Employment long-term unemployment

I've been out of work several times, longest stretches have been around six months. Had a mate who was on the sidelines for 12 months and a family member who was out of work for two years during the 90s recession.

It is an absolute $h!t show out there now. For one hiring there is likely to be hundreds of applications in the first 24-48 hours. Simply a game of numbers. I spoke with a recruiter about a week ago, had a job he wanted to fill urgently (though the client pulled the plug). His advice was take whatever you can as the current market is brutal.

I have been "under experienced" and "over qualified" for different roles, and even meeting ALL the requirements of the role PLUS additional relevant experience have been overlooked by recruiters - no interview. Back during the GFC days I returned to Australia I wanted to get some casual labouring work through a company I previously worked for during my uni days. I got one day of work. Even unskilled labouring and I couldn't get work.

All the #istandbydan numpties aren't impacted by currently joblessness and unemployment. If you are you suffering from Stockholm Syndrome.

Most hiring in the IT space is by government agencies, the private sector is being hammered. Very few jobs and massive rate cuts (20-40%). Networking is and always will be critical.

You need to temp and get your foot in the door that way. Hopefully first in line when an opportunity arises.
Otherwise try and freelance work for yourself. Job market is brutal. Unless you have very specific skills or a very specific personality it is a dart board

Even then TBH.

It's very possible to skill yourself out of a job, particularly if you're silly enough to specialise in some esoteric scientific field, for instance.
