Why it is so hard to pick a starting 22 to include the bus full of young talent waiting to break in for 2013…

Assuming all fit & available, these are my absolute locks for this early part of the year.

I have just finished watching the replay of Rd2 last year (v Hawks) and THunt just sells himself every time I see him.

The only locks I haven’t really nailed in my own mind are THunt, Bundy & Rivers.

So these are my locks. Just leaves the bench.

Bring it on.

thunt LONNERGAN rivers

ENRIGHT TAYLOR MACKIE

KELLY BARTEL VARCOE

DUNCAN PODS JOHNSON

Bundy HAWKINS CHAPMAN

WEST COREY SELWOOD

Am I the only one confused ?

They're the only only players the MC don't really have to think about. Or perhaps a better way of looking at it is they are the only players who could play 3 or 4 bad weeks and not have their spot questioned. Although I reckon plenty on this board would question T. Hunt if he played that many bad games in a row.

None of the youngsters NOT in the above list could survive 3 or 4 bad weeks in a row, and I don't think Corey or Chapman could either. Nor Rivers.

You say "He sells himself everytime I see him" yet you don't have him as a lock
Smedts, Murdoch, Blicavs...plenty more. They also impress me everytime. No locks there. Just because I am a fan of one of the group does not translate to a lock. Give me a break

There are still plenty of THunt deniers on this board.

By the way, I am typing this very, very slowly so as to not further 'confuse' you. Hope it also helps dazbroncos & VEEDUBS.

I normally respect the opinions of long term 5,000+ posters, even those with 40,000+

I am but a 100+ poster. I think I will leave it at that. Not sure I need to be insulted just for expressing an opinion. Maybe you are smarter than me....hard to tell from here

Woah woah woah !!!
I wasn't bagging you. It's just that you sounded as though you were praising T Hunt but you then listed him as one that isn't a lock.I thought you might've mean't J Hunt isn't a lock, along with Rivers & Bundy

I was a bit confused with that too KH

Taylor Hunt is clearly a lock. He was in our best 22 all of last season and he has smashed it throughout the preseason. Barring a mishap at training in the next fortnight, you can put the house on him being there on the field, come Easter Monday. In fact...I'd have him as a surer lock than Christensen right now.

Is the concept still current? Lock when... for a finals game? I honestly think very few players who will not be rotated , rested , call it what you will. We have around 30+ players who I feel could make claim to be ready to play a role. But if every player was fit , and in form , and we are playing a final next week.. I suspect Hmac will be in the best 22.

I think Murdoch,Caddy,GeorgeHS are highly likely to play 15 plus games. "Lock" not sure... but time and fresh talent catches the main stays. By seasons end there will be another name or two I'm sure pressing their claims.
For eg.
Brown is a little stiff , bar us recruiting Rivers he would be play R1 for sure. By seasons end who knows . If he can stay fit and others drop form or fall over he could be centre stage and the important stage of the year. its about having a chance at the right time , doing it in a big game. The making of Lonergan was surely the job he has don on Franklin and Cloke.
Kerten , my initial reservations when we drafted him were based on numerous example of undersized FF's not being able to cope with the next level. From what I've seen of this kid he is strong, mobile and talented. In another era we would playing and getting games into him. But with the talent we have , it super tough to break into our forwardline. Can he develop a tank and contribute further up the ground. Make him far more pickable.
Stringer , sort of the forgotten man. Not in many 22's that I have seen yet could easily play do a role and perhaps secure a spot if he got the chance. If the forwardline's tough to get into our midfield is just as tough especially at the start of the year. I suspect by mid season he will find spots open up. He simply must build a stack of performance in the V's to put him from and centre.

Sure, players will be rotated, but there's a difference between being given a phantom one-week injury to freshen up; and being dropped to the VFL. For the purposes of this thread, I would suggest a 'lock' is someone who will not play in the reserves, unless they are coming back from an extended injury lay-off.

So not so much Locks but "Lock outs" for the VFL. OK from that pov

THunt , Lonergan , Rivers

Enright Taylor Mackie

Kelly Duncan Varcoe

Chapman Pods SJ

Christensen Hawkins West

HMac Bartel Selwood

Menzel , JCorey , * , *

Unless something changes cant see any of the above playing much VFL if fit and in form. Obviously with Menzel Im assuming him back to his 2011 form. Some players might fall out of being locks if certain players hit their straps. West-Vardy for eg.

You need to look up the dictionary meaning of locks.
