So Southport just don't play?
Seems that way. The QAFL released their updated seniors draw midway through this week and it doesn't include Southport so that won't change. I think the Sharks will just have to sit out this season and return to the QAFL in 2021.

Jen2310 just found out former North Melbourne and Fremantle player Jess Sinclair is the current senior coach of Palm Beach Currumbin and former Geelong/GWS player Josh Hunt signed on to play for PBC this year. We were talking about former AFL players in the QAFL the other week and it's always interesting to see which retired AFL players make the move each year.

With the Queensland bid for the Grand Final successful, we will see an improvement and increase in facilities for AFL right across Queensland including te Gold Coast. That is the government's promise instead of a major financial promise such as WA.

. The Queensland Government has promised a series of legacy projects which the AFL would have been challenged to acquire if not for the Grand Final.

They include better ground access for the AFL, infrastructure for women’s changerooms for an AFLW product that is going gangbusters, and more junior competitions. What is the point in taking a slightly better financial offer from WA if they just have to use the money buying what Queensland has promised.

The broadbeach v morningside final game of the season begins at 2pm.

Top of the table clash.

Gore, Reeves and Fyfe are playing

So Broady secured the minor premiership but sadly AFL Queensland confirmed yesterday that the Southport ground will be unavailable to host the QAFL Grand Final this year which means the minor premiership doesn't mean much now that the GF will be held in Brisbane (Yeronga) regardless of who qualifies. Prior to yesterday, AFL Queensland had a rule in place that stated the highest finishing team that qualifies for the GF would host the game in their home city.

Oh well. We've claimed five QAFL premierships in a row as a city and most of those were won in Brisbane so hopefully that continues this year. Broadbeach are the only Gold Coast team in the QAFL that have not claimed a flag in the last five years so hopefully it's the Cats' year in 2020! Any word on whether Alex Davies will rejoin Broady during the finals series?

Worth mentioning that PBC have finished third so they are obviously a chance to win the QAFL flag as well.

I read that. That's unfortunate, but I've watched most of Broady's games this season and I feel they are superior than anyone else. Very good chance they can get a flag this year.

Looks like PBC are ahead in their QAFL elimination final against Mt Gravatt today. If they hold on here then they'll face Morningside in the prelim next week and Broadbeach will face the winner of today's Sherwood v Maroochydore EF. Maroochydore are currently ahead.

It'd be very unique to go into next week's QAFL preliminary final weekend with two Gold Coast teams, one Brisbane team and a Sunshine Coast team. I doubt that's ever happened in the past. Hopefully the two GC teams get up and we can see a fifth consecutive all-Gold Coast QAFL final.

That's a good mix though, Good for SEQ footy to have all 3 main regions in the hunt.

Unfortunately, Maroochydore lost. Palm Beach and Broadbeach are in next week's preliminary finals though. I think Broady are going to win this year. They are the last current Gold Coast team to have not claimed a QAFL premiership. In fact, I think Broadbeach have only ever claimed two senior premierships in their entire club history so I'm pulling for the Cats for this year. Hopefully Alex Davies gets to play in some of these finals with Broady.

Broadbeach semi final is meant to be now, but its not showing me any stats here..

Eta: Nevermind its working now lol Cats up by 2 goals.

2021 local junior grand finals were played at Southport last weekend. Here are the results:

U17 Div 1: Broadbeach 4.3 (27) def. Wests Juniors 3.7 (25)

U16 Div 1: Palm Beach Currumbin 4.12 (36) lost to Mount Gravatt 7.12 (52)
U16 Div 2: Southport 10.9 (69) def. Carrara 3.3 (21)

U15 Div 1: Burleigh 6.12 (48) def. Victoria Point 0.2 (2)
U15 Div 2: Surfers Paradise 5.10 (40) def. Pac Pines/Ormeau/Coomera 6.2 (38)

U14 Div 1: Broadbeach 6.7 (43) def. Burleigh 4.10 (34)
U14 Div 2: Pac Pines 9.8 (62) def. Surfers paradise 7.3 (45)
U14 Div 3: Burleigh 3.5 (23) def. Surfers Paradise 2.9 (21)

U13 Div 1: Southport 9.15 (69) def. Burleigh 7.2 (44)
U13 Div 2: Surfers Paradise 6.7 (43) def. Carrara 3.4 (22)
U13 Div 3: Ormeau 7.11 (53) def. Coomera 5.1 (31)

U12 Div 1: Southport 4.5 (29) def. Palm Beach Currumbin 2.1 (13)
U12 Div 2 : Labrador 5.12 (42) def. Burleigh 2.3 (15)

Almost a complete clean sweep for all Gold Coast teams in junior GFs except PBC lost to Mount Gravatt in the U16s Div 1. Surfers Paradise and Burleigh seem to have the most junior depth these days as they made multiple GFs in several age divisions. The QAFL finals have also started and here are the results:

QAFL Seniors
Semi Final:
Broadbeach 9.17 (71) def. Labrador 9.13 (67)
Note: Broadbeach are through to the next week's grand final. Labrador will play Maroochydore tomorrow for a spot in the grand final.

QAFL Reserves
Prelim Final:
Labrador v Palm Beach Currumbin
Note: Prelim winner gets to play Morningside in the grand final next week.

QAFL Colts
Semi Final 1:
Labrador 8.6 (54) def. Morningside 4.5 (29)
Semi Final 2: Broadbeach 8.12 (60) def. Maroochydore 3.12 (30)
Prelim Final: Broadbeach v Morningside
Note: Prelim winner gets to play Labrador in the grand final next week.

Labrador are potentially on for the QAFL triple in the seniors, reserves and colts this year. It would be Labrador's fifth QAFL seniors grand final in eight years if they happen to beat Maroochydore tomorrow and obviously a special one for Suns fans given Nick Malceski is coaching the team & Pearce Hanley is playing for them.

Broadbeach just defeated Maroochydore in the QAFL Grand Final by 38 points. First time Broady have won a QAFL flag. It means all four Gold Coast-based teams have won at least one QAFL premiership in the last six years.

Not sure how they managed to pull it off but after signing Andrew Boston from Southport, I just read Labrador have also just signed Lachie Henderson from Geelong and Zac Smith for the 2022 QAFL season. Presumably they still have Pearce Hanley as a player and Nick Malceski as the head coach so Labrador are really splashing the cash at the moment. The latest rumour is Broadbeach have also pulled off a massive signing as well but I'm not sure who it is yet (Townsend?). The QAFL is certainly stepping it up in terms of the quality of players running around in the league!

It seems like recently retired AFL players are finally starting to realise they can come up here after their AFL career ends and play some local footy while enjoying our amazing Gold Coast lifestyle. The players being forced to live here last season probably has a big influence on this recent realisation and I'd expect more to sign with local teams over the next few years. Apparently Casboult planned on doing the same thing until we started speaking to him and convinced him to make a return to the AFL ranks.

Interesting that Lachie Henderson actually started his career with Brisbane but was traded early on the finalise the Fevola trade. Perhaps he never actually wanted to leave Queensland and always intended to come back here once his AFL career ended?

Huge signing! Arguably the biggest signing in QAFL history. He's only 30 years old and finished 6th in Carlton's B&F count just a few months ago.

Always nice to see more high level footballers moving to the Gold Coast. Local GC football is the real winner here, ladies and gentlemen. It's probably worth mentioning that Jones did not reach 100 AFL games for the Bulldogs or the Blues, which would mean we wouldn't have an issue of having to compete for any of his future children should they choose to pursue a career in football.

Hopefully Jones is just one of many high level ex AFL players who move here and get involved in local footy.
