So tell us .... what are the biggest grudge matches in yours or any other regional/local leagues ?

To kick off ....

These days its probably Southport v Northern Eagles in the AFLQ, but the worst had to be the Coorparoo v Morningside or Sandgate v Windsor/Zillmere games of the good old days in the 60's and 70s.

In the 2nd division up here, I don't know (and this is from experience!) if the Alexandra Hills Bombers (nee Capalaba) and the Moorooka Roosters have EVER played a game in their short histories that didn't degenerate into a bloodbath.

I remember one game we played at Moorooka where 8 players were sent off (4 them and 4 us: you can do that up here!), 2 others went to hospital in separate ambulances (one a broken jaw and the other a broken leg), and the final score, in fine weather mind you, was us 3-9-27 to them 2-5-17. One of our blokes that got sent proceeded to jump the fence into the licenced area at the front of the clubhouse, and continue blueing with a number of reserve-graders. There wasn't much footy played that day, and a pretty woeful day for the code locally I might add.

The other "baddie" that happened to me was when the umpires walked off our Coorparoo v Morningside U/17 match when it degenerated into a free-for-all involving players and spectators. The QAFL even launched an investigation into it from memory, it was that bad. At the time, you feel 10 foot tall and bullet-proof in front of your mates and girlfriends, but I look back now and think it was a pretty ordinary thing to happen, especially for U/17s. (I remember it like it was yesterday)

The only "outside" one I kinda know of is possibly the old Port v Norwood clashes.

Anyway, that's what I reckon ........

Mud n blood ,
I'll have to get to a Bombers Roosters game sounds like fun! Live out in Cleveland so thats close . Are you Alex Hills or Moorooka?
Over in W.A it is a Freo derby between South & East always good for a fight or 2. Even today when they get 1000 people to games a Foundation Day Derby at Freo will get 10-12,000. Always love stirring those South supporters.
East Perth & West Perth are good at getting the hate up as well.

In the Lexton League (now merged with Western Plains and called Lexton Plains League), Navarre and Marnoo always carried out a rivalry. The towns are neighbours and the footy matches had a particular fire about them.

mud'n'blood, you're a QLDer apparently, I dunno if yer a Brissy Lions fan or not. If so, you know that Tim Notting bloke? Came from Navarre, he did. Came from that mob of relentless mongrels who always buried our Nooers into the turf on every outing.

(Navarre pumped us basically every time).

There are quite a number of grudge matches in teh SANFL.

The biggest would probably be Port v Norwood. 120+ years of traditonal games. They used to play every year on ANZAC day, until the sanfl changed the way they scheduled. Many a big clash, many grand finals, many bloodbaths. Both have big histoires in SA , and our SA's too biggest and most succesful clubs. A lot of good games in recent years. The 1999 grand final was one of the greatest of all time, with port getting up only minutes from the siren.

Port v Glenelg has stemmed up in recent years. The GF's between them in the late 80s early 90s were some g reat games...port winning of course :P
Glenelg didnt help the rivalry much, especially Cornes who hypocritically said "Port have ruined SA footy, and i will never coach the crows".

Port v Sturt had a big rivalry going in the olden days.

Port v Centrals have had a few great clashes in recent years and its stemming into a big rivalry. big GF's in 95 and 96...95 which ended in an enf of game bloodbath with a couple of big reports and bigger punches thrown.
95 at footy park, Peter Green went rampant and decked Darren Smith and a few others behind play...we won by 10 goals that day the magpies did!!. the follw up game at alberton, Green decked Darryl Poole in the first 5 seconds...we won that game also!

96 was great...Centrals beat us 5 times during the year, but couldnt wint he one that mattered against us!! The game at elizabeth there was a massive brawl at half time...all in brawl, could of got ugly with mini leaguers running ontot he ground!

North v Glenelg had some great clashes in teh past as well!

In the Tallangatta League there is a blood feud between Mitta United (the Mountain Men) and Kiewa-Sandy Creek (the Hawks).

A typical Mitta line-up has 7-8 players named Hodgekins, while there are usually 5 Barber brothers playing for KSC (seniors and reserves) as well as 3 or 4 other sets of brothers.

Most of the players at Mitta are related to those from Kiewa-Sandy Creek as well - and there is more than a little of the McCoys and the Hatfields about their footy matches.

All in brawls have been common, as have Grand Finals.

BTW - In SA ... you've forgotten the Glenelg v Norwood rivalry.
