Alistair Lynch signed a 10-year deal with Brisbane when they merged with Fitzroy, from memory. Not personally a fan of large contracts. Doesn't seem beneficial to either party really, unless there's plenty of clauses for performance for either a player to get more money, or a club to release and under-performing individual.

i remember when Fremantle offered two first round picks for McCarthy and a very decent contract lol. eventually we got him for peanuts but McDonald has shown about as much as McCarthy did and he gets a 10 year contract offer is madness.

2024 actually sounds like the perfect length to extend - Swans are an outside chance at the flag this year (unlike WCE), and presumably will have a very good shot at it by 2024. Even if he does plan to head west eventually, he might as well wait out the rebuild, play with a competitive team in the meantime, then jump to another team on the rise.

2 years is about when Fremantle will be challenging (hopefully!) but WCE are staring down the barrel of a 5 year rebuild.

2 years makes sense. Gives him 4 years into the system and can command a bigger contract if his output begins to match his potenital

Still reckon he'd sign on again after that

Also can learn from Franklin for next year at least, my gut says Buddy plays on next season at least.

They've never spent longer than 3 years out of finals in the history of the club. They have some fairly promising young/middle age talls, and midfielders start performing fairly quickly, so I'd expect they'll hit the draft hard over the next few years then be back in finals by 2025 (assuming this year is the start of the rebuild).

Even if they hit the draft hard this year those guys will only be 21 by 2025.

2 years is okay for Sydney for now. Enough time to get him to want to stay in Sydney for another 5 years on top of that

Reckon it's great news for the Swans.

Needs to be said it is getting rarer and rarer for top 5/10 draft picks to leave their clubs after their initial contract (2 years) is up and I think that's great for footy.

McDonald had very good WAFL form pre-draft and is a bigger body. He projects as a genuine no 1 KPF at AFL level, which Cam McCarthy never really did.

Yeah I think most now wait till the 4 year mark to move or they wait till 8 year mark at free agency
