like we all just can't wait to see the president of collingwood call games or wait for it the president of north Mlebourne get in on the act...If it sounds ridiculous it's because it is:eek:

Forget the personalities pal ... Channel 9`s coverage of football was far superior to anything else that is dished up today.

... and even the remotest possibility of seeing Quartermain and Walls banished from the screens gives me a stiffy you could smash a coke bottle on ... god i hate those two

I would be happy if Foxtel had the rights to every game.I don't care who commentates.
Foxtel means LIVE footy. That's all I care about.

I'd rather see 9 do the footy then the current Budget we try harder and that Hertz amatuer hour networks. Just no Eddie for Collingwood games and no Brayshaw for..well anything really...

Ch 9 play adds at every possible opportunity, for those that can't get to live games and enjoy watching it on the box the lack of continuity in the game is beyond frustrating.

Personally I would take Walls and Quarters over Eddie and Garry Lyon.

Yes. Time to scrap the anti-syphoning laws. If people want to watch sport badly enough, they'll pay the relatively minimal fee.

Besides, this country's not the personal fiefdom of the owners of television networks and it's not the governments job to protect their interests at the expense of a truly competative free market.

i basically have foxtel to watch the odd OS test series .. meh to the rest . If footy was more available via this median then it would be just a bonus .

Spot on

Eddie isnt bias at all especially when you compare him to "i cant work with ed go blues" Lane and "I want Judd inside of me" Walls

spot on ch 9 was so superior in terms of footy, and if the idiots in canberra at least relax the anti siphoning laws so they can show bs on normal channels and live footy on the digital channels since they are forcing everyone to switch to digital anyway.

funny how the memories fade with time... I clearly remember Ch 9 NOT showing the footy live because of Burke's Baackyard! As if that scenario won't present itself again if Ch 9 get the rights.Ch 9 left footy for dead in the 80's and suddly remembered they missed it so badly 20 years later!

In terms of better commentary...they had Dennis Commetti (now at 7) and Ed (who called Friday nights (mainly the filth games). I remember Ch 9them showing ad after ad.

It all boils down to which commentators the television stations employ. I can't stand commentators with massive egos and biased attitudes - particularly this lot...Quarter-brain, Walls, Lane, Lloyd, Eddy, James Brayshaw, Brownless et al. At least Ch 7's calling is un-biased and provides fairly intelligent special comments (even though they need to lift their effort regarding friday nights time slots).

Bring back footy on the ABC!
Better yet...go to the footy instead!

Channel 9 is a Richmond organisation.

Yes,it's good to be the king!

SEN is too hehe.

Funny the media that work there bag us but make the money that feeds em and buys them houses in RICHMOND!

Eddie knew-that's why he moved Collingwood's Headquarters to RICHMOND!!

7 and 9 would work for me.

walls, blight, darcy. off the air. that'd be great. the only endearing thing about 10 is before the game, but they could survive without the actual game being on their network i think, a la the footy show for all those years.

plus is it 7 or 10 that crosses to jon ralph? i can do without that sh*t too

Dwayne Russell should be barred from the commentary box.

"Hey security,if Dwayne gets within 10 yards of the commentary box, shoot him":D

Now that would make a great comedy album.

Taking off afl commentators lol.

Except knowing the world we live in today,it would probably bag Richmond.

It's just a shame Billy Birmingham's a rugby league man Smasha.

Nine does a better job overall but all the commercial stations love to cram in the ads. Live footy might very well be a condition of the next broadcast rights deal - let's hope.

Ideally, Dennis Commetti would call every match. There's a photo of him in the dictionary under 'doyen'. Top bloke too. :thumbsu:

The rest of the callers are crap. Back in the day on 3LO, Tim Lane used to be excellent but TV, age and his Blue blood seem to have got the better of him.

No, footy is the people's game, and we shouldn't pay to see it. Personally, i like channel 10 but hate how channel 7 due their coverage. Would still be happy with 4 games free to air and the rest to pay, i have no issue with that. As far as other sport coverage on free to air, all channels have gone down hill. Tennis, non existant, Cricket, boring, Basketball not anymore, Soccer, nothing domestic, league - don't get me started on how channel 9 have killed that sport in vic. It's not what it used to be. Screw it, bring back Tim Lane and Drew Morphett back to the ABC coverage on TV.

:thumbsu:SADLY, if Nine were to snare the footy rights, there would be little difference.
Such is the way networks work, the likes of Robert Walls and all your other favourites, would migrate to Nine. Pure and simple.
Walls is sadly out of touch with the modern game and viewers, but some d**k upstairs in management will be sold on his playing and coaching career and the fact he is somehow deemed an 'expert'.
How many Seven guys landed at Nine and Ten when Seven lost the rights???
There's only so few commentators.
Remember back to Richards and Landy at Seven ... those guys were together an eternity and were on the nose long before they were finally culled!
AND yes, I remember the footy starting late because of Burke's Backyard!!! sadly, for whatever pitiful reason, there are people - and lots of them - who don't give a f*** about football and would gladly watch Burkey night and day!!! What sad lives they lead - but they are plentiful!!!

What I think would help is if the FTA stations were allowed to use their digital channels the way they wanted rather than being restricted to shows that have already been seen elsewhere.

At the moment foxtel is in the box seat due to Kerry Packer forcing seven to pay above the going rate last time for the footy, then they needed a third partner to enable them to show all the games, so foxtel got a sweetheart deal for the matches the televise, leaving the FTA stations to pay the rest. Hence ridiculous ads and Better Homes and Gardens. If TEN , Seven or Nine can use their own broadcasting equipment to get more shows into more TV's then they don't need Foxtel, so FOXTEL will have to pay more for matches.

Personally I would prefer for Digital TV to have it more than foxtel, (even though I have foxtel) it costs me extra for the sports package , when the only time I use it is to watch the tigers when they aren't on FTA. Lost interest in other sports years ago, (with a passing interest in the Cricket scores) .

As to commentators I wouldn't miss, BT, Walls, Healy, Loyd, Lane, Morfit , Dermie the list goes on. I think only Bruce and Eddie (when not commentating on Pies) and maybe Commeti

The rest of the callers are crap.
I don't mind Pickering RatD, I rate him a clear second with a lot of daylight third...real shame he's always lumped in with those two ignorant clowns Dunstall and BT. Funnily enough, I can handle Frawley too...more because he's not quite as painful as the rest than him actually being good at it. Good on him for not spending too long potting Wallace, got over it pretty quickly to his credit.

Matthews is bearable, but it's amusing how these 'legendary' coaches don't come off even a quarter as football smart as they're assumed to be when you're privy to their thought processes...Blight being clearly the best example. Some of the mind blowingly ignorant dross they come out with just proves beyond all doubt that there's hundreds of people who could coach better than them, but don't get the chance because they weren't star footballers.

Definitely second the motion that Fox should have all games...I've only had to watch one on commercial TV this year (because I'm in QLD with very little commercial TV coverage I usually get the perfect situation [which everyone should have] of the commercial TV game being telecast on Main Event - channel 518 - and the Fox designated game on Fox 1 running simultaneously) which was the Dreamtime game. When Essendon were kicking a goal a minute early on it was the worst imaginable coverage...goal to Essendon...two way louder than the footy ads for some shitbox business in Alice Springs which is nowhere near where we live...goal to Essendon...two more ads...AAAAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHH...nearly lost it. :D

So if you want to go to a game do they let you in for free? Does your TV run on free electricity?

Televised sport is not an entitlement or a right....you won't see amnesty international lobbying the UN about it. It's quite ironic that the right wing media barons are feeding the general public a bunch of socialist "it's your entitlement" drivel to protect their own interests.

People splash their cash on all kinds of crap, as I said, if they want to watch sport badly enough they'll gladly fork out what really isn't that much a week
Why shouldn't Foxtel be allowed to compete on a level footing in the marketplace, you either want a free market economy or you don't. Television networks are soulless corporate entities , they don't need or deserve a psuedo heritage listing.

...because the AFL understand that if Joe Public is forced to pay to watch AFL because Foxtel has 100% rights, they will invariably lose a stack of followers (out of sight...out of mind). ...oh and Foxtel will gladly hike the price of subscription knowing full well they have a monoploy on televising AFL.

...besides, we indirectly pay to watch AFL on Ten & 7 via the incessant ads they show...

...that's why I choose to go to the game
