Lloyd Well Past Best

/sigh

He's obviously past his best, but he can still contribute. Although it's hard to make an impact when your midfield is getting flogged, and kicking it over your head every time.

At least he still worked hard.

I'm sick of this constant critcism of Lloyd, he's not going to kick 100 goals again, so don't expect it. He's still arguably the best FF in the comp.

This criticism should be aimed at the midfield.

Lloyds goals have mainly come from fast leading.

He has lost a yard (Not basing it on tonights game) and we don't have enough quality deliverers of the ball.

We don't win any where near enough of the ball to give him enough opportunities and by the time we do he will be older and a touch slower again.

He isn't the type of player that can change his game and go and stand in the square and take contested marks.

None of this means that he can't contribute, but he won't be kicking 70+ any more.
He kicked 62 goals last year with an average midfield kicking to him (JJ, Peverill ect). I don't see why he couldn't kick 70+ goals if we manage to get a good midfielder together and start giving him some good delivery, consistantly aswell doing the small things like teammates help blocking his opponent when he goes on the lead ect.

If he get's this in the future (which I think he will) and plays close to goal and given a bit more space in the forward 50 he should be able to kick those 70+ goals a year.

Last year he had a midfield that could win a clearance and a team that won 10 games.

This year he has a midfield minus Hird and an older JJ and Pev and young inexperienced players learning a new gameplan with injuries galore and Lucas out for half the year and next year he will be another year older.

Lloyd stated he would probably not be back to top form before rounds 6-8 prior to the season. It does not help that we cannont kick it to the right spots either. He will get better. Plus, he does not have the luxury of Lucas as a second focal point. Lloyd needs Lucas to be at his best.

You won't see Lloydy kick 70+ goals again.

Merv, I'm reading a bit of a smirk into this! Surely you're just provoking for a bite.

Quite interesting in the pre-match bit for Ch 7 last night looking at how many goals the great FFs kicked after their 30th birthday. The call is that he's got another 300+ at least! But only if;
1) He gets decent support to stop being the focus for 2 defenders every night. The return of Lucas will ensure this
2) He stays fit, and
3) His skills don't get wasted like Richo's by not having decent delivery.

I would admit though that he should never set foot across the 50m line again. It was good enough for Lockett in his twilight to set up camp in the goal square, and maybe the days of looking for team disposals are over for him.

It would be sad to see him go down hill like Nietz, Gehrig though. Even if he becomes a 50 - 60 goal a year forward, we could accept that as long as others step up.

I think he will be massive for us next week, was beaten last night, but beware, big game, big stage for a captain to stand and deliver-watch out pies:thumbsu:

Not at all Doc.

During a thread in the pre season, the question was how many will Lloyd kick, i chose 50, going from memory.

I'm not attacking him but he won't kick 70+ goals again imo.

I am more worried about Fletch to be honest. His inability to play any role but the role of spare man is extremely worrying. We have 3 key talls in the back half and 1 at the front. Logically it should be 2 and 2 but the best candidate to throw forward is also the only player who can consistantly beat his man (Ryder).

If he did continue his form slump through the entire season, would you want him taking the place of a potential young gun next year? and yes i realise he says he is not 100% fit. But judd still has a massive impact on all his games and hes also not 100% fit.

The reason i ask, is i hated seeing benny dixon leave the hawks cause he'd given his all to the club and you feel the club owes him something in return. But not at the expense of winning games.

I reckon lastnight essendon would have been able to play an up-and-comer on their list who would have had more of an impact on the game and definately played with more tenacity.

I blame Hawthorn for this situation. If you had just played nice, and let Buddy Franklin come to Essendon when Sheeds wanted him a few years ago, this would not be an issue! lol :p

ok 3 things.

1. If Lloyd wasn't fit why was he playing? Knighter said at the start of the year anyone who isn't 100% fit will not be playing.

2. This shows that Knighter has absolutely no faith whats-so-ever in Courtney Johns.

3. The delivery into Lloyd last night was F______ terrible. High balls that was Hudgthon's bread and butter.

Even when the delivery was ok he was badly beaten. What I love about him is he keeps his chin up and persists without any sign of defeat. He has truely been a great champion! I think he will be a great leader from now on, but not our match winner like in the past.

As for the comments re only the first few games, this trend has been apparent for a few years now, ever since he avulsed his hamstring tendon off the bone. This injury was a lot more serious than most realise.

Tough crowd here. Who would the knockers play at FF if Lloyd wasn't going to play?

Johns? We know how much faith Knights must have in him. No wait, Neagle.

Of course is well past his best, no one could deny that. No player can sustain the career he had at the level he played for 13-15 years.

Add Lucas to the forward line and there's more than one option, Lloyd can still contribute if not just for his leadership.

Delivery is another problem.

Yeah, he got chopped around the ear-hole. Hudgton was all over his shoulders at nearly every contest, not one free kick to Lloyd... hence Lloyd's frustration and the little back-hander/forearm.

Lloyd has to work bloody hard for his goals these days, he doesnt time his leads like he used to. He was never explosive so that just compounds the problem.

I'd have neagle playing out of the square while letting lloyd have his head further up the ground where he can use his decent wind tank to advantage.
