Downgrade for me, looks like an amateur football team logo. The idea of the logo isn't bad, its just the style that they have done the lion in doesn't say 'european car maker' to me at all.
I believe that the new logo is actually an updated version of one of their old logos, so it may not be great but it does have some history behind it.
edit: yep their 1960-64 logo

I always felt like the eftpos logo being boring was fine, and the shape was meant to be a card. I get what you mean about the edge styling
