According to Justin Kremmer who writes for FootyHeads.com.au, a great website for footy news, Tom Lonergan's future is yet to be decided. It is unlikely he will be traded or delisted because of his star performance in the VFL Grand Final and because of what he's been through, but whether the Cats will upgrade him to the Senior List or keep him as a Rookie for another year or so is uncertain. Should the Cats upgrade him or is it unrealistic that he will play a senior match next year?

Nominated rookie perhaps? It would be an injustice for Lonners not to get another crack at the big time.

Re: Lonergan's future at the Cats undecided

Justin K is talking rubbish - Lonergan is not eligible to be rookie listed next year. Anyway Tudor said at the weekend that they were hopeful of retaining (upgrading) him but it hadn't been dcided upon.

FWIW, he has done enough to get promoted, especially given our lack of back-up tall defenders. One spanner in the works may be that the club might be tossing up whether to promote him or whether to draft Scott Thompson. Either way I hope the club don't base their decision on sentiment.

I just called the club and they said he can remain on the rookie list for up to 3 more years.

It will be decided later in the year by the Cats. They can choose to upgrade him onto the senior list or he can stay on the Rookie list. He can be a Rookie for 2 or 3 years. The other option of course is to trade him or delist him but after that performance and after what he’s been through it’s quite likely they won’t go down that path.
You can't trade Rookie listed players can you ?

2007 Rookies.

1.Reynolds - Drafted as insurance for Johnno, been injured all year, hard call but delist.

2. Grima - 2nd yr as Rookie must promote or delist

3.Davenport - Can promote, delist or keep on rookie list.

4. Lonergan - " " " " " " " " " " "

Now for the hard part, decisions, decisions!!!
It really depends on who is delisted from senior squad.Wll be a very tense few weeks for several players.

LONERGAN PROMOTED TO SENIOR LIST

Monday, October 15th, 2007 at 1:18 pm
BY MARK OPOLION
TOM Lonergan’s courage and VFL performances following a sickening collision in an AFL game late last year have resulted in Geelong promoting him to the club’s senior list.
Lonergan lost a kidney after backing into a pack against Melbourne in Round 21 last year, but he returned to the VFL this year and was best on ground in the Cats’ VFL premiership win after contributing six majors against Coburg.
Many thought the courageous Cat, who lost litres of blood and was put in an induced coma, would never play again.
But Lonergan recovered after losing 17kg following surgery and can now work towards winning back a senior position and adding to his seven AFL games.
“It is a great story and we’re really pleased that we can offer him the opportunity to take that next step in the journey,” Geelong’s football operations manager Neil Balme told The Age
