his career.

The main reason he played well and could lead from the front was because he wasn't anchored in the goal square and could get into the play.

I have never bagged out Lloyd, like many others.

I think Neagle being in the side is integral to Lloyd having the influence he did last night... Gives him a greater license to crash packs around half forward while Neagle plays deep.

Spot on. Why does the captain need to be bagged heavily in the media to find inspiration to stand up and lead the side. Everything was up 100% from the previous week, possesions, tackles, intensity. Surely the captain of the side should find it in himself to do that every week.

Its good to know that Lloyd can play up the ground, so we can have Lucas, Lloyd, Neagle and Gumbleton in at once and realease McPhee to half back where he plays his best footy. Lucas is returning to top form and Neagle looks good. We are in with a good chance next week.

The reason Lloyd was better was because he worked harder both ways and did the 1%ers. Really happy for him and glad to see him show some emotion - he needs to do more of it.

Now he just needs to back it up and I hope he does.

He has to consistenlty present and work hard defensively to keep the ball in our half. If he does that, I think he will be fine. But f he doesn't - then it was only one match.

Fair enough I also had reservations about being way down in the goal square. I did however always consider him a great captain and leader. Hille had his chance and was ok without being super. Matthew Lloyd is Matthew Lloyd and that takes a lot with it as far as players listening and playing for him. I am sure if you ask Bashar about Lloyd I think he would tell you he hangs off every word. In 2 or 3 years when Lloyd has a year left might be perfect timing for Hille.

Do the words "I think Lloyd is an average captain" ring any bells?

I think Lloyd is an average captain, in the wrong position for a captain, at the wrong stage of his career.

That's far from bagging him out and is an opinion.

Now if i was to call him a useless has been diving cheat etc, as some here have done, fair enough.

I notice you have failed to address several of the issues i raised and you will also notice that he played one of his best games for the year when not at FF, which was part of what i was saying, as quoted above.

Glad to hear that if you walked up to Matthew Lloyd in the street and offered him your opinion, saying "I think you are an average captain", that it's far from bagging him out. My mistake, in fact it's nearly bordering on a compliment.
As stated earlier I said Matthew Lloyd is still a great leader regardless of form. I'm not just jumping on a day old bandwagon. For example take a close look at the amount of talking and special attention he gives your boy Jay Neagle when the ball isn't down there. It's like he has his own personal on field forward coach. That is called leadership. But in your opinion he's only a leader when he's near the ball, further up the field.

What a ridiculous thing to bring into the discussion.

You think he is a great leader, i think he is average, no point going round and round.

Fletcher teaches Ryder as does Mal, maybe they should be our captains now based on your argument.

You don't have to be the captain to show leadership.

My argument was more based around him being at FF and getting on in age.
