Even though I would prefer that it remains on FTA stations, yep I can agree with Foxtel putting in a bid. But then you would see ads on Foxtel as well , currently their portion is somewhere in vicinity of 50 million per year fro four games a week. So to get it by themselves next year at that rate it would 100 mill a year. Not going to happen unless they get an increase in buy in by the general public. Currently at 33% of homes have Foxtel , off which I would estimate possibly only 50% have Fox Sports.

Foxtel needs a massive buy in to get the rights by themselves even if people are forced to. So that means ......advertising to pay for it.

So if you want to go to a game do they let you in for free? Does your TV run on free electricity?

Televised sport is not an entitlement or a right....you won't see amnesty international lobbying the UN about it. It's quite ironic that the right wing media barons are feeding the general public a bunch of socialist "it's your entitlement" drivel to protect their own interests.

People splash their cash on all kinds of crap, as I said, if they want to watch sport badly enough they'll gladly fork out what really isn't that much a week
Why shouldn't Foxtel be allowed to compete on a level footing in the marketplace, you either want a free market economy or you don't. Television networks are soulless corporate entities , they don't need or deserve a psuedo heritage listing.
Don't get me wrong, i don't have a Marx or Stalin poster on the wall, but, not everyone is in the position to afford the "luxury" of subscription tv. I'm not saying your ignorant, but in the bigger picture, Khan is right, they would lose a massive audience for one (there is a fair bit of instability in the economy as you would know), and the only way pay could afford the bid is to put ads in. So the a reworking of the current arrangement is the way to go. You get to watch a shitload of Tiger games as we are crap, and people like me, listen to us on the radio, and watch whatever else is offered on FTA tv.

What I think would help is if the FTA stations were allowed to use their digital channels the way they wanted rather than being restricted to shows that have already been seen elsewhere.
That's what should happen. I don't understand why governments give FTA stations so many free kicks then hamstring them like this.

I don't mind Pickering ... I can handle Frawley too...
Matthews is bearable...

I usually get the perfect situation [which everyone should have] of the commercial TV game being telecast on Main Event - channel 518 - and the Fox designated game on Fox 1 running simultaneously)
Yeah Pickering is pretty good.As far as special comments go I like Matthews and surprisingly I like Lloyd. He might have a boring voice but he brooks no favours (then again I haven't heard him on an Essendon game). Frawley, well he was a spud of a coach but I think he is a pretty ripping bloke. Comes from a great family.

I had the 518 thing too when I was living in foreign climes. It's definitely a winner. The only problem is if you're at the pub and every damn TV is tuned to the league. Good luck trying to get them to change one.

Televised sport is not an entitlement or a right
It is because Johnny Howard said it is. (Good to see the Sri Lankans opposing him as the head of the ICC - apparently he was trying to interfere with their touring schedule, something about "we will decide who comes here and the circumstances under which they come"?):p

Or you go to the game, or at worst, the pub.
Yeah i'm a member, i get to about 4-7 games a year (getting hard now with my kids sports over both days of the week end and anywhere from 1 and a half hours to 2 hours drive), and as for the pub, may have mentioned that after work i wouldn't mind watching the game at a pub to my better half, and recieved one of those icy cold stares with the reply "yes honey i think that's a great idea", needless to say, i'll be listening intently!!!

Are you forgetting Channel 9 have the rugby so in Qld and NSW they wont be bumping those games for AFL. But as Khan said they could put AFL on the GO channel 88 if the laws are changed to permit this (which I believe they will be)

Forget the personalities pal ... Channel 9`s coverage of football was far superior to anything else that is dished up today.
And we had Fox Footy Channel.

Seven has been abysmal. Hundreds of millions of dollars outlay only to delay football left and right for Better Homes and Gardens and the V8s. :thumbsu:

Does anyone hear remember the same augument with Burkes Backyard and Nine. They are no different in that way. All the FTA networks will need to be invloved next time or just watch the ad content.

well I gotta say I'm suprised what people are prepared to tolerate...i find the whole concept of a club president commentating a football match quite distasteful, almost an insult TBH that we should be on the end of it...pffftttt the collingwood pres commentating the footy:rolleyes:..i mean what next, Korean President Kim Jong chairing a nuclear disarmament summit:eek:
