If anyone wants to see an awesome, yet largely unknown footy facility on the GC, go and have a look at the Ormeo Bulldogs home ground! Two of the best fields you will see and with some infrastructure would rival Burpengary as a venue.

At present the club only goes up to u12s, but that will change yearly. The club itself is well run (wouldn't have been able to get such good facilities made if not for good people at the club) and has great apparel, which many clubs let themselves down on.

If anyone who is interested in this sort of thing, Ormeo footy ground is worth a look. The far field is an absolute special. Great views, bush, trees with shade.

Where is the Ormeau bulldogs? I live in Ormeau now and I do want to get involved in the over 30s comp.

The ground at Ormeau has literally been carved out of a cow paddock , they have done a bit of work there over the years.

The Southport Sharks successfully applied to the GC Council to build coaches boxes at their premises last week. Not sure if this means an upgrade to the current boxes or the addition of new boxes on their second oval.

Iason would be massively happy to learn that Bond University are now leading the QAFA (A) competition after being promoted from the QAFA (B) last year when they claimed their first premiership. It's a great effort from the Bullsharks, especially considering 9 of the 11 clubs in that league aren't based on the Gold Coast. The other Gold Coast side in that league is Carrara and they currently sit 4th on the ladder.

As for the other GC teams; Burleigh is leading the QFA (South) competition, Robina 5th, Coomera 8th and Coolangatta-Tweed 9th (last). In the QAFL you have Labrador leading the competition, Palm-Beach Currumbin sitting 5th, Surfers Paradise 6th and Broadbeach 8th. Southport are sitting 8th in the NEAFL. So there could be a few premierships coming the Gold Coast's way this year.

As if people needed more reasons to hate Bond.

Nice job Sharks!

State of the art sports club in Benowa
A multimillion-dollar rejuvenation has been proposed for the sporting precinct located at Benowa's Sir Bruce Small ovals.

The proposal will significantly improve current facilities without impacting on existing sporting fields.

The large tract of land is already home to several sports clubs, however the proposal will amalgamate the sports within a two-level, state-of-the-art sports club of up to 9000sq m.

The plan also includes two residential towers between 12 to 14 storeys with up to 200 apartments, medical and commercial suites and an underground carpark for up to 500 vehicles.

However the jewel in the crown is the sports "club-house" - the Benowa Sports Club - which will include bars, restaurants, gaming areas, a kids club, conference and function facilities, administrative offices for various sports, a 3000sq m gymnasium, swimming pool and hi-tech training facilities.

The project is the brainchild of long-time respected Gold Coast businessman Bruce Grady, who says the application process is about to start with state and local governments and he is hopeful of a complete date before the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

...

The area is home to the Benowa Bowls Club and the Surfers Paradise Aussie rules, cricket and baseball clubs.

Mr Grady said several other sports clubs were also "very interested" in being a part of the development.

Surfers Paradise Demons AFL club president John Rankin said the development "is a god-send" to those sports involved.

"There will be an overarching board that will control the club and each of the sports clubs will have a representative on that board," he said.

"Money will flow from the Benowa Sports Club back to these grassroots clubs. It is a concept that we have sen work very well elsewhere. But initially you need someone with some serious dollars who can make it happen.

"Financially we have struggled for many years. This takes us out of the chook raffle brigade and gives the players and supporters of all sports involved one of the best sporting facilities in the country."

Great news for the Surfers Paradise Demons. Their facilities at Sir Bruce Small Park are pretty dated and probably well behind other QAFL teams. It also strengthens their case for a spot in the top Queensland league when the NEAFL eventually disbands. They have a long history of producing talented juniors so it's a great outcome for footy on the Coast. It sounds like there may also be plans to host a team or two for the Commonwealth Games. A bowls team would be my guess considering they already have bowls facilities. An inner city footy club with first class facilities is a very good thing for the game on the GC. It's virtually the same distance (about 5kms) from the CBD as the Southport Sharks. The Labrador Tigers also happen to be about 5kms from the CBD if anyone is interested. All three clubs are in different directions (Labrador - north, Southport - west, Surfers - south).

Update on ladder positions:

NEAFL
7th - Suns reserves
9th - Southport

QAFL

1st - Labrador
5th - PBC
6th - Broadbeach
7th - Surfers Paradise

QFA (South)
5th - Burleigh
6th - Robina
7th - Coomera
9th - Coolangatta-Tweed

QAFA (A)
2nd - Bond University
4th - Carrara

Any idea where that massive building would go Matchu?
I played cricket and footy at Surfers and the baseball cricket and football fields cover most of the land. maybe they plan to demolish the bowls club and old football clubrooms?

Not sure mate but I reckon you might be on to something when saying the bowls club may make way. As a former player, you would know the facilities are quite dated and it sounds like all the sports clubs will share this one big club. I can only assume they'll want to build the club as close to Ashmore Rd as possible so they can increase the amount of potential customers.

The Labrador Tigers have officially qualified for the QAFL grand final with a 55-point victory over Wilston Grange at Cooke-Murphy Oval. I'm not sure if this means they'll host the grand final in two weeks or if every grand final is held in Brisbane regardless of who qualifies. Ex Sun Josh Fraser chimed in for three goals and Matthew Lappin also played. Looks like the Tigers could be headed for a sixth flag in their history!

Burleigh lost their QFA prelim to Coorparoo by 4 points and Bond Uni will play the South East SUNS in the QAFA grand final next week. SUNS will be happy about that.
